How to Play Bejeweled Blitz - The Ultimate Guide

Become the Boss of Bejeweled Blitz!

Desperate for that next Star Medal? Want to rise to the top of your Friends' Ladder on Facebook? Eager to get your hands on that sweet, sweet PopCap Netbook? You need these tips!

ejeweled Blitz is a special game playable only from Facebook, Myspace, or the official Popcap site, where weekly drawings are held based on your high scores (and those of your friends!) for cool stuff like free Deluxe versions of your favorite PopCap games, Popcap Plushies, or even a special PopCap Netbook (with cool art etched into it!)

But if you want it, you have to know how to play to get the highest scores... and everything you need is right here!

How do I use Coins and Boosts?! - Good News! Coins are Free to Everyone!

The Bejeweled Boosts you can purchase with Coins in Bejeweled Blitz!

The Bejeweled Boosts you can purchase with Coins in Bejeweled Blitz!

oins are the newest way to improve your game... if you're willing to play for them!

Coins are pretty easy to earn -- you'll see them with your yellow gems. Match up these gems, and coins go into your bank. Coins are also added during the Last Hurrah, so there's no rush to collect them during the game! It's pretty easy to earn a few hundred in coins each game, too!

Coins can be used to purchase boosts, which are powerups that'll last the next three games. A quick list of your new powers:

  • The Mystery Gem gives you a random special gem from the start!
  • Detonators are like the Last Hurrah, but you can trigger them at any time in the game to clear out a swath of special gems!
  • Reshufflers give you a chance to freshen up the board if you're stuck!
  • Five More Seconds is... five more seconds! How much more do we need to say?
  • Multiplier Kickstarts give you a multiplier gem from the get-go, so your score can rocket up even faster!

Just keep playing, and you'll be able to unlock all these boosts for even higher scores!

Is the NEW Bewjewled Blitz Easier? - (Hey, I sure think it is...)

he game has indeed changed, but unless you're already a power player, you're not likely to notice a difference in your scores.

The main new differences are obvious:

  • You can now swap gems while other gems are falling elsewhere in the field, saving precious seconds.
  • Power Gems have been split into two new types of gems: Fire Gems (Which explode just like the power gems we already know and love) and Star Gems (Which destroy both the row and the column they lay in!) Star Gems are made from those odd T and L-shaped pairings that used to just give you Power Gems before.
  • Blazing Speed is a minigame-within-a minigame mode that allows you to put that Speed bonus to good use, and now EVERY pairing you make on the board explodes!
  • And finally (we mean it!), there's the Last Hurrah, which takes all those gems you used to just waste at the end of the minute, and counts all unexploded fire gems, star gems, hypercubes, and multipliers to your score -- as well as any final cascades they cause in the process!

In exchange, the speed bonus has been shot to hell; yes, you can now rack up higher speed multipliers, but thanks to the new "real-time" swapping abilities, you've got to move faster than ever to keep it alive!

Likewise, the new "Blazing Speed" mode requires you to max out the speed bonus -- something only experienced players are likely to do with any regularity!

Making (and taking advantage of) the new Star Gems requires memorizing a new pattern type, which takes time. In addition, the Star Gems take out a few more gems than mere fire gems do, but only half of them are in a useful position (because the row gems being replaced are stuck up top, where they have less effect), whereas Fire Gems are almost always effective -- and if you trigger a star gem with another star gem, you lose half of the second gem's effectiveness because they're both destroying the same column/row!

And finally, the Last Hurrah? If you're the type who made a bunch of power gems before, it'll have an effect -- but if you're not, it's useless! It only makes a difference in those rare situations where you're just a few grand away from a new medal, so don't count on it saving your bacon!

In short, yes, it's easier to get a higher maximum score now -- but your score distributions are likely to stay the same. If you're not that good a player now, it won''t make you better. If you're already a power player, expect to get a shiny new medal or two... but you'll still have to earn it!

What Does Bejeweled Blitz Look Like? - A guide to the Bejeweled Blitz Playing Field

Scroll to Continue

If you're familiar with the Bejeweled Board in general, you ought to know the drill already.

There's an 8x8 grid of seven different colors of gems (white, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple). You can swap any gem with any other gem directly next to it (up, down, left, or right - no diagonals), as long as doing so makes three gems of the same color line up, which makes them disappear.

New gems drop down from the top to replace the ones you just removed, and if these gems happen to line up with others in the process, they disappear too, causing a cascade. Cascades give you free points, and the more cascades you can chain together, the more they're worth.

If you're stuck at any time, you can click the Hint button, which will point an arrow to a gem that you should move. (You might have a little trouble seeing the arrow sometimes.)

What Makes Bejeweled Blitz Different? - How is this game different from Bejeweled 2?

  1. Each game lasts only a minute! (Well, unless you have quick enough reflexes to move a couple gems before the game starts, or you start a powerful cascade at the very end, so gems continue to fall after time runs out!)
  2. Multiplier gems drop onto the field, and when you line these up with their appropriate color, all new points you earn are multiplied! The higher the multiplier, the bigger your score can be!
  3. Speed bonuses make you think fast! Speed bonuses cap out at +1000 points for each quick match you make, but they're subject to the multiplier as well -- so earning several thousand points per match is well worth it!

New Powerup: Moonstone! - A rare and expensive powerup is in your hands!

New Moonstone Powerup available!

New Moonstone Powerup available!

How effective is the Moonstone? All the moonstone does is give you a one-game advantage with three star gems (the ones that take out a row and column). This in and of itself isn't useful... unless it's mixed in with other gems and multipliers! Stack the Moonstone with your best game modifiers and watch your score climb into the heavens!

NEW Achievements for New Goals! - Complete these to gain an edge!

chievements will give you new gem offers, coins, and XP... if you know what you're doing!

Some achievements are simple in theory, like playing a number of flawless games in a row. Other times you'll be asked to earn a specific star medal, or match a certain number (or type!) of multipliers.

The higher your game rank is, the more achievements you'll have at your disposal to finish so you can rack up those points and coins!

Each Achievement is only available for a couple days at most, so you'll need to do 'em fast!

  1. Play the Bottom of the Screen! More gems falling further down means more space for matches to occur -- and more cascades to give you free points!
  2. Look for patterns all over the board! We understand that you can only focus on one part of the screen at a time. While one side is falling, go check the other side of the screen for more potential matches to keep that speed bonus going!
  3. Just Keep Playing! Practice makes perfect, and Bejeweled is no exception!
  4. Keep the Speed Alive! Your speed bonus is worth more points than just an ordinary match -- and it's critical to getting a high score! Don't stop for anything! (and yes, don't ask for a hint unless you've already lost your bonus, or it'll just slow you down further!)
  5. Don't wait for the game to start! You can move the gems as soon as you see them, and it'll save you precious seconds if you can do so and get things going ASAP!
  6. Read on for more tips! You didn't think this little list of valuable advice was all we had to offer, did you? ;) There's special advice about multipliers, power gems, and hypercubes below!

he game provides special sounds when you do good things -- the match noise gets higher and higher in pitch as your speed bonus accumulates, as well as special noises when those all-important multiplier gems appear!

On the other hand, you may not be able to have the noise on where you are, and it can get pretty annoying towards the end when the warning siren starts...

Sound On? Sound Off!

  1. Multiplier Gems Increase your Score! When they drop down, activate them to get higher scores!
  2. The highest multiplier you can earn is x6 -- because the gems only appear at the rate of a new one every ten seconds, so you need to get your first one to appear as early as possible! You can't make them all appear at once, so pace yourself!
  3. Multiplier gems are triggered by massive cascades / explosions -- twelve gems seems to be the trigger, which means either three cascades or two exploding gems!
  4. Multiplier gems have a specific color, and need to be matched with their like gems to work (or exploded, if you have one of those nearby). If there's not enough similar gems around it to work, and you don't have an exploding gem or hypercube nearby, just ignore the gem for now.
  1. Line up 4 gems for a Power Gem! The Power Gem will stay on the board while others disappear, so if there's other similar gems nearby, you can detonate it quickly!
  2. Power Gems Explode When Matched! If other power gems are nearby, they'll explode too, causing a chain effect and bigger cascades for more points!
  3. Make corner matches for Power Gems! Have two matches of three from a single gem? That'll make a power gem too!
  4. Line up 5 Gems for a Hypercube! Hypercubes can match with any gem, so there's no need to worry about lining it up with any specific gem!
  5. Use Hypercubes to clear the board of a specific color! Need to hit a hard-to-match multiplier gem or set off a power gem that'll cause a big chain reaction? Use a hypercube!
  6. Aim for making Power Gems as much as possible! Hypercubes are nice, but they take precious time to use, whereas Power Gems detonate instantly!

Friends don't let Friends send Smack Talk! - You've used our tips to get a high score... but don't brag about it!

es, we know, you're stoked that you got that brand new high score on Bejeweled. You're enjoying your shiny new star medal and everything. Congratulations. We get it.

You don't need to send Smack Talk.

People will already see that you've posted your new Star Medal around and are now on top of them in the rankings. Sending Smack Talk is just rude, annoying, and unnecessary.

Okay, so go ahead and take a nice look at the funny-looking gems in there if you like, but don't send out trash like this, unless you're trying to get rid of all your friends who are, y'know, helping you win nice prizes.

Just don't do it!

anonymous on June 09, 2012:

Is there a trick to make coin gems appear?

b2lcreations on May 31, 2012:

@anonymous: Hey Kelly, I just wanted to let you know, using boosts, can certainly help you attain scores larger than 150k, And getting to 500k is hard, but it's very much so possible. As far as earning coins, I spin the wheel and have 50 friends playing so I earn at least 5k coins a day, and if I play back to back days / 24 hour period I get 2x's that and so on.

Theres easy ways to get coins, even in the game with the coin gem. Don't think those who have reached high scores are cheating. According to my stats I've hit 500k twice since playing over 2 years ago, and those scores were recent thanks to the very new Keystones and the new Rare gem offers. I play and rack up points and spin the wheel daily and I get to use at least a couple of the rare gems and hope I have a great focused game.

I think it's way too hard to earn coins that you must BUY to get the cool power ups. I play and play and still don't earn enough to get the power ups.
