Adeptus Mechanicus Escort Destroyers

The Destroyers, along with the Frigate varieties of the Adeptus Mechanicus are all copies of the same class vessels available to the Imperial Navy and Adeptus Astartes, but slightly cheaper with slightly worse stats overall, mostly when it comes to bravery, making the Adeptus Mechanicus destroyers and frigates more susceptible to boarding actions.

Because of the fact they essentially get the Escorts of both the other associated factions, the Mechanicus fleets have the greatest versatility among their Frigates and Destroyers with a cheap points cost to really pack in the numbers.

Shared Stats

As mentioned above, the Adeptus Mechanicus Destroyers are just carbon copy counterparts of their Space Marine/Imperial Navy variants, depending on the hull in question, made cheaper by shaving off beneficial stats such as defense troops, armor and losing the assault action in the Hunter's case, and a bravery penalty making enemy assault actions more effective.

Shared Attributes & Special Skills

All of the Adeptus Mechanicus destroyers share the same skills without exception, all also carrying the Scanner ability as is common among Escort sized vessels.

  • Plasma Reactor: Gives access Mechanicus maneuvers.
  • Independent: -25 to bravery penalty.
  • Escort: This ship does not have access to assault skills.
  • Scanner: Marks enemy ships in 13,000 units and keeps them revealed and targetable for 30 seconds.

A really poor copy of the original, the Mechanicus Cobra shaves off only a mere 2 points from its Imperial Navy variant, but loses half its potential torpedo wise by only coming with the basic charges, then takes a further hit by losing 1 defensive troop per stage (down to 9 total from 12) and tops it off with that bravery penalty which makes assault actions hit harder.

Unless you really want to save the 3 points, just take a Mechanicus Hunter instead of a Cobra as it's barely more expensive but comes with faster engines and better armor.

Cobra Widowmaker: Weapons

The Mechanicus Widowmaker, like the Mechanicus Cobra, is just a couple points cheaper than its vastly superior Imperial Navy counterpart, but still has some use in a fleet given it's special identification range bonus. Losing the melta torpedoes is an even bigger hit to the Widowmaker without any real guns to provide at least some damage, though usually a Widowmaker, regardless of faction, isn't going to see much combat optimally.

Since even though they have boarding actions, their weakness to the same behooves them to use assaults more as a backup than primary offense, this gives the Mechanicus heavier reliance on long range standoffs. This in turn actually makes having a long range spotter craft more worthwhile, even if it is practically unarmed. Lastly the Mechanicus does not have any other ships that poses the special ability, unlike the Imperial Navy which has a couple spotter capable Battleships.

The Hunter is the "useful Cobra" for the Adeptus Mechanicus. Barely more expensive, the extra armor and speed the Hunter brings from its Adeptus Astartes variant (though not nearly as high armor) makes it a much more practical choice in the long run.

Something more interesting with the Space Marine copies of the escort ships for the Mechanicus is they actually are more handy to have as options considering dropping the heavy armor and boarding torpedoes actually does a much better job of shaving cost off the escorts, unlike the Imperial Navy based variants, plus even with the loss of a lot of their bonuses, they tend to outperform their Imperial based counterparts.
