Modern Warfare 3 Sniping: MSR Sniper Rifle Class Guide!

Say hello to the MSR Sniper Rifle.

The Modern Warfare 3 MSR Sniper Rifle is often only used effectively for quick-scoping, or trying to pull-off some extreme trick-shots. Whilst the MSR Sniper Rifle is good for showing off your 'awesome skills' to your friends and on YouTube, it should be well known that when this Sniper Rifle is used properly, it can be the ultimate killing tool!

The MSR Sniper Rifle, from experience, is a great gun for taking down enemies which are quite far away from you, but in my opinion not for if an enemy is very close to you. The Sniper Rifle will often perform a 'one shot kill' when directly on target, although when it fails to do so or you happen to miss-judge the shot, you will struggle to fire that extra bullet to finish them off.

Therefore, if you have a good defensive position on the enemy, who can't see you properly, you should be able to dominate them with this Sniper Rifle, but remember that you will not always be in such a convenient situation... So it is highly recommended that you learn how to quick-scope.

Best Class for the MSR Sniper Rifle.

Through-out Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, many players have experimented with different classes, attachments and other variables which best suit the MSR Sniper Rifle. It's arguable that all of this comes down to personal preference, although whilst this is true, there are some recommendations that I can give to you.

For example, you almost definitely don't want to use the silencer with this gun, unless you are camping and are prepared to take a second shot if the gun doesn't perform a one hit kill.

My personal favourite and recommended class to use with the MSR Sniper Rifle has to be...

  • Sleight of Hand Pro - Quicker reloading and weapon swapping.
  • Quick Draw Pro - Faster Aiming and recovery after Grenade usage.
  • Marksman Pro - Enemies names appear from a longer distance, and the ability to hold your breath longer.

  1. Stability.

  2. Impact.
  3. Focus.
  4. Kick. (Only if you intend to keep scoped in for every kill.)

Kill Streaks - Support Package:

  • UAV - Enables you to see enemy location of the mini-map.
  • Advanced UAV - Enables you to see the enemies location on the mini-map and which direction they are facing.
  • Stealth Bomber - Sends a B-2 Spirit to drop bombs in a straight line, depending on where you position the marker.

MW3 MSR Sniper Rifle Strengths.

This Sniper Rifle has many great strengths as mentioned before, it has a great damage and range ability to it, and it has the ability to almost always pull-off a one hit kill. However some other strengths are that the gun is extremely accurate, as well as quick at aiming when used with Quickdraw.

Quickdraw allows the player to aim down their sights quicker than usual, but when you're using the Sniper Rifles this perk is often remarked as 'god sent'. Especially when you find yourself within a situation where there a re multiple enemies coming from different directions, this ability to aim quickly down the scope, will make it possible to both survive and own in that situation. A word of notice is that you will be able to pull-off some cheeky quick-scopes if you use this perk effectively and if you know how to quick-scope effectively.

This basically means only shoot when you just see the cross-hairs appear in your scope. If you don't wait for the cross-hairs to come up before shooting, it will be classed as a 'no scope' which are highly in-accurate. (Unless you use one of those strafing tricks...)

MW3 MSR Sniper Rifle Weaknesses.

Yes, there are unfortunately some down-sides to using this gun, like the fact that if you miss your first shot, it can be quite difficult to re-align your scope to fire accurately on the target again. This can be counter-acted by the proficiency called "Kick", but that would be at the sacrifice of not being able to use the "Stability" proficiency instead.

Plus, once you've fired that first shot, the enemy will now have a clear view of your position on the mini-map, and judging from the sound which direction you are in too! So you may be wondering why it's best not to use the silencer in that case, but from my experience, the silencer only proved to heighten the chance of not getting the one hit kills...

Another point would be that you are going to struggle to use a sniper rifle of any kind, when you're going against players who have the Assault Rifles or Sub-machine guns.

A final weakness that this Sniper Rifle does have is that if you often experience "lag" when playing, you will find that even if your accuracy is brilliant, you'll still sometimes miss the shot or get a "hit-marker". So, if you do find that you often get lags in Modern Warfare 3, it would be better for you to either get a better internet connection, or use the Barrett .50 CAL Sniper Rifle or something else entirely...

msr gets hit markers up close but is always 1 shot kill from distance. I quickscope and if someone is 2 feet away I get a hit marker. and silencers weaken this gun at any range except for very far shots. then the silencer helps

Haha you're quite the comedian aren't you? Thanks for your comments they have definitely been fun to read :)

ill have to agree with you all. My favorite snipe is the woodcock. It flys around at night stalking it's prey on you gamers- and lays down a big white dump on your head - like a one kill head shot poop. Like everything you all are saying is so true Jack. Even after I have earned my doctorate, this is the real thing. Who wants to actually work for a living when they can stay couped ( I'll define that if you need me to). Up for hours at a time. You all are really making a difference in the playtime, sniper, silencer , knifer, semtexer, world. Thanks guys - you all are really making a change for the betterment of all. Peace Jack.

Hey this is my opinion, but i reckon the MSR isn't very good at all, in my opinion the Barrett .50 cal is the best quickscoping weapon ever to exist in any COD game

i have to say will using the silencer on the msr you might have to use recon sense u will get allot more hit markers and the recon will show were the enemy is facing and making it like a little motion sensor combined with a advanced uav. Im not very sure i think its recon pro but try it on for 1 chance.

Interesting! It seems that many people have stated that using a suppressor on sniper rifles is actually good, however whenever I use it I seem to die a lot more than usual. However, I will definitely try to use the variable scope to see if that makes a difference! Thanks for your suggestion!

Breyor M. on April 10, 2012:

I think the range drop off of the suppresser is counter-acted by the range increase of the variable. i use the MSR suppressed and beast with my undetectible class map side to map side with consistent "One Shot One Kills". also camping shouldn't aply to sniping because that how the class should be used...that's just my penny on the matter.

Yeah I've heard similar things from other players, but for me I find that a sniper rifle becomes incredibly hard to do well with, unless I'm consistently getting those one shot kills. I had actually forgotten to mention anything about the variable scope zoom, which as you mentioned is great from scoping from different distances!

Jasondude8 on March 25, 2012:

Actually, the msr with a silencer is pretty good. It loses the bodyshot OSOK, but retains the headshot one, even across the map. Combine it with the variable zoom scope, and you can be sniping from incredible distances.
