To make a great apple pie, or any pie for that matter, you have to have a great pie crust. After you try this pie crust recipe you'll never use any other, I promise you. This is truly a "no-fail" pie crust recipe.
There is probably no dessert that says "American" as apple pie. Years ago, about 1956, a neighbor gave me a "no-fail" recipe to make pie crust, and since apples were usually plentiful, I started making apple pies.
In this article I am going to share with you the "no-fail" pie crust recipe and also my vintage recipe for making apple pies.
I have to admit that if you are watching your weight, you'll want to make sure there are others around to help you eat it. You don't want to be left alone with this pie or you might find yourself eating the whole thing. And since it tastes extra great with ice cream or whipped topping, you'll want to have that around to serve with your homemade apple pie.
The best and easiest pie crust you'll ever make.
- 3 cups flour
- 1 cup shortening--I like to use butter flavored Crisco
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 egg---slightly beaten
- 1 teas. Vinegar
- 5-6 Tablespoons water
- Mix flour and salt. Cut into the shortening.Mix the beaten egg, vinegar and 5 tablespoons water. Add to the flour mixture and stir with a fork until mixed together and form into four balls. Cover and place in refrigerator for about 30 minutes. This makes the dough easier to handle.

Homemade Apple Pie - makes one pie
- 5 to 7 tart apples
- 3/4 to 1 cup sugar
- 2 Tablespoons flour
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg-- very important
- Peel, core and slice the apples. Mix the sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Place a layer of apples over the bottom of the piecrust, sprinkle a few tablespoons of the sugar mixture over the layer, add more apple slices and sugar mixture until all the apple slices and sugar mixture are used. Top with 2 Tablespoons butter or oleo, cut into pats. Top with second pastry crust. Bake @ 450 degrees for 10 minutes. Then reduce heat to 350 degrees for 40 minutes.

After rolling out the top crust. cut slits to allow steam to escape. Place top pie pastry over apples. Brush milk over the crust and sprinkle with sugar. Bake @ 450 degrees for 10 minutes. Then reduce heat to 350 degrees for 40 minutes.
A beautiful and tasty pie to serve to your family or friends.

I want to say thanks for this delicious pie crust and filling recipe. I made it Saturday night and no-kidding... the pie crust is the best I've ever made. It's flaky and light... my family LOVED it! This apple pie recipe is a keeper! :)

Never made one myself, just like to eat them. Warm with a scoop of vanila icecream on the side. Delicious! :)

Many many times. And this is the pie crust recipe I use too. It's awesome - good for anything. We made it for some British friends (in a chicken pie recipe) and they loved it. Isn't it fun to get the "best" recipe and then never think of it again? SquidAngel blessings to you~
