Why on Earth would anyone order a hamburger "plain?" Just what exactly is PLAIN? Plain is just the burger and the bun. No veggies or condiments. Just plain. Why do this? There's many reasons why....let's explore some.
A really good burger should not need extra things to taste great
A really good burger shouldn't need the help of veggies and special sauces to taste great. The actual meat itself should be perfectly seared and seasoned so that it's juicy and has a flavor all it's own. When you get other ingredients in there, it makes it a big 'ole mess that's definitely not welcomed by burger purists.
Should cheese be allowed on burgers?
In short, YES, cheese IS ALLOWED. But ONLY ONE type of cheese. Stick with this rule, and you'll be a happy camper. Please, though don't go the route of putting cheese INSIDE of the the burger patty itself. Yes, it's cool when you bite it and when it oozes out, but it's just tacky. Please stay away from the Juicy Lucy phenomenon.
The only reason to not get cheese in your burger is if you are allergic to cheese or lactose intolerant. They both are bad and not worth the extra nirvana you get when eating cheese.
Bacon should be the only item that you put in your burger
If you're putting cheese in your burger, by all means do it, no one is stopping you. But if there is one item that is your friend when pairing it with your burger, it's BACON. Yes folks, bacon! Why? Because bacon brings out the flavor and sets off the burger patty. It enhances the already good burger you do have (if you are eating a great burger, that is!).
Leave condiments out of your burger, they are unhealthy!
Ketchup, mustard, mayo, BBQ sauce are ALL unhealthy as an addition to the burger. Do yourself a favor and skip these. I can already hear the complaining, "but the burger will be dry!" Not necessarily. A truly well seasoned and cooked burger will be absolutely juicy when you take a bite from it. You don't need added sauce. Sauce just covers the taste. Why cover up the taste of a truly great burger?
If you often put the trifecta of condiments (ketchup, mayo and mustard) in your burger, you're guilty of a crime.
Never put Ketchup in your burger
Besides ketchup being heavily laden with sugar and sodium, both that are bad for you in copius amounts, ketchup detracts from the taste of the burger. What are you trying to hide? Kethchup just masks the taste and should ONLY be put in an inferior burger. Never a gourmet burger.
Never put barbecue sauce in your burger....unless....
If it's an actual western or barbecue burger, then you should add barbecue sauce to enhance and match the theme. But never in a regular burger. If you go the western route, the only items in your burger should be the following:
1. The BURGER itself
2. Bacon (look at why, above)
3. Onion Rings. Preferable to have only 1 large ring or 2 medium sized ones will be best.
4. Cheese (cheddar). You could, of course omit cheese and the taste will not be detracted from the burger.
That's it. Don't put anything else.
Never put mayonnaise in your burger
Mayonnaise should have NEVER been allowed to be spread in a burger. This is a darn shame. Mayo, besides being fattening, has no place in improving the taste of a burger. It's best to be put on salads and in salad sandwiches. NOT burgers.
Never put mustard in your burger
Here is another mistake. Putting mustard on your burger is ruining it. It's not a hot dog! Mustard is a strong condiment. It has no place in the burger. If you need to put mustard to flavor your burger, you're definitely doing it wrong.
A truly great burger is plain and not a pretender
I hate it when people compare the "taste" of a Whopper from Burger King to the like of McDonald's Big Mac. Or they compare the Jumbo Jack from Jack in the Box to the Quarter pounder at McDonald's. Please stop. These burgers are basically the same thing, but with a bundle of variations that detract from the overall flavor a burger purist is looking for.
The next time you decide to grab a burger form a fast food restaurant, order it plain.

I think if your a "burger purest" a fast food burger really is not a good choice either cause they are not juicy, flavorful or good for you either because of all the preservatives they add to the buns and the burger. (30 year old burger in a guys pocket, and it still looks the same as it did when it was first made? ) To tell ya the truth, with out anything on those burgers, your just having something without any flavor at all LOL.

Another thought Alecia. When you order a burger from a fast food restaurant ninety percent of the time they are already made up and sitting on a grill somewhere. Ordering it plain gets you a a special order which means a freshly cooked burger!

Good points but if I wanted plain meat I don't think it would be a burger to me. I don't eat cheese on my burgers for the most part but I do eat lettuce, onion, pickles and condiments. And even though it may be fattening, but I figure I'm not eating a burger to improve my health. Nice job.

Hmm, you raise some interesting points, however your way of having a burger goes completely against the way I was raised to eat a burger. Nevertheless I enjoyed the hub!
