How I Got Hooked

If you haven't come across this addictive gem from PopCap Games, enjoy your spare time while you still have some left. Because once the bug bites, it won't be long before you understand how this game has captured the fixation of so many rabid fans.

For me it all started with an innocent "Hey, have you seen this game?" one Memorial Day weekend. Soon, I was fighting off the undead hordes seeking to cross my yard and feast on my brains.

Choosing between such entertaining plants as Peashooters, (yes, they really shoot peas!) Cherry Bombs, and Chompers (picture Seymour's plant from Little Shop of Horrors) to set up my "tower defense," I'm fighting off the zombie army in Tetris fashion, almost as much as a desire to chuckle when an undead King of Pop dances across my screen in a hilarious rendition of Thriller!

At every level there are entertaining bits to keep you smiling and occasionally break out laughing, even as the increasing harder levels get your heart pumping, wondering what fiendish peril is right around the corner. As you get more and more of the 40 varieties of plants to choose from, each level also introduces you to a new member of the 25 zombie species. Don't worry an Almanac will help you keep these straight. Click Here to See a List.

Soon, you can't wait to see what wicked delight awaits you at the next level. Before you know it, that sucking sound is the echo of hours as they fly by!

What Diabolical Mastermind Came Up with This

It's easy to see how George Fan took his Warcraft roots from Blizzard Entertainment to plant the seeds of destruction in this hilarious plot. He told Wired magazine how he "wanted to do a defense-oriented game, but [he] thought that towers were too static.. [with] no personality.." adding, "You can give plants tons of personality, but you don’t expect them to move."

Further, Fan told Game Gazebo, "when I set out to create Plants vs. Zombies, I made sure it struck the right balance for me thematically. Yes, you have these cutesy plants, but the existence of zombies prevents it from being too sugary. Yes, it's a PopCap game with zombies, but they're goofy, cartoony zombies so it's all good."

"More than that, however," Fan added. "I think it's the gameplay that really strikes a balance between the casual and the hardcore. I'm big on strategy in games, so I made sure to include a heaping spoonful of it in this one. So there you have the hardcore side of the game. On the other hand, I despise games that make you go through walls of tutorial text to teach complex game mechanics, so I tried to keep it extra simple in the beginning of the game. And that's the casual side for ya."

Teaching his girlfriend, Laura Shigihara, who composed the music for the game, how to play the Magic: The Gathering card game inspired Fan to use seed packets for selecting plants to grow. Drawing from another wildly successful franchise certainly didn't seem to hurt.

What Really Makes This Game Addictive as Crack

When you get right down to it, what makes a game truly addictive is the satisfaction of leveling up. "it's all about the upgrades," as my brother puts it. Plants vs. Zombies is certainly no exception.

With 50 levels of play in Adventure Mode, 20 mini-games and an endless Survival Mode there is plenty to keep even the hardcore gamer entertained for hours and hours. Combined with elements of quirky humor as well as plenty of amusing twists and surprises, Plants vs. Zombies is addictive as crack. Ok, I better go, the zombies.. they're coming for my brains!

My husband was so addicted to this game that I'm afraid to play it! The information on the making of Plants vs. Zombies was interesting. My hubby is hoping for a sequel.

I totally agree with you, Plants vs Zombies is by far the most addicting game I've found haha I've had it since Christmas and have already beaten it about 6 times in one profile, twice in another, and just started another. My Tree of Knowledge is 185 feet tall in my main profile and I have about 100,000 coins plus all of the mini games beaten, a streak of 23 in vase breakers, and a streak of 13 in I,Zombie. I also have all but one of the achievements unlocked. You wouldn't happen to know what the golden sunflower achievement is would you?

Nice.

Yes, save yourself! Run! It's too late for me!

billyaustindillon on June 23, 2010:

Plants vs. Zombies sounds too dangerous to play - my wife doesn't need me with another addiction - hubpages is bad enough! Thanks for a great write up - it was fun and informative.
