An AFOL. I love talking about, creating and playing with LEGO bricks.
Today we will be looking at the LEGO Baby Velociraptor playpen set 30382. This set came out in 2018, has 48 pieces and was designed for people 6 to 12.
This set was part of the Jurassic World Theme and ties into the sequel Fallen Kingdom. It was originally a free giveaway with purchases of Jurassic World sets made at the LEGO store or LEGO.com in Europe. It was later available for sale at Walmart.
The baby velociraptor featured is none other than Blue. The set depicts Owen’s narration of him training Blue as a baby. This playful and curious animal becomes a primary character in the second movie and is the main reason for buying this set. A baby animal is always cute, but Blue’s unique coloring made him even more adorable and a great piece for collectors.
The playpen model has some nice subtle details inside. On the left there is a water bowl or fountain for blue to drink from and the right has a bar holding a chicken leg for feeding time. The set also includes a bone that can be used to show just how hungry this growing baby raptor is. Two Jumper plates in the center are a nice place to comfortably place Blue at any angle you wish to display him. I really liked the new plant leaf pieces that LEGO has created near the entrance of the pen. The yellow warning lights on top are a nice touch as well. The bars on two sides of the cage are made from the minifigure telescope pieces. The glass window by the water is a simple transparent blue 1X2 brick.
Overall, the model was lacking any unique build qualities and is a glorified display case for Baby Blue.
While I was not a big fan of the individual polybag, I saw several creations online where people took 2 or three of these sets and combined them to create a bigger enclosure. By making a larger pen that is completely closed off, the set looked more finished and added to the over quality of the product.
