A Combination of Tomato Pie Recipes

Yummy! I took the Tomato Pie Recipes from three friends and combined "this" from one and "that" from another. The Tomato Pie sure was good and easy to make! Thank you to my friends for sharing their recipes and helpful hints. I needed all the help I could get! I have included these "Helpful Hints for making your Tomato Pie" below the recipe.

I was first introduced to Tomato Pie about 12 years ago so I am really not sure how long the recipe has been around. When I first created this page, it was actually my first time to make it but I had eaten it many times before.

Here is the Tomato Pie Recipe as I made it and I hope you enjoy it as much as we do! Let me know how you make Tomato Pie. Since I first created this page, I have made this Tomato Pie Recipe numerous times and it never fails to be delicious!

The good thing about this Tomato Pie Recipe is that you can get creative and add other ingredients, too. I usually make two at a time and share one with a friend (and then wished that I had kept it for myself).

Tomato Pie Recipe

This Tomato Pie Recipe is a combination of several Tomato Pie recipes that my friends shared. I hope you enjoy. Be creative and share with me your own version in the guestbook below. Thanks

Ingredients for Tomato Pie

  • 4 diced tomatoes
  • 1 deep dish pie crust - 9 inch
  • 1 cup finely chopped onion (You might want to saute the onions first)
  • 1 pkg of Good Seasons Italian Dressing Mix
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • 1 cup mayonaise
  • 1 cup grated cheese (I use Sharp Cheddar)


  1. Follow the directions for pre-baking pie crust. Pierce with fork on sides and bottom before baking.
  2. Dice Tomatoes and place on cookie sheet and sprinkle with salt. Allow to sit for a few minutes and then rinse and pat dry. This will keep the pie from being too runny.
  3. Layer 1/2 of diced tomatoes in pie crust and top with 1/2 of diced onions and sprinkle with 1/3 Italian Dressing Mix. Note: We only use 1/2 the pkg of Seasoning Mix just because we don't like it as strong
  4. .Repeat.
  5. Combine the remaining Dressing Mix with Mayo and grated cheese for the icing and spread over the top..
  6. Bake at 350 degrees until cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Now you have your recipe, let's get the ingredients together

This Tomato Pie Recipe can be varied so don't be afraid to get creative!

Ingredients for Tomato Pie for your shopping list:

  • 3 or 4 ripe tomatoes diced
  • 1 - 9 in pie shell (of course, you can make your own pie crust if you want to)
  • 1 c finely diced onion or 2 green onions chopped,
  • 1 pkg of Good Seasons Italian Dressing Mix or a mixture of your favorite fresh herbs.

Note: Most of the time I just use 1/2 pkg,Salt and Pepper,1 c mayonnaise,1 c grated cheddar cheese. I must say that I like my Tomato Pie better than most I have tasted in restaurants.

Almost Ready for the Oven!

This one will be ready for the oven soon.  Not yet, though.  You have to add what I call "the icing"!

Next, you will need to prepare your tomatoes and onions for your Tomato Pie

3 tomatoes if they are large, 4 if they are smaller

While your pie crust is pre-baking,do the following:I always peel my tomatoes before dicing but this is a personal preference. I have never tried this Tomato Pie Recipe with canned tomatoes but may have to do that this winter. I think it would be great with the canned seasoned diced tomatoes. I know that many people don't peel their tomatoes but we do.Spread your diced tomatoes on a baking sheet,salt and let sit for several minutes.Then rinse and pat dry with a paper towel.

Note: This helpful hint was on my friend's recipe that she got from Grits and Groceries Restaurant Website

Layer 1/2 of the tomatoes topped with1/2 of the onions (some people like to sauté their onions first) and sprinkle with1/3 of the Italian Dressing Mix, Add another layer with the remaining tomatoes and onions and sprinkle that with 1/3 of the dressing mix.One of my friends likes to add extra Oregano,Basil, and other spices.

Now for the Icing of your Tomato Pie

Spread this topping all over the top of the pie, add salt and pepper

Ice with the mixture of grated cheese,mayonnaise and remaining dressing mix.I have found that Sharp Cheddar is betterfor cooking than Extra Sharp.The Extra Sharp seems to get grainy. My sister made it using the shredded 3 cheese pkg and said it was very good. That's a good thing about this recipe. You can be creative.

Mine was still a little runny but still tasted great. My hubby said, "That's right tasty!" You can see a section of the done pie looks a little different. That is because I cut it before it was completely done. I just had to go ahead and eat the cut portion! Sorry about that! I guess the saying "Patience is a Virtue, is true!"

"Hi Nancy Thanks for the link to the tomato pie recipe. We have lots of tomatoes and that was a perfect recipe to use some, plus I had never tried a tomato pie. I did not have a pkg of the Italian dressing mix, so I used fresh basil,thyme and rosemary from my herb garden. I also watched the video from your link(cooking up a story) and used the caramelized onion idea to top the pie. That made it very tasty. I then just top the onions off with mozzarella. I've only had tomato pie once in my life and I loved it. I had it at a restaurant called Our House (now closed) in my hometown of Selma, Alabama. The dish was included in the Alabama Tourism Bureau's list of 100 Places to Eat in Alabama before you Die. Actually, I've not heard of tomato pie again until I discovered your lens. I'll have to get my sister-in-law (the best cook in our family) to make me one from your recipe. Your photos make my mouth water. All the best.
