Benefits of Toy Collecting

Mamerto Adan is an engineer by profession, but a writer by night. He loves toys and knives. He also has a martial arts background.

Once grown men got laughed at when they collect toys. I mean people say come on, toys are for kids and you are too old for that kind of stuffs! And you heard all sorts of comments like grow up pal, you’re a retard, what a waste of cash and so on. It’s a joke for many as it is a different or strange hobby. But as time goes on we hear less and less of such mindless feedback as the world got to know more about toy collecting. What we thought as a joke is not a joke at all and it might give an unexpected advantage in later life. You might be a geek (like me), a weirdo, a nerd, or simply a fanatic who scan the mall for the latest action figure, but who knows that the passion with toys is now helping men grow up even more.

Why people collect toys

Before we move on, people have a lot of reasons why they fill their display cabinets with miniatures and figures. Some do it as a refreshing hobby, others as a fascination. In my case I’m a fan of anime and mechanical stuff, and I love to see robots on my desk! And being a writer, toy collection sometimes give me an idea on what to write. A scene in my short story, where giant suits of armors with wings duel around a floating castle actually formed in my mind as I view my Gundam collection. Then there is childhood nostalgia. People love to recall the joy of being a kid, and nothing reminds us of such memories like our favorite toys. But for some people it is just the joy of playing around with cool stuffs, nothing more and nothing less.

It teaches you how to take care of you stuffs

Like many collectors around, toy enthusiasts wants to see their prized action figures looking brand new always. I mean I see collectors boasting rare playthings in a mint condition, even though they are decades old! Collectors have their own way of maintaining their toys, but simply shutting them in a dust free cabinet should be enough. Old toys in good condition fetch a high price in the market, yet like me I just want my stuff to look good as they age.

And later in life, collectors extend their care to their other possessions as well.

Toy ownership basically disciplined collectors into caring for their stuffs, and I know a lot if collectors who cared for their other belongings as much as their plaything. A friend of mine who collect die cast vehicles would regularly maintain his trainers and gadgets meticulously. Model kit builders will frown at a sight of a messy table. In my case thanks to toy collecting, I develop this make it look good sort of attitude. If something can be maintained, so be it. This might explained my laptop still works fine while smartphones will last for years.

It makes you more organized

When you have a large inventory of action figures, die-casts, robots and miniatures, you want it to look pleasing to the eye when in their display cabinet. When not in display you want to store it neatly in a secured area, usually in separate containers like a plastic chest. A jumbled collection stuffed in the cabinet will make your toys look like junks and not treasures, while dumping your stuffs in whatever places you can find is a good way of losing your possessions. What’s more, a sloppy display or storage of toys will cause damages or missing pieces. In my case I don’t display my toys as there are children inside our house, but I do dedicate a certain area in our room for storage. I use plastic chests for toy safekeeping, and I find my toys neatly stacked inside the chest pleasing to the eye. So pleasing that I applied the same storage method to my other possessions; books, pens, and even my knives have their own areas in my room now. For me a jumbled possession is a grievous sin. Other people I knew who are in to toy collections are organized people themselves as what their clean office table show.

It stimulates creativity

I mentioned before that some scenes in my fictions are born out of my toy collection. Thinking about how bizarre creatures will look like is hard work at times. Thank goodness for movies, Japanese animes, video games and nature shows for helping me come up with monsters for my stories. Yet the quickest way to find inspirations is by simply scanning the mall for toys, or looking at my toy collections. Right now I’m saving my money for a particularly detailed Predator action figure, which inspired the army of stealthy half demons in my work. And floating castles in my short stories are the products of my Lego tinkering.

Develops budgeting skills

Yes, toys could cost a fortune. You pay what you get, which means that mobile, detailed and realistic figures and vehicles might cost a lot. My Gundam collections don’t come cheap. One decent kit could cost more than fifty dollars. I never purchased toys more expensive than a hundred dollars, but at times collectors like me could have issues with budgeting. We have basic necessities that deserved more places in our pay checks than the rarest action figures in the mall. The challenge here is to acquire the toy you always wanted without getting broke. So I monitored my savings, eliminate some unnecessary spending and kept a small amount which grew to small fortune overtime.

And without knowing it, I learned how to manage my pay checks!

Relives stress

This is a no brainer as this is what hobbies supposed to do. A rough day in the office will be miles away after I exercised, relax and look at my Gundam collections. I’m now in my own world, and did my boss shouted at me last morning? How come I don’t remember! And I would never forget how my stress migraine went away by simply building a Gundam model kit.

It distracts me from alcohol, smokes and other toxic vices

Perhaps the best reason to go into toy collection. Being dedicated my life to my Gundams, I simply have to no time to hit the pub and get drunk. And why should I smoke or do drugs if my die-casts are keeping me happy? I also knew a married friend who got into toy collection to cure his womanizing. Ladies you got to hear this!

Thanks for stopping by Alexis. In our case even my office-mates are fond of toys! That is why we don't display action figures on our desk, or else someone will take it home :)

Great article! While I don't collect toys myself (though I have a few of favorite characters), several of my friends are very into toy collecting.

Thanks Tamara! And someday I planned to teach my kids to pursue hobbies too :)

I like to collect dolls! I also adore Fire Engines, and Minature Convenience Stores! I just need to look for a place in which to display all of my collected items. This is the only dilemma.

I have a big container filled with lots of Legos, and am hoping to give them to a new home when I find one.

Interesting and fascinating article!

Thanks FlourishAnyway! That one also surprised me when I first heard it. Right now my friend is happy with his wife, his children and his toys, now that those meddling extra martial relationships are out of the way.

I like your list of all the reasons to pursue this hobby. That last example was a surprise!

Thanks for the comment Breelyn! And not only that I collect toys, I also play video games sometimes.
