2D Sandbox Games Like Terraria

Prefer 2D sandbox games? Try this list of games like Terraria that is full of fun procedurally generated 2D worlds to explore.

As someone who got hooked on Terraria quickly after having spent hundreds of hours on Minecraft I really loved the whole game and spent a lot of time searching for games similar to Terraria. I loved the 2D style of gameplay that it introduced to the sandbox genre as opposed to the more 3D focused games in the same space.

While I found many games like Terraria I had to play through a lot of junk games to get there which did put a sour taste in my mouth at the end of the day. So I hope by putting together a list of great options for other Terraria fans that you won't have to spend as much time as I did searching.

I'd love to collect your vote for Terraria in the poll below and I'm always open to user input in the comment section. Please don't hesitate to comment, I always love to hear from fellow gamers.

Starbound can be summed up in one word, WOW! The game takes a huge amount of inspiration from Terraria and the comparison to games like Terraria is definitely an obvious one. I have played the game for a couple of hundred hours and there are no shortage of reviews on Steam that also have had hundreds of hours (I found one with 700 when the game had only been out for three months!)

Think of Starbound as Terraria except over multiple planets and that basically describes the whole experience. After building up your strength and resources on the first planet you come across you'll have the opportunity to take to the skies and claim other planets in your name. Not all these planets are ready to be terraformed and harvested though with plenty of natural inhabitants laying claim to their home and most won't move without a fight and can even start off very aggressive.

In order to counter this you'll have to be extremity well prepared in Starbound by working towards the best weapons, armours and other pieces of equipment that give you an edge. While I'm portraying a powerful moment in your Starbound adventure it is a long journey to get here just like in Terraria. Starting out with nothing and trying to secure early resources in Starbound is definitely not easy but it is an enjoyable challenge.

After your early resources you'll go through the usual motions to building your first house, upgrading pieces of equipment, becoming more aggressive on resource gathering and eventually getting the rarest minerals. It's at this point that you'll usually make the jump to another planet but there isn't much stopping you from doing this earlier. One feature I like about Starbound in particular is that your spaceship can serve as a hub to teleport to that takes you away from the brutal landscapes below for some peace, giving you an easy way to take a break.

Other mechanics that blow Terraria out of the water is the huge number of bosses, biome variety and even race options to change your experience completely.

Junk Jack X

On my hunt for games like Terraria for my iPhone I stumbled across Junk Jack and fell in love. Sometime after buying Junk Jack the develop came up with Junk Jack X that added lots of new gameplay and I fell in love all over again with it. At it's heart both the games are 2D sandbox games that generate a procedural worlds for you explore both alone and with friends.

If you're here for a 2D sandbox game for your iOS device go and get Junk Jack X right now! Seriously the game is the best in the genre by far and the price tag is easily worth it, if you have an older device you can grab the original Junk Jack for about half the price which is still mostly the same experience although lacks some features in comparison. What Junk Jack X offers over the original is multiplayer, multiple worlds, creative, more equipment and liquids.

The depth of Junk Jack really blew me away for a game that you can play on your phone. The crafting depth is huge, music is crisp, locations varied and the amount of treasures and monsters is borderline insane with hundreds of each.

I'm usually one that stays away from purchasing iOS games but I bought both Junk Jack versions which goes to show how great they are.

Epic Inventor

Epic Inventor brings a free option to this games like Terraria list. It's a slower paced game for sure but once you get into the mid to late portions of this game it really ramps up as you manage all sorts of game elements that give the game a tactical and real time strategy approach.

The start is your standard resource gathering affair as you collect wood, stone and copper to take you from no equipment to better weapons and armour to survive the various game enemies. While these start with simple enemies like snakes and sorts you'll quickly run into more deadly foes.

The best part for me was the robot pet that you get right from the start, he'll either follow you around or you can jump inside him to speed away. I really liked this feature since it means that at the very start of the game you can get around easily, it also gives you an extra extension of yourself to upgrade throughout the game adding more depth.

I'll admit that it took me a while to get into the game because the early parts can be fairly slow but once you get your first workbench out and start really exploring the depth in every feature.

Treasure Adventure Game & World

To make it clear Treasure Adventure Game is a free to play game while the newer released Treasure Adventure World is not. While both games are similar in overall design the World version has many new elements that make it a much better game. This includes improved graphics, a boosted soundtrack, new levels, improved enemies and an even better story.

So what does the game series actually involve in terms of gameplay? Well it's a 2D open world platformer that focuses on the exploration elements. Crafting isn't really present in the game world but you do have the option to upgrade your weapons and sailboat. If you love the exploration elements of Terraria but could do without the crafting and resource gathering elements the series of games is a really good option.

I found exploration and combat to feel very deep and always enjoyable with worlds that are really interesting to get involved in with NPCs, varied locations and much more. Ultimately you're sailing around to recover artefacts to battle an evil demon but it's easy to forget about that aspect as you enjoy what the scenery has to offer.

If this sounds like something that would interest you then you definitely need to get the first game for free and then if the exploration focus of gameplay resonates with you then move onto to Treasure Adventure World.
