The Medium Stuck Between Two Realities

What is "The Medium"

The medium is a brand new adventure horror game that recently came out for the Xbox Series X/S and PC. It follows the main character as she tries to solve an unwinding mystery using her Medium abilities. The main draw of the game is the dual reality mechanic in which you control the character on two plains of existence. When this mechanic happens the game has to render two different scenes at once, which in my opinion is a remarkable feat. I don't want to give away any spoilers hence why I am being quite spare on the details. Just know that if you are a horror fan and have Game Pass this is worth the download.

"Medium" Gameplay

Like I mentioned the bulk of the gameplay revolves around playing the game in two realities. They are the reality that you and I live in, and the reality where spirits dwell.

The architecture between the two realities are similar in terms of structure but the spirt reality is a fair bit spookier and skeletally. Another mechanic worth mentioning is that each reality can be affected by what is done in the other reality. Flip a switch in the real world and it might open a new path in the spirt realm. You just never know and you are encouraged to explore every nook and cranny, you may even find that one special item that solves a puzzle farther down the line. What about combat you may ask....it is non existent. Medium relies on puzzles and exploration to keep the players interest and at 7-9 hours of gameplay, its does a pretty good job.

Is the Medium Worth your time

This as always is a personal question because my opinion may differ from others. Is this game good, I'll say it's okay. The aspect of controlling a character in two different worlds is a cool concept and it is done well. The engine handles the rendering very well so the game does stay smooth. The story does keep you engaged and the various readable items sprinkled about help flush things out. The graphics are next gen in some places but do look dull in others. My thoughts are that the graphics were toned down to allow the game to hit 60 FPS. This would then just mean that optimization for the new Xbox isn't quite there yet. This has always been the issue when it comes to new consoles as developers learn the ins and outs of the unit. I doubt that the power of the Xbox Series X/S has even been a quarter tapped yet. Is it worth a playthrough, yes but with a caveat.

The Caveat to The Medium

The Medium is $67 Canadian ($45 USD) on steam and for that price the game may not be worth a play through. The thing that will give this game exposure and allow millions of players to play the game is Game Pass. This game launched day 1 on game pass and that's a good thing. I have said it so many times that Game pass in my opinion is the best game service out there. With the Medium being the first game developed for the Series X/S it is going to get a lot of attention on game pass. So should you buy the game at full price...maybe not. However if you have game pass if is worth the download.
