10 Epic Games Like Age of War

I love gaming - especially games with a great story - and then sharing my thoughts and experiences of them.

Age of War is one of my all time favorite 2D destructive tower defense games - I used to play in my early 20s an awful lot. It is a simple but addtictive game that has been enjoyed by millions of people all over the world.

So it is pretty understandable if you're looking for similar games to Age of War to try and somewhat re-live that experience. We've racked our brains to compile the list below - check it out:

  • Age of War 2
  • Stick War: Legacy
  • CastleStorm: Complete Edition
  • Clash of Clans
  • Spellbinders
  • Total War Battles: Kingdom
  • The Battle of Polytopia
  • World of Tanks Blitz
  • Rise of Civilizations
  • Iron Throne

1. Age of War 2

A bit of a cheat, since this is the sequel to Age of War, but it definitely deserves a spot on this list - just to be absolutely clear that you have not missed this game out for whatever reason (personally eagerly anticipating an Age of War 3).

As you would expect in this game, you must defend your base against enemy attacks and progress through several different ages, with each age representing a different period in history. However, it just offers a bit more custom aspects than the original did - still very similar game play however.

2. Stick War: Legacy

This is another entry in the popular Stick War series. In this game, you must lead your army to victory against rival nations. You can control each unit individually or give them orders as a group.

There are also a variety of different units to choose from, each with their own strengths and weaknesses - everything from archers to giants! I actually really love this game and I think when you play it - it's much more enjoyable than it first seems. Definitely worth a crack.

3. CastleStorm: Complete Edition

I think this is definitely the game you are looking for and have in mind when trying to find games like Age of War but wanting something a bit more advanced. It is a unique take on medieval warfare.

You must use a ballista to fling an assortment of weapons at enemy towers and spear approaching enemies, while also sending your own troops and unleashing powerful spells.

As I say, there are a lot of similar vibes to Age of War but it is a bit more intense, so if you are looking for a challenging game, this is the one for you.

4. Clash of Clans

This is one of the most popular mobile games ever and for a very good reason. This is one of my go-to's when I am looking to calm down after a long day of work.

In Clash of Clans, you must build up your village and army, raid other villages for resources, and defend your village from enemy attacks.

There is a lot of strategies involved in this game - you have to carefully plan out each upgrade to ensure that your village is well defended. It's not quite the same pace as Age of War - but there is much more in the way of 'economy' and 'development' which I quite like overall.

5. Spellbinders

This is a super unique game that is definitely worth checking out. Visually fantastic to look at - I've included gameplay in the video above to give you an idea. Generally, the idea in Spellbinders, is that you join the war of the Titans as they fight for bragging rights on the summoning battlefield.

You have the ability to choose from a whole range of units and varying Titans, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. So there is the strategic element and that's the whole focus really is on strategy, so if you are looking for a more defensive-style game, this is the one for you.

6. Total War Battles: Kingdom

This is another great strategy game that features medieval warfare. In this game, you must build up your kingdom and army and then do battle with rival kingdoms.

This is definitely a more slow-paced game than some of the others on this list, but it is still a lot of fun. If you are looking for a challenging strategy game, rather than a quick easy to play one as you want to pass a short period of time - this is where you want to be playing.

7. The Battle of Polytopia

This is a turn-based strategy game set in a unique world of tribes. In this game, you must lead your tribe to glory by conquering other tribes. This is definitely one of the more unique games on this list and is definitely worth checking out.

Made particularly popular with Elon Musk tweeting about it - being his favorite game you can play in Tesla cars, this game has been skyrocketing up the charts. When you first check it out - I think it is personally quite a lot to take in - but once you start playing it, you soon start to get the hang of it.

8. World of Tanks Blitz

In this game, you must take command of a tank and do battle against other players from all over the world. There are a variety of different tanks to choose from, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.

You must also make use of strategic cover to protect your tank from enemy fire. A little bit of a differentiating factor from most of the games but it is one that is for those who are looking for a bit more action.

9. Rise of Civilizations

In this game, you must lead your civilization from the Stone Age all the way to the modern era. You must make choices that will affect the future of your civilization and carefully manage resources.

There is also a multiplayer aspect to this game, so you can battle against other players from all over the world. Another one that I think has the unique edge about being to play together, other than Clash of Clans and a few others - this is the most social aspect to the game I think out of the ones above.

10. Iron Throne

This is another great game set in the medieval era. In this game, you must build up your army and battle against rival factions. There are a variety of different units to choose from, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. You must also make use of strategic cover to protect your army from enemy fire.

The Bottom Line

These are just a few of the best games like Age of War that I have played. If you are looking for a great strategy game, then I would highly recommend any of the ones on this list.
