The writer masters the dark arts of Magic:The Gathering when not at work selling construction and heavy equipment.
In Magic: the Gathering EDH or Commander format, playing against mono black decks could be one hell of a ride as they can end games in just a few turns by pulling out their early combos. In this article, we will list down some of the best non-black cards that pose a threat to these masters of dark arts.
1. Rest in Peace
First in our list is the white enchantment Rest in Peace. For just two mana, this card exiles all cards from graveyards and would not allow any single card to be put there again after. Most black combos use and abuse cards from graveyards thus this card will for sure ruin their game winning moves. Yes, it will give the undead eternal peace.
2. Aven Mindcensor
Next in our list is this white bird wizard creature Aven Mindcensor. One key reason why Black EDH decks can pull their combos right away is because of their access to tutors or those cards that allow them to search for any card in their decks when they want them, when they need them. With Aven Mindcensor in play, it limits their library searches to top four library cards only. Demonic Tutors and Vampiric Tutors wouldn't be of big help to their game after this little birdie hits play.
3. Angel of Jubilation
This white angel creature stops any ability requiring life pay and creature sacrifice — a thing black always benefit from. Prevent them from digging their libraries with cards like Necropotence and sacrificing their creatures with Phyrexian Altar and Ashnod's Altar for combos they might have up their sleeves.
4. Containment Priest
Black always find its ways to reanimate their creatures from their graveyard using cards like Animate Dead, Necromancy, and Reanimate itself. Or sometimes use the undying ability from Mikaeus the Unhallowed to pair and go for the kill with Triskelion. For just three mana, this white human cleric Containment Priest will prevent the dead from being brought to life again while she's in play.
5. Grafdigger's Cage
Again, locking up those Gravecrawlers in graveyards and potential target spells of Yawgmoth's Will, will stop those recurring combos to happen. For just one colorless mana, Grafdigger's Cage is one piece you should never miss putting in your deck when playing against black EDH players.
6. Ground Seal
Looks like green has its own weapons against those black reanimate spells. For just two mana, the enchantment Ground Seal prevents players from targeting cards in graveyards. Say goodbye to cards like Dance of the Dead and Beacon of Unrest.
Turn their sacrifices into your draw fuel. That's what this two to cast green enchantment is all about. For every black creature sacrificed with a Phyrexian Altar or Ashnod's Altar, you get to draw a card and give you the possible upper hand to keep up and get the advantage.
8. Elephant Grass
A good way to stop that Army of the Damned from attacking you is putting Elephant Grass in front of them. Sounds like Plants vs. Zombies isn't it? That's what this green enchantment does. For just one mana, it prevents black creatures from attacking you. Non-black creatures can attack you though, only if their controller pays two colorless mana for each attacking creature. Just remember to pay the cumulative upkeep cost until you come up with an army of your own.
9. Seeds of Innocence
Last but not the least in our list is the green sorcery Seeds of Innocence. For just three mana, it will destroy all artifacts in play without the possibility of regeneration. Black does not have cards like Cultivate or Kodama's Reach for ramp, but rather rely its mana fuel on mana-producing artifacts like Mana Crypt or Sol Ring. Thus, destroying artifacts early in the game will slow them down and even ruin their engines like Skullclamp and Phyrexian Altar.
There you have it, some of the best non-black cards to play against Black EDH Decks. Please do not hesitate to leave your thoughts on other cards you think will also play well against Black to complete our list. Happy gaming everyone!
