Buying M. Pena's Windstone Edition Dragons

What Are Windstone Edition Dragons?

The Windstone Edition dragons are ceramic fantasy figurines, and are very heavy, and before you do decide to buy a Windstone dragon—or any Windstone edition product make sure that they will be placed in a spot that supports their weight. Some of them are also very tall, the Emperor Dragon stands over 18 inches high, so make certain you have the space. M Pena designs them as colour collections, and because of this, the windstone dragons are prized by many collectors, but again, since they are heavy it is best to be careful. They are also fragile and some people report them breaking in transit.

On a more personal note, windstone dragons were my first dragons in my ever growing dragon collection. The thing I love about this particular dragon collection is that they lend an elegance to my collection, (along with m. pena I also have Tudor mint and myth and magic dragons in my collection) and they are often the first ones which receive very positive comments from guests at my home. They do almost look life-like, and the peacock dragons are some of the most beautiful.

If you are looking for dragon in terms of spending money, these are also a bit more higher priced, however they will, with simple care last a lifetime for a collector.

Melody Pena, more commonly known to the collector's community as M. Pena is the designer of these dragons, and the other collections of unicorns, wizards, vampire bats and Ki Rins has been working with these dragons for many years, and it is possible to find some figurines older then 20 years since they were created. Because of this, there have been many retired dragons, in terms of the color and not the actual dragon figurine, but are still on sale-- you can find and purchase them on eBay or smaller stores.

The windstone dragons are a great addition to any collector's set, and they require very little care, simply wipe down with a dry cloth once a week to maintain them. It is important to note that the cloth must be dry and not damp to preserve the paint and the coating. I had the experience where someone use a damp cloth on my small sized dragon, only for the colour to fade shortly after.

If you are packing them for a move do be very careful to make sure that they do not move in transit in the boxes, as they can and will break. It is best to keep the original boxes, as they are sized correctly and use the original packing as well. If you can't, it is important not to use foam chips or smaller packing supplies.

Where Should I buy My Windstone Edition Figurines?

One of the better sites to go to and buy windstone dragons is eBay, however there are a few important facts to note before you buy there. I have found that if you learn about this before hand and are willing to ask for this it will save you both time and money.

The other site is the main website of M. Pena, who is the creator of these figurines and has them showcased along with many of her other products. However, if you don't have the chance to buy directly from her, be sure to ask and follow these points:

1) It will cost you more in shipping if you want your dragons to arrive in great condition, so it is best not to try to get the cheapest shipping, but rather find out exactly before you bid how much it will cost to have your seller send your new dragon to you in a good proper full padding in the box. It doesn't hurt to message them and ask them what the shipping costs will be and what they will use for packing. One seller offered to pack them in bubble wrap, but this is easily broken by both the size and the shape of some of the dragons. A good package is one in which the dragon is wrapped and then put in cardboard, or its original cardboard box and warpings.

2) Most of the m pena dragon colors are retired, so if the dragon is in excellent condition, you will need to see more photos, and when in doubt, ask for photos that are not too professional- with a picture of a mantel or desk. The best photos you need to see are the ones which have a background of a home behind them, since this means there is less of a chance they have been photoshopped. The more money you spend the more important it is to know how much money you are spending to buy and then have the figurine be damaged.

3) eBay is still eBay and sometimes there is such a thing as a bidding war, so always have an upper limit you will want to spend on your dragon. Most sellers have collections and sometimes it is worth a good hard look to see if they have other windstone dragons they are selling. Money is important, and do a bit of research into the prices before you spend a lot of money. If you find a dragon at a more inexpensive price than others, don't automatically "buy now" or bid, this is an auction and you will tarnish your reputation if you do this and then don't want the dragon.

4) Windstone dragons can also be termed as statuette dragons, since some of them are taller than most dragon collectables, the Emperor dragon for example, is over 12 inches in height. If you do purchase this, this can lead to higher shipping costs due to both height and weight. If you have paid less than that knowing that your dragon is overweight or large, you will find that the dragon might come damaged.

The most important thing of all is to know what you are getting and how much money you are willing to spend, and then buy and enjoy it.

They are all listed on the m pena website, and with each colour there are the same number of dragons, which I believe is around 20.

Michelle- generally speaking with Windstone dragons- the most valuable is a complete collection- emperor dragons cost the most, but are harder to find- they are that big!

Michelle on December 18, 2017:

What is the most valuable of all the dragons? I'm not referring to retired ones- but the ones that you can still find around various cities.

You provide good tips on packaging and eBay transactions that some people may not consider.

These are cool. I like that they are pretty colorful. The details on them are amazing. You are right about being careful and doing your own research when buying on ebay.
