Tia Maria Coffee: A delicious treat
This is a family treat that we tend to reserve for special occasions. My mum started this family tradition by serving it at about eleven o'clock every Christmas morning. It is totally delicious and would serve as 'a hair of the dog' if perchance we'd over-indulged the previous night - which invariably, we had.
I haven't given the exact quantities here because it depends how much you are making. The amount of liqueur you use is up to you too. A teaspoon of Tia Maria creates a flavorful coffee without adding much alcohol but a shot makes a drink that's a lot more boozy with quite a kick.
The choice is yours. (Experimenting can be fun).
It's very quick to make and adds a lovely festive air to the day. It's also delightful as an after-dinner drink too. Tia Maria is our liqueur of choice. It's made using coffee beans so it's the natural choice. But experimentation with other liqueurs is, of course, to be encouraged!
Note: Tia Maria is a vegan-approved product and although I haven't tried it, a vegan cream substitute would certainly give the flavor needed but I can't speak for its floating abilities. If you require a version for children or designated drivers, choose flavored coffee. Scroll down to see more.
All you need to make this delicious drink
- Tia Maria liqueur
- Cream - we use single but a double cream would be doubly good
- 1 pot freshly brewed coffee
- Brown sugar (optional)
- You can also add a little flavour and colour to the top of the cream by adding one of these - crumbled chocolate flakes, cinnamon, grated nutmeg or good quality cocoa powder
How to proceed
- Brew a pot of wonderful fresh coffee and line up your glasses on the countertop
- Warm the glasses. The way I do this is by pouring hot water into them, leaving them for a minute of two and then pouring the water away.
- Add a tot of Tia Maria to each glass (the amount is up to you!) My mum used to add a little brown sugar too.
- Fill each glass (to about three-quarters full) with hot coffee.Stir well with a teaspoon to mix the coffee and the liqueur
- Take the teaspoon and hold it over the glass. Turn it so that the bottom of the spoon is uppermost. Rest the bowl on the inner edge of the glass, above the coffee.
- Gently, gently, gently pour the cream over the upended spoon until the glass is almost full. It will float on top of the coffee.
- Repeat with the other glasses and serve.
This Tia Maria is so very similar to Irish coffee - with which you are probably familiar.
It's so easy to make andthe only slightly tricky part is pouring the cream over the back of the teaspoon so that it floats on top of the coffee rather than sinking into it.

As you saw in the video above, this drink is similar to Irish coffee - infact, it's made in the same way.
Once you discover the joy of liqueur you might be tempted to experiment with other liqueurs. This is a great idea.
- Drambuie - float a slice of orange on the top as a decorative flourish
- Bailey's Irish Cream - serve with a delicious milk chocolate or two on the side
- Brandy is delicious served this way
- Amaretto is wonderful - serve with biscotti
- Rum is excellent - sprinkle the cream with a little grated nutmeg

Tia Maria is great in coffee. Our traditional Christmas morning drink is Baileys in coffee or straight up.
