hot dogs are red, violets are blue...
I was having my usual grocery shopping yesterday and was in the meat and food section, looking for my favorite sausages and hotdogs, and noticed eighty percent of them were red, so I questioned myself why are hotdogs red? Is there an amazing explanation why the heck that famous food always made red? I couldn’t keep that question bugging me so I researched. Hmm you better read on.
Color of hot dogs…why they’re always red
Just imagine if you’ve been served a jumbo hot dog sandwich sauced with yummy ketchup, mustard and your fave mayo, garnished with tomato, onion, relish, lettuce, bacon and all those that you like, sprinkled with lots of cheese…but your hot dog is blue, not red nor orange-ish…would you still be craving for it?
I want hotdogs with mallows in sticks at camp. What if hot dogs are pink or green or purple…holly molly, where’s the hot dog and where’s the mallow?
Hot dogs are red because they must be. The mashed product often has a grey/white color and by dying them red they appear to look more like meat. Often the hot dog casing is dyed red for the same reason. Hot dogs are red because if not, they won’t look like edible at all.
One more thing is that red (hot dog) is perfect paired for yellow (cheese). It is reasonable enough to attract the appetite.
Why are they called hot dogs?
Why are hot dogs called hot dogs? Is it because sausage makers use dog meat? No way! Of course that’s too literal. What’s behind these hot sausages from the steamer and griller? There is really a reasonable explanation with how that name was derived. Hot dog, whatever the name is, would always be one of the most loved foods in the world. Below is the history about why we call hot dogs hot dogs today.
History of Hot dogs
Hot dog name origin - In 1902 during a Giants baseball game, Harry M. Stevens sent his salesmen out to buy up all the dachshund sausages they could find, and an equal number of rolls. In less than an hour, his vendors were hawking hot dogs from portable hot water tanks while yelling, "They're red hot! Get your dachshund sausages while they're red hot!" In the press box, sports cartoonist, T.A. (Tad) Dorgan, was nearing his deadline and desperate for an idea. Hearing the vendors, he hastily drew a cartoon of barking dachshund sausages nestled warmly in rolls. Not sure how to spell the word "dachshund" he simply wrote "hot dog!" The cartoon was a sensation and the term hot dog was born. Although historians generally credit him with the name, the supposed cartoon has never been found. –from Linda Stradley from whatscookingamerica.net

Years ago when I was feeding my family, I bought whitish hotdogs. I would never give
my family reddish hotdogs. I swore I could
taste dye in them. I cannot remember the
brand now, but if I would go a grocery store
I would go right to it.

Sausage doesn't look inedible, so the same would be said for un-colored hot dogs. It is probably just something done once and now we're used to it.

Hot dogs have always been a favorite and in my youth a special treat. My dad would let me tag along when he went to town and he sometimes stopped in a small grill and bought us a hot dog. I remember saving the paper and carrying it around just to smell the chili and onions.
