Skill and Poker
As the world's most popular card game, poker enjoys a significant amount of controversy among critics and experts alike, particularly regarding the question "Is poker a game of skill or a game of chance?" While some believe that it is highly dependent on your understanding of the game, others believe it to be a "try your luck" situation.
Merriam-Webster's dictionary defines a skill as "the ability to use one's knowledge effectively and readily in execution or performance." This definition alone justifies the argument that poker requires skill.
Skill is also expertise in a particular field or your ability to do something well. Like every other game that exists, poker follows a specific set of rules. And to perform well in poker, you need to know its rules like the palm of your hand and execute them flawlessly.
Football is a game with the same regulations worldwide. However, some players and teams like Manchester City or Liverpool perform exceptionally better than others because they have more professional ability, skill, or game strategy. Similarly, some poker players play the game better than others, and that undoubtedly and unmistakably requires skill.
Where Can You Play Poker?
Regardless of your skill level, if you're a poker lover, ensure that you follow your passion in a place where it is accepted to avoid unfortunate situations. For example, certain countries like the UAE, Brunei, and Cambodia categorize poker under land-based gambling, making it illegal to play there.
However, there are licensed casinos in Canada, Bermuda, and several other countries, where you can play poker freely, the traditional way. Otherwise, you could play the game online.
With the right level of skill, you should be able to "kill it" at any of them. Relying on chance, however, will probably be the worst decision you will ever make.
