My mom's side of the family came to Canada from Romania in the early 1900s and this recipe for Sugar Balls has been handed down from mother to daughter for the past century over the span of five generations. This was the holiday cookie I looked forward to the most all year long.
This year, I passed on the tradition to my almost teen daughter and we had a lot of fun making these super easy no-bake cookies (and popping a few in our mouths) and packaging them up for gifts to give to our friends when we visited their houses during the holidays.
These chocolate sugar balls have a subtle tangy orange flavor that is delicious and highly addictive. Once you start eating these, it is hard to stop! They require no oven to make which is great for letting your kids help out, even the very little ones. Ever since I was a wee toddler, I had the job of rolling the balls in the sugar.

Makes 3 dozen
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/3 cup Tang orange juice (prepared)
- 1/2 cup icing sugar
- 2 1/4 cups graham cracker crumbs
- 1/4 white granulated sugar
Use A Small Scoop To Make The Job Of Rolling The Balls So Much Easier
- Simmer a small amount of water in the bottom of a double boiler and gradually melt the chocolate chips.
- Remove from the heat and add the tang orange juice and stir until combined.
- Add the icing sugar and graham cracker crumbs and stir until thoroughly mixed.
- Let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to allow the mixture to harden a bit. It makes the mixture easier to work with.
- Pour the granulated sugar in a small bowl.
- Scoop out a tablespoon of dough at a time and roll into a little balls. I find it helpful to coat my hands with a little bit of butter before I begin rolling the balls. It keeps the mixture from sticking to your hands.
- Roll the balls in the sugar until completely coated and place on a cookie sheet lined with a piece of waxed paper.
- Place in the fridge for 30 minutes to completely set.
- Place in airtight decorative tins or containers.
- They can be kept on the counter, in the fridge or the freezer.

My kids and I began making my recipe for Painted Christmas Cookies when they were just little, and now they've passed it on to their kids and grandkids. I have to just guess where the recipe came from, and I'm thinking from my Aunt Lelia, because she was always the cookie maker in our family. I really don't remember when I first began making them, except back in the young years of my marriage. My kids got a great creative, fun kick out of using new artists brushes to paint the cookies before baking. I like your cookie recipe, and will definitely try it.
