Way Out West Barbie, Pin-Up Girls Collection

Did you know Mattel wanted to sell more Barbie clothing than dolls? That's why her proportions were so wild—the clothes make her look human!

This is part one of a three-part series on the Barbie Pin-Up Girls Collection. Part two is about Hula Honey Barbie.

About the West Out West Barbie Doll

Designed by Anna Choi, Way Out West Barbie is the first doll in a series of three Pin-Up Girls Collection dolls. The collection features all-American looks like the ones that may have graced the walls of our GIs during wartime -- think sultry and charming, but fresh-faced.

The release date of this doll was 3/2/2006, and it's proudly a Gold Label Barbie, meaning that no more than 25,000 were created worldwide. In fact, Way Out West Barbie had no more than 11,000 units produced worldwide.

Her Way Out West Stance

Way Out West Barbie stands with her left leg slightly bent, her heel resting atop a pile of "hay" (natural tone raffia shavings glued to a cardboard box) and wrapped with "twine" (dark brown raffia, twisted to resemble cord).

With her right hand on her hip and her left propping up her hat, she is the quintessential picture of western charm.

A high half-pony adds to this Barbie's appeal.

Way Out West Barbie's Hair and Makeup

This doll features shoulder-length auburn curls. Her hair has been done in a high half-ponytail with two brazen curls permanently trained on the right side of her face, and the rest flowing bouncing freely about her shoulders.

Her impeccable eye makeup has been done with three colors of eyeliner on the top of her eye: turquoise, dark brown, and silver; on the bottom, medium brown alone suffices. Her eye shadow features two tones of brown and a pale wash of white under her high-arched chola-style brows. Those brows are painted in two tones... the curve of the brow itself in the brown color used also as eye shadow, but individual strands are also painted on in a darker brown.

Her lashes are painted on as well, in the darker brown of the eyeliner. The tiniest drop of red in the inner corners of her eyes assures us that her designers took a great deal of care in making sure her eye makeup would "pop".

Barbie's lipstick is a dark brick red and painted in a full, wide smile that turns up at the edges. Bright white teeth accentuate the lips. Her lips are painted more darkly in the center of her pout than the rest of her smile, but with a high sheen on them... which only adds to their appeal. She has the palest wash of pink on the apples of her cheeks, where the faintest hint of a dimple graces us.

Way Out West Barbie's Clothes

She wears dark blue denim cuffed shorts with contrasting yellow stitching and a brown sueded belt wrapped several times around her, slung low with an oval silver belt buckle adorning her narrow waist.

A red, black, and white plaid short-sleeved starched shirt with white buttons is tucked into her shorts. (The buttons are purely decorative; the shirt closes with snaps). Atop this ensemble she wears a fuzzy light brown fringed vest printed with silver western motifs, and darker brown fringed cuffs on her forearms, decorated with more silver designs.

On her feet are bright red soft plastic cowboy boots with yellow painted designs on them. They also feature one orange heart and an orange daisy on the front of each calf. The boots have brown soles and sensible cowgirl-height heels.

Around her neck is a red neckerchief with a white lasso design. And speaking of lassos, this beauty is ready to wrangle with several lengths of light brown hemp-like material at her hip.

The box is printed to bring to mind a bluish western sky with what appears to be reddish mountains in the background.

Unfortunately, I've never been out west personally, but I'm no stranger to photographs of beautiful landscapes! This is what I imagine Arizona to be like. There is also a fence post with another lasso wrapped around it, presumably for securing the herd. Sandy tones are used for the ground cover.

Behind the first level of the box is nestled a black doll stand, as well as the card detailing when this beauty was made and her certificate of authenticity.

She is so beautiful, I love her hair. I think she reminds me of young Lucille Ball in her pin-up girl years. :)

Thanks a lot, flashmakeit! I plan to do a lot of these Barbie hubs in the next few months - I've collected my whole life, and I'd love to share the details.

Thanks, Brainy Bunny! I enjoy taking photos, especially of such a worthy subject (and especially when such subjects don't move!)
