Do You Need to Play KOTOR 1 Before KOTOR 2?

I love gaming - especially games with a great story - and then sharing my thoughts and experiences of them.

The answer to this question is a resounding no - you don't need to - that said, I think you should.

You do not need to play Knights of the Old Republic 1 before playing 2. In fact, you could start with Knights of the Old Republic 2 and still get a ton out of the game. That being said, if you want to get the most 'complete experience', I recommend that you definitely play the first game.

Why?

The original Knights of the Old Republic is just a great game in its own right. Scoring a 9.5/10 on IGN and still holds great till this day - given it is almost 20 years old - maybe the graphics aren't quite there but the story is. Whereas if you compare that with KOTOR 2 it still scores a high 8.7/10 but it's nott deemed as good.

Personally, I don't quite agree with the ratings on that - KOTOR 2 did slightly edge it for me - and I think that score is just that KOTOR was and still is just such a unique game for its time. However, what I am trying to get across is just how good of a game KOTOR the original actually was - and I still think it is worth not neglecting.

I think what will end up happening is that you go ahead and play KOTOR 2 and realise just how good that game was and then want more KOTOR content so you will go back and play the original. You're still in for an epic time, just you will just get a little more out of it - playing it the right way around.

Knights of the Old Republic

The storyline goes as followed (light spoilers): you're ship-wrecked on an unknown planet and have to figure out a way off. You gradually uncover that there is some sort of Sith presence on the planet which is after you. You meet up with a jedi called Zhar Lestin who helps you out and then everything else snowballs from there.

You find out that you're the key to stopping a war between the republic and the sith - long story short, you have to make a choice at the end of the game which alters the course of the entire story.

The first game is an incredible origin story - and is just really well written - and I think you will enjoy playing it, of course - this is only if you're a massive fan of Star Wars. That certainly does help.

Knights of the Old Republic 2 - The Sith Lords

Whereas the storyline here is that (light spoilers): you're character - The Exile - is a former Jedi who was exiled for breaking the Jedi Code. You start the game on the planet Peragus where you gradually piece together what has happened and then escape. From there you find your way to the planet Dantooine where you start to rebuild the Jedi Order.

You then find out that there is a new Sith lord called Darth Nihilus who is devouring entire planets - and so your ultimate goal becomes to stop him before he destroys everything.

The game again has multiple endings which are determined by the choices you make throughout the game.

Now although this game is a story within its own rights - you willget a lot more out of it if you've played the first game - as there are various references and Easter eggs which relate back to the first game. You gain a bit of context as they naturally build on the previous one

So in short, you don't need to play the first game to understand what is going on - but I would recommend that you do as it just makes for a more complete experience. You will get more out of it and enjoy it a lot more if you have that context.

Conclusion: Do You Need to Play KOTOR 1 Before 2?

No, but I would highly recommend it if you want to get the most out of your experience. Both games are excellent and well worth your time. What's unique to most is that they are just both great stories - not just for Star Wars in general - but actual games.

If you haven't played either before - I would start with the first one and then move on to the second. If you're just interested in one or the other - I would recommend starting with whichever you are most interested in. The first one does provide context for the second though. Either way, I don't think you can go wrong with either game. They are both excellent and I think are well worth your time (trying my best to avoid any major spoilers)!

Either way, you're in for a treat with both. There is also a KOTR comic series too which is worth looking into if you want to know more about the backstory. Once you've played both games that's the next general step I think.

At the end of the day, there's a reason why both these games are considered the Best Star War games of all time. So if you're a fan of the franchise, or just looking for an excellent RPG to sink your teeth into - I would highly recommend giving both Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 a go.

Which order you actually play them in - doesn't really matter - but I think you get a bit more appreciation for the second as you can see how the Obsidian team improved the gameplay from Bioware on the first. Nevertheless, they're both incredible games in their own right and you won't be disappointed with either.

Not only that they are remaking KOTOR 1 with modern graphics, but you can bet your money they'll also release KOTOR 2 in the same fashion. So it's a great time to be a fan of the series!
