The History of Lego Friends

The Lego Friends line was begun in 2012 and has since become one of Lego's most popular series. Set in the suburbs of fictional Heartlake City, five friends (Emma, Olivia, Stephanie, Mia and Andrea) experience everyday life while participating in their favorite activities - everything from the performing arts and animals to invention and design.

In addition to the 5 core characters, there have been another 29 minor characters introduced so far such as Sophie (a veterinarian), Ms. Stephens (a science teacher at Heartlake High) and Livi (a popstar).

Together their exploits are recounted in a number of books and animated movies including a new 2016 direct-to-DVD movie titled Lego Friends: Girlz 4 Life and a new animated Lego series airing on Netflix.

Prior to the launch of Friends, Lego estimates that only 10% of Lego customers were girls. In the first year of launch alone, sales to girls tripled. As a female child of the 80's I was a part of that small percent of girls that loved Lego. However, my sister and many other girlfriends did not share my passion which I firmly believe was their loss. Lego building not only creates opportunities for role-play but introduces children to vital problem-solving skills as well as spatial reasoning skills. Thank you Lego for opening up this exciting world for my fellow girls!

The Friends: Their Interests and Pets

The Lego Friends characters are technically called mini-dolls instead of the usual "minifigures" as they have more detail and movability while remaining roughly the same size. The Friends sets themselves are unique in that they contain many exclusive pastel colors.

Andrea: Big into the performing arts, Andrea sings, dances, acts and writes. She also loves cooking, computer games and her pet rabbit.

Olivia: A lover of learning, Olivia enjoys nature, science, history and inventing. She has two cats and a bird.

Stephanie: A soccer player and organizer, Stephanie is not only active but loves planning activities for her friends. She also has a dog and a bunny.

Emma: A fashion guru, Emma loves designing jewelry and clothing in addition to interior design and giving makeovers. Emma absolutely loves horses.

Mia: An avid animal lover and outdoors girl, Mia loves camping and horseback riding as well as helping animals. She personally has two dogs and a horse.

These major characters' interests come from the stories created around them for the Lego animated movies. However, girls of all ages can easily match their own interests with their favorite animals and characters for unlimited custom combinations!

ALL of the Friends Sets!

Included in the galleries below are ALL of the Lego Friends sets released so far (not including seasonal, value/super packs, accessories and promo sets).

Galleries are organized by Price (highest to lowest) and within each gallery by Piece-Count (also highest to lowest). It should be noted that prices are based on the recommended retail price at release. Most Lego sets only stay in stores for 1-2 years before they are retired. Retired sets often carry a higher price tag on the second-hand market. All that to say, if you are interested in any of the newer sets now, you might not want to wait...

Click on the Thumbnails... For each of the photo galleries below, please use the thumbnail photos to scroll through the images listed by piececount from largest to smallest. (Each photo also contains a subtitle noting the set's name, part number, year of release and piece count.)

Listed above are ALL of the Lego Friends sets with a recommended retail price over $40. These currently range in size from 343 pieces up to 1,552 pieces and only two sets (the Grand Hotel and Shopping Mall) have an RRP over $100 - very good for Lego. These largest sets contain the most mini-dolls and are the fastest way to build a playable Heartlake City making them excellent birthday and Christmas gifts or for anytime you want to make a big statement to your litttle girl!

Example of a Mid-Size Friends Set

Seen above are ALL of the Lego Friends sets with a recommended retail price between $30 and $39.99. These sets currently range in size from 222 pieces up to 473 pieces. These large sets oftain contain multiple mini-dolls and and are great way for girls to build their own custom-interest-based Heartlake City.

Shown above are all of the Lego Friends sets with a recommended retail price between $20 and $29.99 - a great pricepoint for Lego. These sets currently range in size from 218 pieces up to 365 pieces and each contain one or more mini-dolls. In addition to expanding Heartlake City, these sets make the perfect gift for girlfriends' birthday parties!

Listed above are all of the Lego Friends sets with a recommended retail price of $19.99. These sets currently range in size from 183 pieces up to 254 pieces. Everyone knows Lego can be expensive, but with the girl's market still being so new I believe Lego is being generous with this pricepoint that still comes with one or more mini-dolls and some really exciting details, such as the hot air balloon shown above (I know, I want that one myself)!

Shown above are all of the Lego Friends sets with a recommended retail price of $14.99. These sets currently range in size from 130 pieces up to 187 pieces. There are not many sets in this category, mainly the girl's car sets as this puts them at a comparable pricepoint as many of the Lego car sets for boys. Every Heartlake City needs at least one of these cars, right?!

Example of a Current $9.99 Lego Friends Set

Shown above are all of the Lego Friends sets with a recommended retail price of $9.99. These sets currently range in size from 62 pieces up to 119 pieces. The smallest Friends sets to generally contain a mini-doll figure, these under-ten-dollar boxed sets make perfect stocking stuffers or gifts from the toothfairy!

Shown above are all of the Lego Friends sets with a recommended retail price between $3.99 and $6.99. These sets currently range in size from 31 pieces up to 65 pieces (mini-dolls generally not included in these smallest sets). These sets are most often sold as "polybags" instead of coming in a box. However, their low price tag makes them a great way to pick-up various animals - a rare Lego commodity outside of the Friends line - as well as a great size for trading with friends.
