As a player, the only thing we do is enjoying what game has to offer. You can’t do anything about it. You can only sit down and relax playing the video game.
But what if you can actually make changes to the game. What if, with your expertise in game design, you can make the game better according to your taste? You can, with game modifications. Or in short, mods.
So, what are mods? Mods are tweaks and additional contents made by the community with an aim to alter features & elements of a video game. It is not a new thing as it already existed before 2000s. Games like Quake II back then have mods created by the community. Since then, new and innovative mods are emerging.
If you’re into PC gaming, the chance is you are not foreign to such term. Nowadays, you can put mods in video game platforms other than PC. Some mobile games are even mod supported!
Why people mod a game?
1. To Add Content
Say you are not satisfied with what your game has to offer. If you wish, you can add additional stuffs into it. Mods come in various forms such as characters, weapons and vehicles. They are either made from the ground up or ported from other games.
Ever wondered how does it feel to drive a real-life car in fictional cities in GTA games? What about playing as a Marvel superhero in Street Fighter V? With mods, such possibilities can be materialized.
2. To Enhance A Game
Sometimes, gamers want to enhance gameplay and graphics to the highest level. Installing mods allows you to improve both gameplay and graphics, making the game significantly looks more aesthetically pleasing and plays better. Some mods even have unique & distinctive features.
Using graphic mods, for example, can turn an older game into a game with best-looking graphics that rivals that of newer games. With various mods, you can even turn a video game into an entirely different game.
3. Restoration Purpose
Due to constraints and mandatory changes, developers cannot add every stuffs been made. You can add them back should the files still lies within the game. Yes, players can restore contents removed by the developer into playable state.
An example of restoration mod is The Sith Lords Restored Content Modification for Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. By installing the mod, the players can experience, as the maker said, “as close as possible what Obsidian originally intended it to be”.
4. Just For The Fun Of It!
Sometimes, you might want to add fun stuff to break the serious atmosphere. Luckily, there are tons of fun mods available on the internet. These mods are developed with wackiness in mind. Installing these mods can add a comedic feel to a highly serious game and lighten the player’s mood.
Need For Speed Most Wanted: Pepega Edition, for instance, comes with wacky mods and replaces the main hero BMW M3 GTR into a car ported from Java-era NFS game. The mod adds a funny twist, turning the racing game masterpiece into a meme galore.
Due to its game altering nature, game modifications can stir some problems. Notable is legal issues where installed modifications possibly make changes in game feature. Restoring and adding concerning mods can also cause an issue. Example of this is the infamous Hot Coffee mod for GTA San Andreas which managed to raise some eyebrows.
There is also a backlash against paid mods; mods that are locked behind paywalls. Yes, you can make some bucks into your wallet by making and putting your mods on sale. While some support this practice, many players are against it as it against with what game mods supposed to be. The case of Steam paid mods is an example, where the decision to allow creators to sell mods was finally nixed for good after backlash from gamers, noting how unfair the decision was and the concern over profit-sharing issues.
Mods Should Be Appreciated
Regardless of reasons and controversies surrounding mods, modding a game should not be forbidden. Instead, mods should receive enough appreciation.
Mods help gamers to enjoy the final product at the optimal level. Bringing a video game to its highest level of enjoyment also greatly increase its replayability. This is true as shown by older games like GTA San Andreas and Need For Speed Most Wanted still have players due to their moddability.
Modding is not merely adding this and adding that. It is an effort of the community to improve game quality in nearly all aspects. It is a form of attention given by the players to developers to keep the game up to expectation and being playable in any way.
