Eye Tomfoolery! Some fun optical illusions

My youngest daughter and I love optical illusions. I've collected several that friends have sent us, and thought I'd share here. Hope you get a kick out of them!

Violence or Tenderness?

What do you see in this picture? Some see an angry gesture, others see the most fundamental image of tenderness.

The color test

Can you look at the following words and without reading the individual word instead name aloud the colors used to write each word? It is a little harder than you may think.

Who is he?

Stare at this image for sixty seconds, then look at a blank wall or sheet of paper.

The lovely one

This is an image of something lovely. Can you decide what it is?

The Kanisza Triangle

By looking at this image you may think there are one or more triangles depicted here. But in reality no triangles are present.

The groovy snake lines

Does this configuration appear to be moving? It isn't, it is completely an optical illusion.

The hands

What do you see in this painting? If you see a face you are mistaken. It is only hands.

The Union Jack

Stare at the dot in the center of this Union Jack to the count of sixty then look at a pale surface.

Funny man

He looks like a non-descript cartoon character, right? Keep looking.

Dual profile

How many faces do you see here?

The gears

While staring at the dot inside these circles, bring your face forward and back to see the "movement" of the gears.

The Living Daphne

A friend sent me this photo of a tree. It reminds me so much of the story of Daphne and Apollo, so I call her the Living Daphne. It is a gorgeous illusion of nature, don't you agree?

Painting within a painting

What image do you see in this painting?

The moving orbs

Look at the orbs within the circle. They will appear to grow when you bring your face forward.

The Reading Illusion

Read the following statement:

Research demonstrates that any literate English-speaking person can decipher it with very little effort.
