Make no apologies for using canned biscuits. They have gotten better in taste and texture over the years. And they are still an economical purchase.

Using your imagination and a few extra ingredients you probably have right at home, you can make up a buffet of appetizers or even a full meal using them.

Every Sunday the early birds at church are treated to sausage biscuits... the cooking biscuits and frying sausage are intoxicating.

Give some of these biscuit treats a try....

Since I first posted this Hub, so many more recipes have appeared using this shortcut...canned biscuits are so versatile and for families whose lives are busy, busy..they are a welcome go-to way to feed families.

The photo here is of a recipe that I saw on Facebook. I needed a quick dish to take to a buffet at church so decided to give this a try. It is inexpensive, quick, and tasty.

You need canned biscuits, your favorite jar of marinara, meatballs, cheddar and mozarella cheese.

Cut biscuits into fourths and place in the bottom of a greased 8 x 8 pan. Top with a layer of marinara and add meatballs (four rows of four meatballs works nicely). Top with cheese. Bake at 375 about 20 to 25 minutes till cheese has melted.

Of course you can double this recipe with no problem.

A Light, Tasty Any-time Dessert

You need to use the 'junior' size canned biscuits for this dessert.

Place biscuits on baking sheet. Drizzle with butter.

Sprinkle coarse sugar on top of each.

Bake as usual.

Let cool for a bit. Slice in half.

Top with your favorite fresh or frozen fruit.


Add a dollop of whipped cream if desired.

A biscuit in a can

Canned biscuits offer a quick alternative to making biscuits from scratch. These are especially nice if you have a hectic schedule but wish to serve hot, appealing dishes.

Let me be the first to tell you that if I were choosing biscuits I would choose to make my Mother's recipe. They are tender and flavor filled and so light I must hold them on the plate.

There are times though when a biscuit is in order and I just don't have the time to make them. When that happens, canned biscuits do work. They are versatile and with little effort a table can be filled with appetizers

One thing I know about them is they are best hot. So if you choose to make any of these, serve them HOT.


Magic in the kitchen

My Momma left a little bit of the magic of how to make biscuits with me as mine are in the same ball park with hers. They are not exactly right but they are enough like them to connect me to those meals when she served them to us years ago.


I can still see the poof of flour as she flipped the dough onto her fabric cloth that she cut them out on each time. I even use the same stainless steel bowl that she used to mix them in; that must be where the magic is.

Newest member of the family: Mini biscuits

  • Open biscuits and remove from container.
  • Roll biscuit to plump it up a bit
  • Using a bottle top ( or very small cutter of some sort) that has been dipped in melted unsalted butter mixed with 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt , cut two mini biscuits from the fluffed Momma biscuit
  • Place on cookie sheet.
  • You should be able to get about 48 from a can of biscuits. If you wish to use a larger lid that is fine.
  • With these tiny ones, bake at 400 degrees for about 7 minutes.
  • Remove promptly from the baking sheet and top with a dab of reserved butter and garlic salt mixture.

Biscuit and sausage links

Use crescent roll--and link sausages.

  • Cook link sausages, drain on paper towel, and let cool.
  • Roll one link in each crescent roll.
  • Place on baking tray.
  • Cook according to package.
  • Serve immediately.

Biscuits with butter, jam,gravey, honey, or just plain

The easiest way to serve them is, of course, to pop open a can, place them on a baking sheet, and bake them. When they are done, slather some butter (or some healthier butter-like alternative) on top and eat.

When they are fresh out of the oven, a little butter or margarine is all of the dressing they need.

However, honey, jelly, jam...any of those are great too.

Toasted Cheese Biscuits

A fried biscuit

  • Pour 1/2 cup canola oil in a frying pan. Heat to medium heat.
  • Remove biscuits from the can.
  • Flatten each of them. Place two or three in the skillet.
  • Cook till golden brown, flip, and repeat on side 2.
  • Remove to a dish covered with paper towel. Serve with a meal as you would sliced bread.
  • You can salt lightly if desired.
  • Toss in cinnamon and sugar
  • Or, sprinkle with confectioner's sugar

Use left over biscuits, pop in your favorite cooked sausage....another quick easy breakfast

Egg biscuit, toasted cheese biscuit, sliders

  • Egg biscuit: Easy, quick, and yummy: Cut cooked biscuits in half. Top with fried egg. Ham, sausage, bacon, or cheese may also be added.
  • Toasted cheese biscuit: Cut cooked biscuits in half. Top with sliced or grated cheese. Toast.
  • Sliders: Cut cooked biscuits in half. Top with cheese, onion, lettuce, tomato, any of your favorite toppings.


Bizza

This is a cross between a biscuit and a pizza....bizza.

  • Cut baked biscuits in half.
  • Top with pizza sauce, lightly browned ground beef, and pizza cheese.
  • .Broil till cheese is melted.

Easy and quick:

  • Bake biscuit of choice
  • Slice
  • Pop in a sausage patty which has been cooked and drained on paper towel.

A little donut

Heat oil in skillet.

  • Flatten uncooked biscuits.
  • Cut a hole out of the center.
  • Cook in oil till golden on both sides.
  • Cook donut holes as well.
  • Shake in a brown paper sack with cinnamon and sugar or sprinkle with confectioner's sugar.

Pot pie

  • Use left over pork, beef, or chicken.
  • Make a gravy using chicken or beef broth, flour, milk, and season to taste.
  • Add left over veggies or frozen veggies.
  • Mix well.
  • Place in Pyrex dish for a large casserole or serving size dishes.
  • Top with biscuits.
  • Bake until the biscuits are done.

Quick, easy cobbler

  • Place a can of cherry, apple, peach, or blueberry pie filling in a baking dish.
  • Top with biscuits which have been flattened a bit.
  • Lightly brush melted butter on biscuits.
  • Sprinkle with sugar.
  • Bake according to biscuit directions till they are done.

Breadsticks

  • Divide uncooked biscuits in half.
  • Roll out till about 8 inches long. They will shrink some when baking.
  • Bake at 400 degrees about 7 or 8 minutes.
  • Brush with butter when cooked. Sprinkle with garlic salt.

Monkey bread

  • For monkey bread, you need 4 cans of biscuits.
  • Cut biscuits into fourths. Dip in butter and cinnamon sugar. Stack on top of each other making a little mountain. You can also bake them in an angel food pan or a bundt cake pan.
  • Slather butter and cinnamon sugar over all before baking.
  • Bake at 375 for 45-50 minutes.

Unlimited possibilities

These are only a few suggestions. There are so many other ways to serve these little biscuits. Using your imagination and you will quickly add to the ways to serve this convenience food.

What a lot of great ideas! I think I'm going to try the fried biscuits. My mother used to make fried bread from bread dough she made from scratch. They were so delicious just with butter on them.

Several of these different ways of preparing the biscuits so that no one can tell they're out of a can look really yummy and easy and quick (my favorite kind of food).

The little pizzas would make great snacks for a party. Excellent ideas and they look so easy!
