LEGO introduced the Harry Potter theme in 2001. The building sets were based on the Warner Brothers' movie franchise, that brought J.K. Rowling's popular novels to the big screen. Design manager Henrik Saaby used the movies, books and reference material provided by Warner Brothers to help capture the magical world of Harry Potter.
The Harry Potter line is one of the earliest licensed themes produced by LEGO. It would have a long and inconsistent run. The first wave focused on the rooms in the castle and surrounding area. It would soon expand into the larger world of Rowling’s rich mythology. In 2004, the minifigures’ skin tone changed from the standard yellow, to colors that more accurately represented the actors and characters in the story. There would be no sets released in 2006 and only one in 2007. Fans would not see new Harry Potter models until 2010, when the theme was relaunched to coincide with the release of the final films.
Four video games based on Harry Potter were released.
LEGO Creator: Harry Potter came out with the theme’s launch and focused on the locations found within The Philosopher's Stone. This was the third LEGO Creator game, that allowed players to build their own 3D world out of LEGO pieces. The game proved popular enough to create a sequel the following year, LEGO Creator: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4
The Traveler's Tales game was released in 2010 and covered the first four movies/books. The gameplay is very similar to the LEGO Indiana Jones video games. The biggest improvement was having the split screen, that appears in co-op mode, move. The line dividing the screen changes position in relation to where the characters are from each other. This makes finding the other player easier. The two hub worlds for the game are Diagon Alley and Hogwarts. The castle would be the largest area in a LEGO video game yet. To accommodate portable devices limited storage, the Room of Requirement was the only hub world.
LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7
The anticipated sequel to the first LEGO Harry Potter video game was released in 2011. The second game covers the last three books/movies, but The Deathly Hallows is broken into two section, just like the film. As a planned sequel, the gameplay and structure are almost exactly the same as the first installment.

LEGO Harry Potter Movie Posters
I discovered the following LEGO movie posters at http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/Harry_Potter_%28Theme%29 and put them next to the actual movie posters released by Warner Brothers.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Harry Potter's parents died when he was a baby. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, but they never treated him with love or kindness. On Harry's 11th birthday he discovers the truth, his parents were murdered by the evil wizard Voldemort and he himself has magical powers. The half giant Hagrid takes him to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he studies the magical arts. While at school, Harry makes his first true friends and finally feels at home. However, not everything is perfect. Harry, Ron and Hermione discover the Sorcerer's Stone is being stored at the school and Voldemort wants to steal it.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry is about to begin his second year at Hogwarts, when the house elf Dobby warns him he is in mortal peril and must not return. As the only place he ever felt was home, Harry ignores the warning and goes. However, Hogwarts is not the sanctuary it once was. Students are being petrified and the school might shut down. To make things worse, Harry is discovered to speak Parsel-tongue, a rare gift that allows him to talk to snakes. This ability was also possessed by Voldemort and associated with evil. While most of the students ostracizing Harry, he maybe the only one who can save them from the Chamber of Secrets.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Harry accidentally uses magic outside the school and is in fear of being expelled from Hogwarts. However, when the wizarding community finds him, they are overjoyed that he is safe. One of Voldemort’s followers, Sirius Black, escaped from Azkaban prison and wants to kill Harry Potter. Dementors are sent to guard the school, but these dark creatures have a terrible effect on Harry. The line between enemy and friend begins to blur.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
While Harry and his friends are enjoying The Quidditch World Cup Final, Lord Voldemort’s Death Eaters attack. This brazen attack displays the strength Voldemort is once again obtaining. Things turn festive, when it is revealed that Hogwarts will be hosting the The Triwizard Tournament. The event will bring three school together in a magical competition. Despite being too young and a Hogwart’s champion already being selected, Harry is some how chosen as a fourth challenger. Magically bound to compete, Harry has no choice but to accept the dangerous task.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Harry is still struggling with witnessing Cedric die at the hands of Voldemort and is mortified to discover the wizarding world in denial over the Dark Lord’s return. Even the Ministry of Magic will not admit to his return. A small group of witches and wizards have reformed the Order of the Phoenix and vowed to stop Voldemort.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Harry Potter discovers an old Potions textbook that once belonged to the Half Blood Prince. The notes inside help Harry become the top of his sixth year’s Potions class, but also teach him some dangerous spells. Dumbledore gives private lessons to Harry and together they will attempt to find a way to stop Voldemort.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
Voldemort and his followers have risen to power. They control the Ministry and soon the rest of the world. Harry, Ron and Hermione are searching for the Horocruxes, so they can be destroyed and Voldemort stopped. The quest will push them to their limits.
