Minecraft Review: Difference Between Classic vs Alpha.

Today I want to talk about a little game that has quickly become similar to a shining diamond for the indie gaming nation. Unfortunately, “today” was about 2 days ago when I got hit with math assignments and C++ homework. With the FFXIV Beta over and retail release of the special edition in the next two days, I’ve been spending my time completing as many school assignments as possible and playing this little gem, Minecraft.

Minecraft is an indie title written in java by Markus Persson, also known as Notch. After playing for a bit, it’s quite obvious where it takes its inspiration from; Infiniminer, Tycoon styled games, Dungeon Keeper and Dwarf Fortress. The point of the game…is… um… the end of the game is…uh… … there is no point or end of the game. Minecraft is a randomly generated beautiful (blocky) world you can screw around and build in. The community is strong and Notch stays close to the community. He is determined and passionate about the game and attempts to dole out surprise updates each Friday if time allows.

The unpaid version of Minecraft is called the classic, it is even possible to open up and play on classic Minecraft servers without paying a penny, but to get into Alpha (and beyond) you will have to pay a onetime fee. In classic mode you have an unlimited amount of blocks and you are simply limited by your imagination. There is no material cost and no tools required to break/place the blocks, just imagination and lots of patience to put your creations together. Here is an example of a classic server decorated by several Minecraft masters.

Hes lagging from the pure awesome.

Beyond Classic, we have Alpha; the current release of Minecraft. In-short, this is the paid version that will be constantly updated and maintained by Notch for those that have paid for the game. The major difference between Alpha and Classic is Survival. This is the meat and bones of nearly all Minecraft updates. Whether it’s the creatures getting updated, a new item to craft or the engine getting a facelift to generate proper terrain… It’s all for Alpha Survival.

One major thing currently in the works and being patched up/worked on to get the bugs out, is Alpha Survival Multiplayer; also known as Survival Multiplayer (SMP). Alpha Survival is what turns people into real Minecrafters. There are no unlimited blocks, (well technically, the world is infinite…or 3 times larger than the earth…Infinite enough for me! :P) , monsters that just want you dead, crafting system, combat system, armor, weapons, and the infamous creeper. Trust me; it will do you well to remember that hated name. Creeeeeeeepeeeerrrrrrrr…. Sssssssssss…

For every block you wish to put down, you must first mine, dig, craft, or harvest it out of the earth. So, in your head, you’re thinking “I want to make a gigantic fort with a tower to the sky!” … Have fun digging up that amount out of the ground and then building it from the ground up...block by block. I’m dead serious; it’s incredibly slow but so rewarding.

Alright, there are probably those of you out there thinking right now, “Well hey, this sounds incredibly boring, where the hell is the action?!” to which I reply, “Make it yourself/with a friend or go back to Halo.” Minecraft isn’t a game about action… although in theory you can mod the server to act in various ways or do various things. Some of the free custom server software that’s currently out there and some of the private server creations are amazing. Minecraft Earth, Water loops, a calculator, a universal clock, skydiving servers and various other oddities out there are amazing. I saw “rocket” launching blocks on one server.

For the Pokémon fans out there

There are also many trap maps that are currently in the process of being created by some frightfully intelligent and somewhat sadistic minds. You see that sign in the snowfield that says “Do not move forward”? It probably means that there is a “minefield” behind the sign. Using snow as a cover block and a “pressure plate” over a hole, your next square might be a pit fall into some TnT… Also known as your death. Although the most basic trap is the sand/torch trap, they are very effective in eliminating a player that enters a place you do not wish them to go

When Survival Multiplayer gets pumped out I would imagine the modding/software part of the community to go nuts by allowing different modes of play using the current server software. A few of the current ideas waiting on Survival Multiplayer are Castle v Castle PvP, Zombie Survival, Roleplay, Traps and Dungeons, Teambuild, Landfill, and Mob Farming.

The next addition? A volcano... As soon as I find some lava.

The next addition? A volcano... As soon as I find some lava.

This is something I had built a month or two ago. I stopped playing for a bit because I wanted to figure more about how the files were put together and saved. There were many private servers and map editing software for Classic servers. There are several map editors and custom server software now being worked on/coded to work with the Alpha server format. It will take some time but it will be worth it.

Minecraft is a game I highly recommend to anyone looking for something new. It will suck the hours of your day away, and you will love every minute of it. If you ever get bored, you can just go online and find other people or look at what other people have done/gather ideas for your next project. If you don’t want to fork up money yet and want to play, remember that Minecraft Classic is still available!

I was thinking of starting up a server… Ill update my hub if I decide to go with it. Probably a 24hour flatland freebuild.

@RD2D4: Classic is pretty much creative mode from several years ago... Beta as it stands has the creative mode option and comes with flying as well.

@Matthew: Good luck with your human head! Hope it looks cool!

This game is awesome! I can't wait until my human head is done. I added a hollow brain and everything!!

um witch of these has creative mode!!!

Can't deny how awesome classic still is. Even though it isn't updated to Beta standards, it was very cool of Notch to keep it open for everyone.

Keep on Craftin! :D

Brandon on May 03, 2011:

I play the classic. It's awesome!!!

Agreed Wholeheartedly. I would take one man with a passion over a mega money corporation any day. That goes without saying, some off the wall producers like Atlus, Level-5, and non-ff Square Enix teams never cease to amaze me with their off-beat and unique games.

Indie games pwn. I think over the last 4-5 years I've spent 95% of my gaming time on indie games. When you have a guy in his garage with a passion for creating a great game the end result is going to be a hell of a lot better than a mega company with an eye on the $$$. Congrats to Notch and the growing Minecraft franchise!

Yea I saw. 1 to 1 scale motel of the Enterprise. That is going to be sick/majorly awesome when its finally completed.

I hope he saves the map incase a griefer pops in when he opens it to the public... Or auto admins all of the blocks so people cant edit the map.

Either way, its freaking insane.

A few other ones I've found are the 16 and 32 bit calculators that use sand to compute binary and other forms of mathematics... Its ridiculous.

Have you seen the guy making the starship Enterprise?

Minecraft is nuts.

Least the "Cloth" block is in alpha :) Yea, i can't wait till the colored cloth block gets in. Its probably going to be a little confusing at first considering all of the possible colors.

What I would like is a move able object similar to a gate or door that allows water though and is activated by red-dust. At the moment the doors are the only such open-close objects but they dont allow water through so the only plausible traps involve the thief clipping away an obvious block or a highly intricate Pressure plate/TNT trap that would either kill the player or (CAREFULLY?) blow up the blocks in the way to execute the trap.

Ah TnT. you are such a fickle mistress of destruction.

aloan on October 12, 2010:

Loving it and I can't believe how fun it is! I want colored cloth to come to alpha so bad. This would integrate classic into alpha, for all the fun you can get! (fear not, a "dye cloth" feature is being considered)
