The Best Ever M&M Cookies Recipe

Brenda loves a sweet treat. If she's going to have dessert, she wants it to be a yummy homemade one like the one from this recipe!

These M&M Cookies Are My ABSOLUTE Favorite Cookies

Are you looking for the best-ever M&M cookies recipe? Well search no more! On this page, you will find what I consider the only recipe for M&M cookies because why would you mess with perfection once you've found it?

This, the original recipe from M&Ms, is perfect and can be adapted to suit different holidays simply by buying the appropriately colored M&M candies. In my home, we've enjoyed Christmas, Easter, Valentine's Day and plain-old-everyday M&M cookies and loved them all, whatever the color.

In a sense they are about the absolute worst cookie I make...because when they are here, I just cannot leave them alone!

50 Cookies

  • 1 cup of soft butter (it is critical that it be soft)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 cups regular all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 12 -ounce package of M&Ms (see my secret in the box near the end of the page)
  • 3/4 c chopped nuts (optional see my note in the instructions)

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and the sugars until light and fluffy. It is critical that the butter be at room temperature in order to make this step work nicely.
  3. Beat in the egg and the vanilla.
  4. In another bowl, mix together flour, baking soda and salt.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix.
  6. The recipe says to STIR in M&Ms and nuts at this point. I always put the M&Ms right in the mixer. I suppose a couple might get broken but if they are it hasn't caused any serious issues and doing it this way is easy and fast. My boys have never taken nuts to school because of children with allergies and, as a result, have gotten used to their cookies without them. Therefore, we always skip the nuts. That's a matter of personal choice.
  7. Using teaspoons, drop cookies of about one heaping teaspoon onto your cookie sheets, making them about two inches apart. My cookie sheets need to be greased. Be aware that making these cookies too big causes them to spread out and become flat.
  8. Bake for between 10 and 13 minutes. I prefer mine cooked less rather than more. Another personal choice but don't overcook them.
  9. Cool on wire cookie racks.
  10. Enjoy!

I am sorry for those of you for whom this recipe did not work. I have made them regularly for many, many years and others have made them successfully, too. They are our favorite cookie recipe and, as always, they were highly successful just yesterday.

Unfortunately, I cannot determine why your version of this recipe did not work out. Follow the recipe carefully, try not to over beat the butter and to keep your cookies small. We do find that making them bigger makes them flatter, which is the problem I hear about the most and I think if they are too soft, they would be more likely to spread.

Sounds yummy. I would like to give this a try.

Stefani on October 20, 2019:

Delicious! Used full sized candy and chocolate chips instead of nuts. Baked 12 Minutes, called a couple minutes on baking sheet and then on cooking rack. A keeper recipe!

Emmie on June 23, 2019:

I’ve made these cookies more times than I can count. I have the recipe memorized at this point. They’ve been to many parties and group events and people always love them! In my experience it’s always 11minutes bake time—take them out as soon as the edges are golden!

Marko Dinitrov on January 06, 2019:

A delicious recipe! We made cookies, our children ate before we cleaned the kitchen :)

Diane on December 23, 2018:

I’ve been using this recipe of yours for 4 years. We add mini chocolate chips instead of nuts and it is flawless every time! How many does yours make? I think I get about 30 or so cookies usually.

Rain Phoenix on December 17, 2018:

It looks quite delicious.

Yummy, yummy

Kelly on December 07, 2018:

I thought these were really good! My family prefers a soft slightly chewy cookie and these were just that! It’s a keeper

Doris on April 10, 2018:

Are they supposed to be soft after baking? I’m making some for my class but it’s my first time making them. Asking to be safe.

Shizette on February 14, 2018:

Kristen Howe from Northeast Ohio on February 14, 2018:

Those cookies look deliciously good. Yummy! I would love to give them a try real soon. Thanks for sharing this recipe.

Maria J. ANDRES on December 29, 2017:

OMG! At first I was not sure about the recipe. The original had more sugars and everything else. I went on a limb here and tried it anyway. Perfect cookie. Not to soft not to hard. Just perfect and without the added sugars. Thank you for sharing.

Abdul Haadi from Lahore, Pakistan. on November 27, 2017:

One of my favourite recipes!

Sonya on October 19, 2017:

These were very good!! Nice light buttery taste. Not too salty. I was looking at some other m&m cookie recipes and was not excited that they called for more salt than this one. A recommendation I read somewhere else was to put the dough in the refrigerator for about 5 minutes before baking and to put them on the cooling rack & not let them cool off on the cookie sheet. Doing these things would help to keep the cookies from flattening out so much.

Stepjanie on October 05, 2017:

Try this recipe with the girls they came out good

@ReshimiTheKitty: Bet your mom's cookies were good, too!

PeggieL on February 14, 2014:

Another way to take care of the "spreading out too much" problem is to use shortening, or half shortening/half butter. Cookies make with all butter will ALWAYS spread more than ones made with shortening.

mothering4Him on February 13, 2014:

This may be silly, but I read your comment about not putting nuts in your cookies in case another student (with allergies) in your children's class got a hold of one, and I was just so touched! Thank you for making my day by showing such compassion to others and sharing with us (and teaching your sweet children to love others)! :) God bless!

Mmm. . . That's the same exact way my mom and I used to make them, except they were flatter

Treasures By Brenda (author) from Canada on October 13, 2013:

@quadria-molden: Thanks so much for your visits and your feedback. That's exactly the way they go in my house -- out of the oven ** POOF ** gone. Pecans sound like an interesting addition.

Mobley5 on October 01, 2013:

Great recipe. These are delicious!

quadria-molden on September 23, 2013:

I was looking for a good recipe for M&M cookies and came across this one. In my own words they are BANGING!!! I even added some chopped pecans to them and as quick as I can get them out of the oven they are gone. Thank you soo much for this recipe. I stored it in my database of recipes.

@anonymous: Thanks for the feedback, Monique. We all appreciate it. I was just wondering what Pumpkin Spice M&Ms would be like in them...

anonymous on September 15, 2013:

I have made this recipe before and the cookies are delicious. My one suggestion for those of you getting flat cookies is to refrigerate the dough for at least one hour before baking. I am making them today with Reese's Pieces!

Kimberly Schimmel from Greensboro, NC on May 24, 2013:

You are right about smaller cookies turning out better. I find that to be true in general. It's hard to make really big cookies properly.

Mirrie from France on May 23, 2013:

I have never had M&M biscuits (cookies) - but I will definitely give this ago

DebMartin on May 07, 2013:

anonymous on March 27, 2013:

I just made these - some as teaspoonfuls and some as tablespoonfuls. Neither of them spread out at all and remained nice and plump. I'm not sure what problems the other bakers had, maybe their butter was too soft at the beginning?

anonymous on March 10, 2013:

yum cookies

Treasures By Brenda (author) from Canada on March 04, 2013:

@anonymous: Thank you very much for your comments, Cindy. I will experiment with the greasing of the cookie sheets the next time I make these.

anonymous on March 03, 2013:

Cindy I just made these cookies. They turned out beautiful thank you sooooo much !!! Ps they were so easy.

anonymous on March 03, 2013:

Thank you for the yummy cookie recipe. I wounder if people put in too many m&ms if that makes a difference how their cookies turned out wrong . Maybe they greased their cookie sheets, I didn't. My cookies turned out beautiful. I was gonna put all of my 19 ozs of m&m in my cookies and my husband said she said only 12 ozs ! Their perfect thank you !!!!

Carpenter76 on March 02, 2013:

I love m&m's. At mac Donalds we have Mc Flurry icecream with m&m's that's so nice. Don't know if they serve that abroad?

anonymous on February 28, 2013:

@anonymous: The key to all cookie recipes (unless sugar cookies) I think is this, never use all butter or all margarine I always use 1 of each and let it soften by sitting at room temp, otherwise they get flat....

Alessandro Zamboni from Italy on February 26, 2013:

This is a fabulous recipe for M&M's lovers! I will give your lens web address to a dear friend who can't live without them! Double thumbs up!

Treasures By Brenda (author) from Canada on February 25, 2013:

@anonymous: I'm sorry they didn't turn out, Jennifer and wish I could help! I know you said you followed the instructions exactly but just in case, the two things that I think would affect the taste would be if you did not use brown sugar and if you forgot the vanilla. Everytime we make these M&M cookies now, we try to understand where people could go wrong.

LocalImpact on February 24, 2013:

Thanks for the great recipe. I am going to have to try this one.

anonymous on February 22, 2013:

I made these cookies today and I followed the specs exactly as stated. My cookies looked fine, but the taste was not there. They tasted too buttery and not very sweet. I'm not sure what I did wrong for so many people to say they tasted great. My whole family did not like them. Sorry.

victoria91 lm on February 19, 2013:

What a great lens.

anonymous on February 12, 2013:

@anonymous: The exact thing happened to me! I just made them and I've been watching them like a hawk. Around 7 min they were completely done and the thinnest things ever. I don't knon what went wrong.. I was so excited :(

@anonymous: I'm sorry that they did not work out for you.
