LEGO Star Wars 2009

  • Author:
  • Updated date:

2009 was a big year for the LEGO Star Wars Universe. LEGO had successfully launched their new Clone Wars line the previous year and this year they were celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the LEGO Star Wars building sets. After a decade long partnership, LEGO would commemorate this milestone by releasing a large number of promotional items. If your goal is to own all the LEGO Star Wars building sets or minifigures, this year would give you are run for your money.

Ahsoka’s Starfighter & Vulture Droid

Item #: 7751
Affiliation: Clone Wars
Ages: 8-14
Pieces: 291
Minifigures:

  1. Ahsoka Tano
  2. R7-A7
  3. Buzz Droid (2)

This building set is based on Season 1, Episode 19 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In the episode Ahsoka loses most of her squadron, after disobeying Anakin’s orders. It is up to you to decide how badly things turn out for this young Padawan. The Vulture Droid and Jedi Starfighter are both equipped with flick-fire missiles. While Ahsoka Tano’s starfighter has working landing gear, the Vulture Droid rotates it wings, to switch between flying and landing mode. This would be the first time a Vulture Droid was released in blue and the first R7-A7 droid minifigure to be include in a building set.

Anakin’s Y-Wing Starfighter

Item #: 8037
Affiliation: Clone Wars
Ages: 8-14
Pieces: 570
Minifigures:

  1. Anakin Skywalker (Clone Wars)
  2. Ahsoka Tano
  3. R2-D2

The Y-Wing fighter was the workhorse of the Rebel Alliance, but it was first deployed during the Clone Wars. They were used primarily by the Republic as bombers. They carried a huge payload for such a small craft. This would be the third Y-Wing LEGO designed for their regular Star Wars Building Sets, but the first based on the animated Clone Wars. Astromech droids were often used to help pilots control their starships and this building set took advantage of that function. When placed in the droid socket, the R2-D2 minifigure was used to fire the missiles by being tilted backwards. The Y-Wing can seat two minifigures. However, while almost any minifigure can sit in the back bubble-turret, only Anakin and a select few can fit in the pilots cockpit. Despite being the main force of the Republic, Clone Trooper minifigures were too bulky for the seat. I am sure it is just the armor that makes them “look” fat.

Armored Assault Tank (AAT)

Item #: 8018

Affiliation: Clone Wars

Ages: 8-14

Pieces: 807

Minifigures:

  1. Yoda (Clone Wars)
  2. Clone Trooper
  3. Super Battle Droid (3)
  4. Battle Droid (2)

The Armored Assault Tank is a mid-sized repulsor tank used by the Trade Federation and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. A crew of four battle droid would operate this heavily armed vehicle. This set was based on the Clone Wars episode that had Yoda taking on an ATT, not bad for a little guy. However, LEGO got a few of the detail wrong. The box pictures the battle on a different planet and they included regular Clone Trooper minifigures, instead of the ones with red markings. The model’s top hatch can opens, to allow a minifigure to sit in the vehicle. Since this is a tank, it comes with flick-fire missiles and a rotating gun turret capable of moving up and down. The set would be larger than the original ATT released in 2000 and come in the blue Clone Wars color scheme. This set would be the first to include the Clone Wars Yoda and Super Battle Droid with rocket launcher arm minifigures.

Battle of Endor

Item #: 8038
Affiliation: Episode VI
Ages: 9-14
Pieces: 890
Minifigures:

  1. Han Solo (Brown Pants)
  2. Chewbacca
  3. Princess Leia (Endor)
  4. R2-D2
  5. Rebel Endor Commandos (2)
  6. Wicket
  7. Paploo
  8. Chief Chirpa
  9. Scout Trooper (2)
  10. Imperial Trooper

In what would be a crippling blow to the Empire, the Rebel Alliance sent a small strike team to Endor in preparation to destroy the second Death Star. With the help of the Ewoks, they were able to blow up the shield generator protecting the Death Star II. This would be the first time LEGO would create the Shield Bunker and one of the few buildings ever designed for the Star Wars theme. It was detailed to look similar to both the outside and inside of the building seen in the movie. The two sliding blast doors could be opened independently by turning their respective cogs. The exploding armour-plated walls could not be launched off as the description would have you believe, but they can be removed manually to simulate an explosion. The Rebel Endor Commandos would be seen for the first time in this building set. The rest of the vehicles are improved versions of previously released sets from 2002. The AT-ST had movable legs and was given greater detail in its design. The imperial speeder bikes, the Ewok’s firing catapult and glider were also altered for this release.

Assassin Droids Battle Pack

Item #: 8015
Affiliation: Clone Wars
Ages: 7-12
Pieces: 94
Minifigures:

  1. Assassin Droid (3)
  2. Elite Assassin Droid (2)

The building set comes with a basic speeder design. Two Assassin Droids are able to sit in seats facing back to back, with blasters mounted in front of them to take out targets. The speeder was also equipped with flick-fire missiles on its wings. This vehicle does not actually exist in the Star Wars Universe. It was created by LEGO to package the Assassin Droid minifigures and get around Hasbro’s exclusive contract to sell Star Wars action figures. The real feature of this set are the three Assassin Droids and two Elite Assassin Droids. With a grand total of five minifigures, this would be more than the four minifigures usually placed in a Battle Pack. Assassin Droids are emotionless killing machines that have no fear and experience no pain. Their three optic sensors give them a 360 degree field of vision, making it almost impossible to sneak up on or avoid detection. Elite and regular Assassin droids are the same minifigure, except for being different colors. Their bodies are that of the common Battle Droid, but their heads are made of an upside-down cone brick, an orange stud and one more stud matching the color of the droids body. Because these Assassin Droids require more pieces in their assembly than most other minifigures, the Battle Pack contains more pieces than usual.

Clone Walker Battle Pack

Item #: 8014
Affiliation: Clone Wars
Ages: 6-12
Pieces: 72
Minifigures:

  1. Clone Commander
  2. Clone Trooper (2)
  3. Clone Gunner

The walker included in this set was the All Terrain Riot Control Transport or AT-RCT. It was mainly in use during the Darth Krayt’s Galactic Empire and could be seen during the Battle of Kashyyyk. For the LEGO Clone Wars video game, they were available in “Small Air Support” and named AT-RT. They were primarily used in cities and areas of dense population. The walker’s legs have three joints that can be moved up and down. This allowed them to be posed in different walking positions. The walker was also equipped with two flick-fire missiles. As is the case with all Battle Packs, it is the minifigures that are the real selling point. This set would include the first set of black colored ARC minifigures.

Echo Base

Item #: 7749

Affiliation: Episode V

Ages: 7-12

Pieces: 155

Minifigures:

  1. Han Solo (Hoth)
  2. Rebel Hoth Soldier (2)
  3. Snowtrooper (2)
  4. Tauntaun

The Rebel Alliance attempted to set up a more permanent base on the ice planet of Hoth, but were soon discovered by the Empire and forced to flee. Many brave Rebel soldiers gave their lives so that more could escape to fight another day. This would be the second LEGO building set of Echo Base. The first Hoth Rebel Base 7666 had the outside shield doors and gun turret. This set would focus more on the defense perimeter outside the base that attempted to stop the AT-ATs bearing down on their shield generator. The Empire is lacking their big guns in this set, all they have are two Snowtroopers with an E-Web Blaster. The Rebel’s on the other hand are well prepared. The anti-infantry laser battery has an opening door for a minifigure to fit inside and is equipped with two missiles that can be launched simultaneously by pressing a TECHNIC rod in the back. The snowbank trench has a mechanism for the minifigures to stand on that will launch them backwards as if they have been blown up. (The Rebels did lose this battle.) The Hoth soldier minifigures’ goggles were redesigned to more closely resemble the movie and Han Solo would be given a unique design for this set. This would be the first time a LEGO Tauntaun would be included in a LEGO building set.

Corporate Alliance Tank Droid

Item #: 7748

Affiliation: Clone Wars

Ages: 7-12

Pieces: 216

Minifigures:

  1. Clone Jetpack Trooper (2)
  2. Battle Droid (2)

The NR-N99 Persuader-Call Droid Enforcer was nicknamed the Snail Tank, because of its appearance not its speed. This tank could reach speeds of 60 kilometers an hour. However, it was not very maneuverable and was easily flanked. This Corporate Alliance vehicle and its heavy armor were perfect for invasion missions and literally barreling into enemy troops or fortifications. It is a good thing those Clone Troopers have jetpacks to fly out of its way. The main part of this LEGO model was its movable tread. It was comprised of 56 chain pieces, that is almost a quarter of the pieces included in the whole set. This is a tank, so it comes equipped with guns and long flick-fire missiles.

Home One Mon Calimari Star Cruiser

Item #: 7754
Affiliation: Episode V-VI
Ages: 9-14
Pieces: 789
Minifigures:

  1. Admiral Ackbar
  2. Lando Calrissian (General)
  3. Mon Mothma
  4. General Madine
  5. Mon Calimari Officer
  6. A-Wing Pilot

The MC80 Home One Star Cruiser was originally built by the Mon Calamari for civilian use, but during the Galactic Civil War the Rebel Alliance converted them to battleships. Their large size and armament made them ideal for command ships. Home One was the personal flagship of Admiral Ackbar. Although this ships sleek design and immense size is impressive, the building set focuses on three of the rooms found within the ship. The largest area of the model is dedicated to the repair bay. There is a working crane for moving an engine or other heavy parts. The set includes the first Green Squadron A-Wing fighter. The A-Wing is more than a set piece, it has flick-fire missiles and a removable engine. The other half of the set is dedicated to the briefing room and command center. The briefing room has a “hologram” of the Death Star to plan your attack and Admiral Ackbar’s chair spins so you can yell, “It's a trap!” This set would see the first Mon Mothma, General Madine, Mon Calamari Officer and Admiral Ackbar minifigures to be released in a LEGO building set. Although Lando Calrissian and an A-Wing pilot minifigure had been released, this set would feature a new design for them both. This building set would win the 2009 Fan’s Choice Competition.

Count Dooku’s Solar Sailer

Item #: 7752

Affiliation: Clone Wars

Ages: 8-14

Pieces: 385

Minifigures:

  1. Count Dooku
  2. FA-4
  3. MagnaGuard

Count Dooku used a Punworcca 116-class Interstellar Sloop to travel across the galaxy during the Clone Wars. Star Wars fans would first see his personal yacht as he fled Yoda during the First Battle Of Geonosis, in Star Wars: Episode 2-Attack of the Clones. However, this LEGO set was designed after the one featured in the Clone Wars animated show. It had movable wings, two flick-fire missiles and working cargo bay doors. A small speeder was also included in the set and could fit inside the cargo bay. This was a limited edition building set and only available through LEGO.com. LEGO stores and Toys “R” Us. The pilot FA-4 droid minifigure was exclusive to this set.

Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter

Item #: 8017
Affiliation: Episode IV
Ages: 7-12
Pieces: 251
Minifigures:

  1. Darth Vader

Darth Vader flew an experimental TIE Fighter with deflector shields and a hyperdrive. These are important features if you are a Dark Lord, rather than an expendable TIE pilot. This exact fighter was never mass produced by the Empire, because the cost was prohibitive. However, if Vader was in a standard TIE Fighter he never would have survived the Millennium Falcon’s attack at the Battle of Yavin. The LEGO model’s front cockpit allowed a Darth Vader minifigure to sit in the pilots seat. LEGO added several features to this starfighter that were not found on the actual Advanced TIE Fighter from the Star Wars universe. They added flick-fire missiles and the wings could fold. This would be the first building set to include the new Darth Vader minifigure. The minifigure had a lot more detail added to the torso piece.

Hyena Droid Bomber

Item #: 8016
Affiliation: Clone Wars
Ages: 7-12
Pieces: 232
Minifigures:

  1. Rocket Battle Droid (3)

The Hyena-Class Bomber was used by the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars. These droid bombers were capable of carrying four proton bombs, six proton torpedoes and six concussion missiles. They were also equipped with two light laser cannons, which allowed it to fly on missions without an escort or double as a fighter. This building set incorporated the bombers ability to pivot its wings from flying mode to walker mode. It didn’t carry a full ordnance, but it did have four dropping bombs. This would be the first set to include the Rocket Battle Droid minifigure.

Midi-Scale Millennium Falcon

Item #: 7778
Affiliation: Episodes IV-VI
Ages: 8-14
Pieces: 356
Minifigures: N/A

The most famous hunk of junk in the galaxy would be the first LEGO Star Wars vehicle to get a midi-scale building set. These sets are too small for minifigures, but have too many pieces and details to be considered a mini building set. This model of the Millennium Falcon would measures 9.3 inches (23.5cm) long, 6.7 inches (17cm) wide and 3.2 inches (8cm) high. It has rotating guns on the top and bottom, as well as a revolving radar dish. This was a limited edition set celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the LEGO Star Wars line. It was only available in the United States through Walmart stores and Tesco stores in the United Kingdom. Despite being a 10th Anniversary set, it was packaged in a Clone Wars box.

Pirate Tank

Item #: 7753

Affiliation: Clone Wars

Ages: 8-14

Pieces: 372

Minifigures:

  1. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Clone Wars)
  2. Hondo Ohnaka
  3. Turk Falso

The WLO-5 Speeder Tank was also known as the Ubrikkian Tank. This repulsortank’s heavy armor, strong weaponry and easy exits in the middle, for boarding other ship, made it an ideal pirating vessel. The Weequay pirates employed several of these ships in their operation. This vehicle was first seen in Season 1, Episode 12 of Star Wars: Clone Wars cartoon. In the episode Count Dooku was kidnapped by Hondo Ohnaka and his gang of pirates. The box claims this LEGO building set is a “Special Edition”, but that is the only thing that makes it “special”. The model itself is equipped with flick-fire missiles and the driver’s seat can pop up on the top of the vehicle. Repulsor lift technology is not economically feasible to incorporate into a LEGO set, but it does have wheels to roll on the ground.

Affiliation: Clone Wars
Ages: 8-14
Pieces: 636
Minifigures:

  1. Mace Windu (Clone Wars)
  2. Clone Pilot
  3. Clone Trooper

The Nu-Class Shuttle was a fast long-range vehicle used by the Republic during the Clone Wars. The LEGO Republic Attack Shuttle had a lot of interactive features to play with. The roof could be folded up to reveal the inside of the shuttle and had room for three minifigures to sit down. This would be the first set to include the Mace Windu Clone Wars minifigure. The two side wings could be folded up or down. With “Attack” in the name, LEGO had to put a lot of firepower into their design. This model sports a movable gun turret, dropping bombs underneath and eight auto flick-fire missiles. The missiles were able to be launched using a switch that incorporated TECHNIC pieces.

Republic Attack Cruiser

Item #: 20007
Affiliation: Clone Wars
Ages: 8+
Pieces: 84
Minifigures: N/A

The Venator-Class Star Destroyer were large capital ships used by the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars. Their ability to both transport large amounts of personnel and supplies, as well as engage in heavy combat made them a vital part of the Republic fleet. Releasing this vehicle in mini building set form allowed fans to possess these gigantic ships without having to find the shelf space. The model used the flick-fire missile pieces, bud did not come with any missiles. They were simply used for aesthetics and capturing the ships physical design. This set was given to Brickmaster members in 2009 for the months of January and February.
