"Super Mario" CultureFly Collector Box Review

The Super Nintendo Collector's Set

CultureFly surprised Nintendo fans last year by releasing the Super Nintendo Collector’s Set. It included a temperature-changing Game Boy mug, collectible coin, Nintendo cartridge coasters, Game Boy notebook, Super Nintendo console backpack, plush NES controller, and a fashionable mystery item.

I’m guessing that the reception went over quite well for this collectible box, because not long after they followed it up with the Super Mario Collector’s Set. This time, however, I feel that CultureFly stepped up its game with the quality of the contents.

The Box Aesthetics

The box is decorated with the famed question blocks that Mario punches throughout the game collecting various items such as coins, mushrooms, and stars on his many journeys.

The bright, yellow, and shiny finish stood out to me on the store shelf. Maybe this was also done for marketing purposes (and not strictly for design). Nevertheless, it does catch one’s attention; especially if you’re a fan of the Super Mario Bros franchise.

Mushroom Lunch Bag

When I opened the box, the first thing that I noticed was the Mushroom Lunch Bag sitting at the forefront. It’s 7" long x 7" wide x 5" deep, insulated and well-made. The only thing that I didn’t like was that it's so small. A child could carry this to school with a sandwich and bag of chips, but there'd be no room left for a drink or snack for later.

Nevertheless, this would still be a great collector's item. There just isn't a Mario Bros lunch box or bag quite like this anywhere on the web.

Coin Block Notepad

There’s not too much to this one. What you see is what you get. The only thing that I disliked about this item is that it’s so small. I would have liked to see this notepad the standard size of 3” x 3” instead of 2" x 2".

I think this item would probably be best as a keep-sake rather than actually putting it to use. I've never seen a notepad like this in a store or other collector box. So, it's definitely unique.

Collectible Coin

This mystery item box includes a collectible coin just like the previous Super Nintendo Box that I reviewed. This coin measures 1 3/4" and has “Super Mario 1” on one side and a picture of the Question Block on the other. This coin also comes in a protective sleeve.

Iron-on Patches

In this set of three cute iron-on patches, you get a star, 1-Up mushroom, and a regular mushroom. These patches are very colorful and would look great on any backpack, jacket, or satchel.

Super Mario Beanie

This beanie is soft and well-made. It’s an eye-catching red with the Mario “M” on the front. However, I did find it to be a little too big for my head. I understand that they went for “one-size fits all”, but with the theme of the box being geared more towards a child with smaller items, there is no way that this would fit on a child’s head properly without a good amount of excess material hanging off the back.

Question Block Scarf

The design on the scarf is done very well and the yellow is nice and bright. It’s made out of 100% polyester and the feel of the material reminds me of felt. The only thing that I didn’t like is that it’s so thin; however, I did put it on for a few minutes and it did seem to keep my neck warm. Then again, it’s the middle of summer here in the United States and it’s in the upper 90s outside. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to really give it a good test until this winter.

The Mystery Item

Okay, now for the last and final item—the mystery item! Just a warning, if you haven’t picked up this collector box yet and don’t want the surprise to be spoiled, hit your browser’s back button now. Otherwise, keep reading.

Drum roll, please…. The mystery item in this box set is the 1-Up Mushroom Figure. This figure features a green 1-Up mushroom sitting atop a bright, yellow coin block. It's made from thick vinyl and measures 4 1/2" tall.

Personally, I like the mystery item in this box way better than the one in the previous set that I reviewed. I think this item is of higher quality and would appeal to a broad range of Super Mario fans.
