How I came to trip over my own shoe-laces....

Have a Nice Death had an early access version released on March 8th 2022. Many became aware of Have A Nice Death was at the Video Game Awards through it’s announcement trailer. It was through this trailer that I learned that Have A Nice Death was published by Gear Box. And it was then and there that I became irritated, as a glimpse of research(and by glimpse, I mean scrolling Magic Design Studio’s social media) showed Have a Nice was announced in November 2021, as early access was slated for March 2022.

So the question on my mind was:”why was this not featured on GearBox’s 2021 E3 showcase? So I reached out to Have A Nice Death’s developer Magic Design Studios, asking why Have A Nice Death wasn’t featured at GearBox’s E3 showcase in 2021, and they directed me to their PR at Gear Box. So in contacting PR Deanna Peter, I was directed to the PAX East 2022 showcase, until I asked why Have A Nice Death wasn’t featured during the 2021 E3 conference. It was then that I splattered egg on my face.

See when I originally planned this blog, I was gonna go this irate rant about how Gear Box’s E3’s could’ve been better had we saw the trailer for Have A Nice Death or Hyper Light Breaker. That was until Ms. Peter let me know that Have A Nice Death was in fact was announced December 2021. A whole five months after E3.

This implies that Magic Design Studios didn’t have enough content to show until November, which makes sense given what little they have in early access. I wish I had paid attention to that, otherwise I would not have thought GearBox stiffed us.

Have A Nice Death's gameplay and recent DLC

Have A Nice Death is about a grim reaper who decided to run a business to make reaping souls easier. But the soul reaping spirits he created called “sorrows” became obsessed with reaping the benefits of reaping souls. This left Death and his staff overworked, so in a fit of rage, Death set out to set them straight.

The game plays like a like a plat-former hack n’ slash much like what Ninja Gaiden, Shovel Knight, Dead Cells, and Strider. There are also a variety of weapons and spells you can use in battle. Like spears, kunai, hammers, rocket launchers, and fire arrows. You could pick them up after killing enemies, or buy at Death Inc.’s shop.

And on May 10th 2022 Magic Design Studios premiered their Infrastructure Development update.” Which had all new Thanagers for Death to battle, an expansion to World 5, and a new challenge system. And that was last month in May.

In Conclusion...

In conclusion, I’m glad I looked into this and talked to the right people, before typing an angry rant filled with ignorance. But given that Have A Nice Death is currently “early access,” I’ll be keeping an eye on each update. Have A Nice Death is available in early access on Steam for PC. So if hack n’ slash platforms, and Rouge-like games are your thing, give this one a look.
