Chess the game of the ages

Chess is a game of strategy that is said to have originated in India around 600 AD. Out of all the board games chess is probably the best game to strengthen the mind by teaching you how think logically.

To become a proficient chess player, you often need to think several moves ahead of your opponent. This same strategy can be applied daily to help us with our decision making process. By thinking ahead, and looking at possible outcomes, it allows us to make better decisions throughout our lives.

If you have never played chess, try to find someone to teach you the basic moves, it really is not that difficult. In this age of electronic video games, it's great to see a time honored traditional game like chess still being played in many circles and cultures around the world.

While playing against the computer can be entertaining, it still does not have the same feel nor is it quite as much fun as playing chess on a real chess board with quality pieces against a human opponent.

Chess Board Sizing

When purchasing a chess board one of the most common questions people ask is "what is the correct size chess board to get for my chess pieces." With the prices of nice quality carved wooden chess pieces starting anywhere from $150 for a basic Staunton Ebony and Boxwood chess sets, to upwards of $2000 for an Alexander's Staunton Stallion in Red Sandalwood and Boxwood, sizing your pieces to fit the board is very important. You want the chess pieces and the chess board to look great together and compliment each other.

While sizing is not only critical when ordering a new chess board for tournament play, it looks best when the chess pieces fit the board properly. The American Chess Federation, the governing body for chess in the USA specifies that the King should measure anywhere from 3 3/8" to 4 1/2" with a base diameter of 40-50% of the height. The King should be easily placed on a square without any edge touching. Standard boards typically have squares that are 2-2 1/2 inches.

Another method of determining a nice balanced appearance is called the Pawn test. Place four Pawns together so they form a square with their bases. This square should be about the same size of a square on your chess board. If you do not have the chess board yet, draw the squares on a piece of paper with a ruler to the size chess board squares you think you will need, this will give you a good visual indication of how the chess pieces will fit on the board.

One final thing to consider when choosing a chess board, is how the color of your chess pieces look on your chess board. They should contrast nicely and compliment each other. Which ever chess board ever you decide on, be aware that many chess boards tend to be large and it is best to have a sturdy table to place the board. Equally important, is someplace to store it when not in use.

A great storage tip that I have used, is to put a flat picture hanging hook on the back of the chess board and hang it on the wall like a piece of art. I have also seen very nice wooden chess boards that fold in half, this will give you more storage possibilities and not take up as much room. There are also some chess boards that have built in felt lined storage in the base for the chess pieces to protect and secure them as well.
