There is one rule in nature, "survival of the fittest".
Those who are able to adapt and grow stronger will prosper while those who can't perish. This is the driving theme of the world of the Steam survival sandbox game "Ark: Survival Evolved". Players are "abandoned" on a picturesque tropical beach, with swaying palm trees, white sand, and crystal clear waters. However, after a minute or two to gain their bearings, they will soon realize they are not there for a vacation and that they are definitely not alone.
Survive against mother nature and the fearsome beasts roaming the land.
Creatures long-extinct litter the island, ranging from the massive triceratops and brontosaurus to the minuscule dodo. The player will not only have to survive against mother nature but also these fearsome beasts roaming the land. Most are passive, ignoring players if undisturbed, but there are some that may take offense to a new neighbor and will attack on sight.
Arriving naked and unarmed, the player will have a difficult time from the start.
They must find and collect resources by hand, avoiding the dangerous natives, and craft primitive tools to keep themselves alive. They will have to scour their surroundings for food and craft their own structures for safety. This beginning will consist of constant trial and error and will not be without death. Wandering too close to a predator, not eating enough food, or even, adapting to the climate will end a player's life rather quickly. Luckily, players will be able to respawn and collect their belongings as long as they are able to return to their previous body.
The start to any new adventure is rough and this one is no different.
Ark: Survival Evolved will test the player in new ways, challenging their patience and hardening their resolve. But once the final wall is built on their first island home, players will feel rewarded and accomplished for all the time and effort invested. We will look into more of these adventures and experiences in later articles.
