So why is Charizard so expensive?

Most simply put, their rarity. There are three primary levels of rarity in the Pokemon Trading Card Game. Common (like Charmander), uncommon (like Charmeleon), and rare (like Charizard). Outside of these primary rarity levels, there are usually a few ultra-rare and hyper rare cards within each set. Some of which don't even appear on the regular setlist. The distinction of rare Pokemon cards is that they are sometimes only found in every 200 or even 1000 packs. The artwork is often beautiful and over the top. For context, a one thousand pack opening is equivalent to ripping open around 27 booster boxes, so there's a reasonable chance that you'll never find one outside of eBay or your local game store.

While most Charizard cards don't have a rarity on the level of the 1st edition base set Charizard famously worn by Logan Paul before his exhibition boxing match against Floyd Mayweather, most Charizard cards will hold at least some value. Logan Paul ended up going the distance against Floyd Mayweather. Considered by many to be one of the greatest boxers of all time, with neither boxer knocking the other out, Floyd Mayweather made Logan's 1st Edition Charizard base set card the most valuable Pokemon card of all time!

Five Unique Charizard Pokémon Cards

When it comes to Pokemon, there are a variety of different cards you can collect. Here are some of the top Charizard cards that you can find.

Mega Charizard EX 108/106 - Secret Rare

There are many different Mega Charizard cards from the Pokemon XY era of the card game – all displaying a great mix of attacks and artwork. These Charizard cards are massively popular cards to purchase for collectors. This Flash Fire Charizard is likely to retain and increase in value compared to other comparable Charizard cards on this list because the Pokemon Company has never reprinted this set since the original release. When purchasing any Mega Charizard cards or cards like them, the buyer should make sure that they know what the card looks like on the backside, where much of the wear from time will always show. Buyers need to be careful to verify the reputation of the seller to avoid counterfeit products. In PSA 10 graded form, this card has been valued at over $10,000.

Card collecting has always been a sport in and of itself for many. With the Pokémon trading card game being so popular, it's no surprise that collectors would hunt down the rarest cards ever printed to add to their collection in hopes of getting one of the top-tier ones before they are all gone. This Charizard ex card goes for around $6,500 today and would be an extremely rare find considering only around 400 are left in PSA 10 Mint condition in circulation worldwide.

This card is compelling when facing other significant threats. First, this Charizard card allows the player to discard 5 energy cards from their Charizard to deal a whopping (at the time) 200 damage to the enemy Pokemon. So if Charizard ex has three energy cards attached, it can still attack with Slash for 50 damage! Additionally, every energy attached to the Charizard automatically becomes fire energy, making this a straightforward card to stack energy and attack quickly.

Another giant card from the EX and EX Crystal sets, the Combustion Blast Charizard, though still valuable, tends to only be worth around a quarter of its Mega X alternative art form. The Charizard-EX card is available in the Charizard Collector's Box, released initially on November 15th, 2016. This card also comes with a shiny version of itself with different artwork on the reverse side.

In Pokémon Red and Blue, Charizard was the highest evolution of the fire starter Pokemon Charmander. It could be found rarely in the wild atop Mt. Ember on one of its two spaces on Tuesday or Thursday outside of battle and only after returning at least 12 Kanto region Pokémon to Professor Oak during a single walkthrough without saving. The price for this is around $1,000 as well.

Rounding out the list is another card from the EX sets – Charizard EX. This card, much like the others, will likely be a short-timer due to its limited quantity and high value. The Charizard EX Fire Blast card will allow you to put a one-hit KO on any Pokemon in play, either a Basic or Stage 1. This card is handy for taking out powerful Pokemon like Shaymin-EX, Rhydon-EX, and Kyurem-EX. It also helps you maintain your board while KOing your opponent's Pokemon.

This card is great if you need to win right away and can't afford to lose any of your cards from an attack like Victreebel's Ingrain.

The last card in the list is also from one of the most recent sets to be released – the XY set. While it has roughly half the quantity of the previous cards in circulation, you can bet it's worth double thanks to its ability to fit beautifully into any collection and shine brightly. With this card, you have a powerful Fire-Type Pokémon with a unique combo of attacks that will help you battle! Plus, it's easy to shuffle in your deck, so it's ready to go for any play style. Hurry before it comes back in stock! It currently has an estimated $300-$500 value, although that could change as more cards get graded from this set.

Are Charizard Pokémon Cards worth Buying?

Are the Pokémon cards worth buying for collectors? A question most of us have asked ourselves. Indeed, some rare cards are worth the money, but most collectors purchase the packs in congruence with singles, so they're not spending so much on each card. That doesn't mean that every box is a good deal, though! It's best to check around and find out if you can get a better deal online or at your local store before spending any money!

It's always good to see cards you may have collected years ago hit such heights and give a bit of extra value to your collections. If you are looking to trade cards in or want to track down another rare one, make sure that you find a reputable seller who has been in business for some time, so you know that you are getting what's listed.
