I am a writer that will try to impart to you a entertaining story I hope that you will enjoy.
Okay, I will say that The Medium is visually stunning in all the right ways. Not only just for motion capturing but for the art style they went with when regarding the spirit world. It was based off the art from Zdzisław Beksiński. I have not heard of them before, but that being said I may look more into them now.
All because of how the spirit world looked and felt, at first it was a little scary your first time in. Its Alien, and yet familiar at the same time. I love the way that they split the cut scenes between the spirit world and the physical world, it really added to each of them and really makes the spirit world feel connected. I wont spoil what it looks like as I feel you need to see it for yourself.
That being said, The creatures seem to take a page out of Del Toro's play book. Very well done, and very scary. This game is even more beautiful when you have a next gen console. The series X optimization really adds a lot to this game and the atmosphere of it.
Honestly, this game was amazing. These are my thoughts on the game as a whole. But overall, I really enjoyed this game.
- The controls. Its not super impactful due to the story nature of the game and usually, it wont impact you all that much. But it plays like a newer version of the tank controls from Resident Evil back in the day. Not necessarily bad, just gets a little rough to use during certain parts of the game when you are trying to rush through as your being chased down by ever hungry spirits.
- The puzzles: Honestly, I don't have much to say here. I loved the puzzles were challenging without being too hard. The only one that stumped me was one later on dealing with water pumps. But that was mainly due to me moving too fast through different rooms and how dark the room was, rather than the difficulty of the puzzles. I would really say, that if you enjoy solving puzzles in games this one would be a good one to add to your collection.
- Monsters?: One thing about this game is it makes you think. Whats the difference between monsters and humans? A choice? upbringing? Powers? I would say that its subjective. But one thing is for sure, the monsters that this game does show you? Terrifying. Not just in form, but in dialogue. When describing this particular aspect of this game to a friend? I legit got goose bumps thinking about it. I wont spoil anything other than to say " Want to play dress up?"
Spirit powers, I love you.
Okay, so in this game you feel equal parts badass and spirit detective. I really hope to see more of this game in the future. The abilities really won me over, They are not over used so that they take away from the story. Not only that, they make sense for the placement of where you use them and do not detract from the tension of the game.
The way that you gain access to the abilities and the explanation of how they are powered is really cool and honestly? Really sells Marianne's character. This especially shows later on when you see how different those powers look.
As I said above, I give this game a 10/10.
Here is why, what this game does best is tell a story. A terrifying, heart wrenching, and hopeful story. But what I love most about it is how it does it, much like dark souls you glean the story from the surroundings. The state of the building, blood stains, the general atmosphere. You can almost feel it, The main area of the game is almost a character in it of itself.
Besides the surroundings, there are the collectables and echos as well as other things that show up later in the story that really build the world there and let you in on what happened there. I honestly cannot say this enough, use headphones and immerse yourself in this game. You will not regret it.
