Funko Pop! vs. Nendoroids - What's the Difference?
For toy enthusiasts and collectors, Nendoroids and Funko! Pop figurines give the opportunity to collect unique representations of their favorite pop culture icons. Both series display popular characters from pop culture with large heads and small bodies, but that is essentially where the similarities stop. Collectors interested in learning the difference between these two toy figurines can read on to determine which option is better suited for their collection.
The Variety Of Characters
One brand has produced way more figures than the other!
Funko Pop! figurines are well known for their expansive variety of characters, ranging from superheroes, to talk show hosts like Conan O’Brien. It would be unlikely that a collector would be unable to find a character that hasn’t been emulated as a Funko Pop! In many instances, the same characters are offered in different variations. For example, Conan O'Brian has 34 versions of Funko Pop! figurines. Someone at Funko really likes Conan!
In total, there are approximately nine thousand different Funko Pop! figurines that have been released. And that number leaps to over twenty thousand when we talk about the entire Funko line.
Alternatively, Nendoroids tend to be much more limited. To date, there are about one-thousand Nendoroids that have been released, and typically a character is released only once. Additionally, Nendorids only offer one character with a variety of accessories, which we will dive more into.
The Origins Of The Characters
One company includes pop culture of many themes and eras into their figure line, while the other sticks to pretty much one theme in it's character choice.
As mentioned above, Funko Pop! toys pull characters from all over pop culture including popular movies, TV shows, comic books, and even just well-known figures in the public eye.
Nendoroids are much more limited in where their design inspiration spurs from. Most Nendoroids are based on manga, anime, and video games. Although recently Nendoroids have been modeled after superheroes in the Marvel universe and even some Star Wars characters, they typically represent well-known faces from more niche areas and don’t offer as well known characters as Funko Pop! toys.
Customization Options For The Figures
This is easy, one company offers accessories to customize the figures, while the other does not.
In most cases, Funko Pop! toys do not allow the collector to customize or interchange parts of the toy. Funko Pop! figurines are typically static and may include a stand or an additional item, but the figurine stays the same.
In contrast, Nendoroids offer fans and collectors the option to completely customize their toys. Users can change out faces, body parts, and accessories including weapons and items specific to the character. Some series of Nendoroids even allow for users to utilize different parts of other toys to customize them even further. Nendoroids offer users options to set up entire scenes using dioramas.
The Production Style Differences Between Funko and Nendoroid
These two vinyl figure companies do differ in their production methods.
While Funko Pop! figurines are typically digitally sculpted and then mass-produced in a factory, many Nendoroids are still sculpted by hand or have aspects that are still handmade.
The majority of Nendoroids are still mass-produced in factories, but when a character is first designed the sculptor can choose between 3D image printing or putty sculpting by hand. Additionally, stamping the face on the figurine takes up to 8 machines, and sometimes as many as 100 different paint colors. Because of this, many collectors believe that Nendoroids are of a higher quality and have more elaborate details than Funko Pop! figures.
The Biggest Difference Between Funko Pop! And Nendoroid?
The biggest difference, between you and I, is which one you like the most. There's no good or bad, better or best. It just matters which one you like. Whatever your preference, the world of Funko Pop! toys and Nendoroids offers something for every toy collector and enthusiast. Collectors should do research to determine which figurines they prefer to invest in.
And then enjoy which ever one you decide upon, or enjoy both!
