Mahatma Gandhi was one of the greatest men the world have seen. He was born in India on 2nd October1869 and worked as a Lawyer in South Africa. There he fought against Britishers for their discrimination against blacks. Later he started a non-violent movement against British rule in India. He involved masses in the freedom movement of India, and inspired many talented people to lead the movement. He was successful in his movement and India got freedom in 1947. He was assassinated by Nathuram Godse, a Madman who hated Gandhi.
His movements inspired freedom fighters of many other countries world over.
A lot of postal stamps were issued by India and also by other major countries on Mahatma Gandhi. Here are some of such postal stamps issued by countries other than India.
US Stamp on Gandhi
US became the second nation to issue postage stamps on Mahatma Gandhi. First Gandhi stamps, which was a set of 4 stamps were issued by India in 1948. In 1961, US Post issued two Gandhi stamps under Champions of Liberty stamps series.
One stamps was of 4 Cents value, the other was of 8 Cents value. They stamps were issued in large quantity, 120 Millions and 40 millions respectively.
Soviet Union Stamp on Gandhi
Former Soviet Union also issued a Postage Stamp on Gandhi. The stamp was issued 1989. The stamps portrays a single color sketch of Mahatma Gandhi. The face value of this stamp was 6 Kon.
Gandhi Stamp by England
Britain ruled India for about 150 years. Mahatma Gandhi lead the movement for getting freedom from British rule. As a result, India got freedom from British rule on 15th August 1947.
On the occasion of Gandhi Birth Centenary in 1969, England issued a beautiful postage stamp on Gandhi.
Gandhi Stamp by Netherland
A Gandhi Stamp by Netherlands. Note that the stamp contains the word 'Bapu', which is his nickname. The stamp with a face value of 0.44 Euros was issued on 2nd October 2009. This was a personalized issue and was printed in very limited quantity.
Gandhi Stamp by Germany
In 1969, on the Birth Centenary of Mahatma Gandhi, Germany issued this stamp. The stamp was issued both with perforation and without perforation.
Gandhi Stamp by Kazakstan
On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's 125 Birth Anniversary, Kazakstan issued two Gandhi stamps in 1995. The two stamps were of same design, but different face value.
Gandhi Stamp by Republic of South Africa
A special postage stamp on Gandhi was issued by Republic of South Africa on the occasion of 50th Anniversary of the Congress Alliance for a democratic South Africa 1947-1997
