Defense of the Ancients popularly known as DOTA is basically a World of Warcraft 3 Map where players take the role of one hero among a hundred and battle it out with another player or AI to defend camp and conquer the enemy’s base. The gameplay that this game introduced a couple of years ago attracted millions of gamers across the globe. In fact, it high influenced numerous games nowadays like League of Legends (LOL) and Heroes of Newerth (HON). Despite the presence of games which are closely related to DOTA but with better graphics, many gamers still prefer the classic. If your friends are among the millions who are still playing DOTA and you are interested to start playing the game, choosing the right hero is crucial. Several heroes in DOTA are only effective if controlled by an experienced and highly skilled player. Nevertheless, there are a few which can still perform well despite being under the command of a DOTA beginner. This article will discuss the Top 10 Best DOTA Heroes for Beginners to help aspiring DOTA players be effective even if it’s their first time playing the game.

Aiushtha the Enchantress is an intelligence-type hero considered by many as the best jungler. She is called “Bambi of the Jungle” for a reason. By simply using his second skill (Enchant), she can control a Neutral or Enemy Creep in a certain period of time. While using Enchantress, DOTA beginners can simply jungle during the early stage of the game to avoid bullies and come out once they already purchased items to boost Enchantress’s survivability such as Vanguard, Soul Booster, or Aghanim’s Scepter. Enchantress’s third skill (Guardian Wisps) is also regarded as the best healing spell in DOTA. To add more pain to anyone who plans to kill her, Enchantress’s first skill (Untouchable) can dramatically slow down the attack rate of any attacking hero or creep. This is true for both physical and magical attacks. Here is a complete guide that tackles everything you need to know about Enchantress: DOTA HERO TIPS: ENCHANTRESS

Aggron Stonebreak Ogre Magi has three active skills which might cause confusions but a DOTA beginner can handle it well. Although this hero’s main attribute is intelligence, it has excellent innate tanking abilities. DOTA beginners won’t worry so much about being killed after making a slight mistake while controlling Ogre Magi since his first(Ignite) and second skill (Fire Blast) can disable and cripple an enemy target providing him enough room for escape. Ogre Magi’s ultimate skill (Multi Cast) basically depends on luck so a DOTA Beginner simply needs to cast his first skill as many times possible. You can also be of great help to your team’s carry by boosting his attack and movement speed with your third skill (Bloodlust). Have these facts enticed you to know more about this peculiar and dangerous hero? Here is a complete guide that might help: DOTA HERO TIPS: OGRE MAGI

Naix the Lifestealer is a strength-type hero who can be effective all throughout a game. His high strength gain enabled him to easily survive early game bullies. His second skill (Feast) enables him to gain health points every time he attacks. The amount of health he gains depends on the target’s current health points. Bonus damage is also granted because of this skill making him a perfect hero against tankers or enemy’s with absurdly high health points. Killing neutral creeps for gold and experience is not a challenge for Lifestealer so DOTA beginners can cling to this strategy once enemy heroes started to roam around the map and implement well-organized ambushes. Lifestealer’s first skill (Rage) makes provides magic immunity in a short period of time making him a nightmare of intelligence-type heroes. His third skill (Open Wounds)can slow an enemy down while Lifestealer’s ultimate skill (Infest) can serve as an excellent escape or ambushing tool. What more can you ask for? Read this complete guide about Naix the Lifestealer to even improve your chance of using him properly despite being new to DOTA: DOTA HERO TIPS: LIFESTEALER

You need to kill Skeleton King twice before totally eliminating him. This fact alone is enough for him to be a part of this list. DOTA beginners are usually careless about their health points so they usually die even up against normal creeps. With Skeleton King’s ultimate skill (Reincarnation), they’ll be granted with another chance after dying out of battle or recklessness. King Leoric the Skeleton King is also one of the few heroes in DOTA with only one active spell so he doesn’t require extremely fast hands to be controlled accordingly. This hero can do well in the jungle due to his second (Vampiric Aura) and third (Critical Strike) skill. A spell with stun and slow effect which cools down every ten seconds completes his arsenal. Skeleton King is a force not to be reckoned with even if controlled by a DOTA beginner. But before you decide to use him on your next DOTA game, be sure to browse through this complete guide first: DOTA HERO TIPS: SKELETON KING

Huskar the Sacred Warrior is a hero suited for DOTA beginners due to various reasons. He is among the few strength-type heroes with a ranged attack. You’ll be less prone to early game bullies with this hero since you don’t need to get close in killing an enemy creep. Sacred Warrior also boasts a skill (Burning Spear)perfect for bullying enemy heroes. The damage will stack so hitting a target with it in succession will further boost its effect. This hero’s survivability is at par with the best in DOTA with his first skill (Inner Vitality) yet the most dangerous skill of Sacred Warrior is the third one (Berserker’s Blood). It improves his attack speed and physical damage for every life point missing. This only means Sacred Warrior will get stronger as he closes to death. A DOTA Beginner can recklessly dash into a battle and eventually win against one or two enemy heroes with Sacred Warrior’s third skill. If you want more, here is a guide containing every fact you need to know about Sacred Warrior: DOTA HERO TIPS: SACRED WARRIOR

Barathrum the Spiritbreaker owns a spot on this list because of his ability to bash enemies (Greater Bash) and render even the most dangerous DOTA hero useless. Having excessively high physical or magic damage is pointless if you simply can’t move. Spiritbreaker’s first (Charge of Darkness) and ultimate skills (Nether Strike) are perfect for ambushing an enemy hero regardless if he is on the other side of the map. Spiritbreaker is a strength-type hero so it won’t be had for him to survive after a ferocious team clash leaving a DOTA beginner more opportunities to gain more gold and experience. Spiritbreaker can also easily escape in a tight situation through his first and second skill (Empowering Haste). With the right items, Spiritbreaker can be an unstoppable force even under the control of someone who never played DOTA before.

Kardel the Dwarven Sniper boasts the highest range in DOTA. He is an agility type hero so he can deliver high amounts of physical damage in a short period of time. Despite having measly base health points, Dwarven Sniper deserves to own the fourth spot on this list because it’s almost impossible for creeps to get near him. A DOTA beginner can stay in a safe distance while killing enemy creeps and gain both experience and gold. His second (Headshot)and third skill (Take Aim) made him a perfect killing machine. Escape is also impossible within the wide range of Dwarven Sniper due of his ultimate skill (Assassinate). Here is a good source of facts anyone who is interested about using Dwarven Sniper needs to know: DOTA HERO TIPS: DWARVEN SNIPER

Axe the Moghul Kahn is strong enough to withstand a wave of creeps at level 1. His first and third skill (Counter Helix) made him one of the best tankers in DOTA. There are various ways to play this hero but the most common, and perfect for beginners is to block enemy creeps. By doing so, you’ll have a better chance of triggering your third skill and killing them all at once. You’ll gain both experience and gold in no time by implementing this strategy. To keep enemy heroes at bay as you harass their creeps, simply spam Mogul Kahn’s second skill (Battle Hunger). His ultimate skill (Great Fortitude) grants him excessive bonus strength points making it easy for him to reach four thousand health points in the late game. This is true even if you won’t place any item life-supporting items in his inventory. Aside from being tough, Centaur Warchief is a great hero for DOTA beginners because of his third skill (Return) which damages anyone who dares to attack him. The damage dealt is based on his strength so purchasing a Heart of Tarasque and other items which boosts his strength will make this skill further lethal. Traxex the Drow Ranger has the number one spot because of an obvious reason. She can be effective during the late game even with weak items. Her agility gain is among the best in DOTA giving her the ability to land ferocious physical attacks in lightning speed. Drow Ranger’s first skill (Frost Arrows) can drastically cripple an enemy stopping any foe from reaching her easily. Simply purchasing a Helm of Dominator or Mask of Madness will allow Drow Ranger to farm in the jungle with ease. Drow Ranger is always my answer whenever a DOTA beginner asks me for suggestions regarding what hero to use. Controlling her is a breeze although Drow Ranger’s measly health points will be your main concern. But then again, a Lothar’s Edge or Force Staff will do the trick. don't know about enchantress but i disagree with huskarr, sniper and drow!enchantress needs a lot of play huskarr effectively you need to pay a lot of attention to your map and surrounding(badly placed lifebreak on a hero that LOOKS like he's alone can get you killed in seconds.) sniper is very fragile and need a careful positioning to be effective.and drow no matter what you do is very fragile and her ulty turns off when enemy heroes are nearby(within 450 aoe).if lothar dagger stunner got close to her without her noticing well you can count the stars in the sky.besides all those heroes are carries.they need their farm.for begginers who don't even know how to last hit properly things gonna hit fan when they are underlvld and underfarmed!

i'll list my pick here

crystal maiden(though you need to be carefull of her low health and move speed)

sven(he's fairly straight forward.don't need a lot of management(though he need some)with his cleave he can farm fairly good on mid game and his stun and his roar is good for getting out of early gank attempt and his ulty is the beast warcry ulty and stun most heroes die early.but you need to be carfull of his very low mana(can be solved by creating a magic wand and getting an early stat boost skill at lvl 2)

Enchant? Sniper? Huskar?

Enchant needs good micro skills to perform properly

Sniper needs good positioning to carry well, he has no escape and no hp meaning no mistakes must be made

Huskar needs hp management, though with the orb effect removal, one item could negate a lot of problems. But new players don't know that

Sarah Forester from Australia on February 05, 2014:

Naix the Lifestealer was my go to champion when I was first starting out, great guide on the topic!

Michael from Australia on April 22, 2013:

Ench required mircro-ing skills, something that requires a lot of skill (unless you have experience with sc/sc2). Probably not recommended for new players.

aDotaPlayer on April 08, 2013:

Enchantress? Incredibly hard hero to play effectively due to micro, and knowledge of the jungle camps and having horrible strength gain making her incredibly squishy against casters. List looks good, except for that one.
