Necron Battle Cruisers

The Necron Battle Cruiser category is a lonely one, just like the Cruiser and Battlehips of the same faction, having only a single, very expensive choice to choose form. The Scythe Reaper is essentially a larger, slightly slower but much better armed and armored (hull points wise) variant of the smaller Scythe Harvester, with a little more freedom in the form of overlapping firing arcs as well.

The boarding damage is pretty good for all the other benefits the Necrons get, but they are indirectly hampered by the simple fact that having so few ships in a fleet doesn't give them access to that many between reloads, especially if you start needing them to repopulate ships of yours than have been hulked, as is one of the current strategies used against Necrons.

Without utilizing some really high point totals, a standard sized, 1,200 point fleet can never field more than 3 of these mighty expensive vessels and if you do, you won't have much else to bring to the fight. Used properly however, a trio of these ships can be utterly devastating to most enemies.

Update: The release of Patch 3 brought along the addition of 4 new Necron ships, including the new Battle Cruiser, the Scythe Ruiner, which you can find added to the guide below.

Terms Used

This section briefly covers the advanced weapon data you will find for each ship. These values are calculated based off the base weapons stats and are explained as follows:

DPS - Damage Per Second - The total damage output per weapon type (all guns combined) per second, assuming 100% of shots land, before considering armor penalties.

Crits Pm - Critical Hits Per Minute - Assuming all shots land, this will be the average number of critical hit's the guns will cause every minute before modifiers. (all guns combined)

Salvos PM - Salvos Per Minute - The total number of combined waves of fire, not including multiple rounds fired from the same weapon.

Rounds PM - The actual number of shots or individual projectiles fired each minute from all guns combined.

Necron Battle Cruiser Stats

The Scythe Reaper like its other larger brethren, stands alone in it's class. Taking an additional 400 hit points over the Harvester Cruiser, adding some turret defense and troop damage, does a fair bit to justify the point increase and increase the survive-ability of the vessel.

Necron Battle Cruiser Attributes & Skills

The Scythe Reaper takes with it the same load out of skills and abilities that its little cousin the Harvester Cruiser does. Most of these tie in to the regenerative abilities of the Necrons, all line ship's ability to deploy The Necron's special Interceptors or their considerable troop strength.

  • Necron Propulsion: Gives access to Inertialess Drive and Burn Retros
  • Reactive Hull: Immune to Fire. Yellow criticals heal after 30 seconds. Every 30 seconds, the ship repairs 1 turret.
  • Hull Cauterization: Heals 1 hull point every second while reducing max hp by 1 every second as well. Resets after battle.
  • Iron Will: Provides the +50 bravery bonus
  • Necron Portals: Gives 270 degree wide boarding action and +1 troop damage to lightning strike (counted in stats)
  • Good Troop Efficiency: Deals 2 troop damage per assault action.
  • Surgical Strike: 60% chance to deal +1 troop damage per assault action applied.
  • Doom Scythe: Launches a squadron of interceptors that can also deal hull damage to ships.

For a 68 point premium over the Harvester Cruiser, The Scythe Reaper Battle Cruiser packs in an extra 25% damage over the Harvester, along with comparable stat boosts to it's hull and (slightly less to) defenses. This is a significant uptick in points cost, so it might be still worth toying around with how taking Harvesters over the Reaper might be of benefit to you as far as making room for an extra ship somewhere.

If you do decide to stick with the Reaper you will find yourself doing considerable damage at range with a nice wide arc for all your weapons to fire together within. Unfortunately taking more than one will eat up more than half your fleet point total and 3 means not enough room for even one light cruiser, forced to split the total left between a pair of escorts.

The Reaper takes a loss of engine speed from the smaller Harvester, however at 200, it is still comparable to some of the Imperial light cruisers and escorts.

*I am currently under the belief that the arc affects which targets can be hit with the Dispersed Lightning ability active, which if this is true, means the Lightning Arc turrets are highly preferable over their battery variants. If you have additional info to help confirm this, please post in the comments below.

The Scythe Ruiner is the new Battle Cruiser added to the Necron fleet with the release of Patch 3, which brought 4 new ships total to help expand the options available to players.

With the Ruiner, you get a slight trade in weaponry, dropping some of the Lightning weapons and losing the overlapping front facing arcs, to double the amount of shield-piercing Gauss weaponry brought into the field. Notably, this gives the Ruiner the largest number of Gauss weapons of all the Necron ships, even beating the Cairns 3 turrets, making the Ruiner your best and most economical way of stacking those weapons.
