Wheatgrass Juice - Benefits & Recipes

The Benefits of Wheatgrass

The health benefits of wheatgrass juice are many, as frequent drinkers will attest. You may have seen enthusiasts "taking shots" of the stuff at your local juice bar or smoothie joint, or maybe your friend has a nice little crop growing beside the juicer in his or her kitchen. However the introduction was made, be glad it was. Take a gander at these facts:

  • Two ounces of wheatgrass juice contains the vitamins and minerals equivalent to 3 pounds of organic vegetables, and is especially high in magnesium, potassium, and calcium.
  • Wheatgrass juice is approximately 70% living chlorophyll, making it one of the best ingestible sources of chlorophyll available. Chlorophyll oxygenates the blood and organ tissue, impedes the growth of harmful bacteria in the digestive tract, neutralizes toxins and helps purify the liver.
  • Wheatgrass improves digestion and relieves constipation.
  • Wheatgrass rebuilds red blood cell count, naturally regulates blood pressure, and helps regulate blood sugar.
  • Wheatgrass juice acts as a safe agent for internal cleansing, possessing powers of detoxification more than ten times superior even to long-time detox favorites like carrot juice.
  • Wheatgrass helps heal infection, scarring, ulcers, and sores, on the skin, in the mouth, and internally.

Recipes For Wheatgrass

Of course, there's still the problem of taste. For some people, it's an acquired one. For others, they never quite learn to like it. Still others can barely choke it down. If one of these last two is you, never fear. Wheatgrass juice can be blended into other juices in such a way as to leave even the most skeptical of drinkers licking his or her lips. Of course, experimentation is key, as you'll have to discover for yourself what tickles your personal palate, but here are a few ideas to get you started.

For each of the juices, all you need is the fresh, whole fruit or vegetable indicated, your wheatgrass crop (measured in inch rounds), and your juicer. For smoothies, you will also need a blender or food processor. Wheatgrass can also be added to any of your favorite smoothie recipes.

It is a good juicer. It is heavy, but it is cast iron it is intended. I do not use it in my dorm that I grow Wheatgrass and it’s great. Make sure that you wash it right away that you do not get rusty, right?

Russell-D from Southern Ca. on November 15, 2009:

In Berlin last year, we stopped in at a Greek restaurant and for the first time tasted WHEAT BEER - on draft no less. The mellow, rich taste and the higher alcoholic content vs. our 3.5 stuff brought me back for a second night encore. That story is recalled in the "Poland with 3 days in Berlin" Chapter of my HUB Series "A La Carte"; Tales Of Food & Drink Digested from 55 Years of International Travel. David Russell

I've tried it and it's not that bad actually!

Heartwings on June 24, 2009:

I first tried a shot of wheatgrass juice from Jamba Juice about three years ago. I know it worked because within an hour I started getting a headache, and it was a good thing it was Friday afternoon. I was in bed the next day. But after that I felt tremendously better than I had in a long time.

So I tried a few more shots from the juice bar, then bought the containers of grass from Raley's supermarket after ordering a small, hand-crank auger type juicer just for grasses. I felt better and better, but thought it was expensive either way.

I invested in some seeds from, and it has been the best investment of my life! Super easy to grow yourself. I don't even mind the taste, but it's better "cut" with fresh orange juice or something else.

Thank you for giving detailed explanation of the benefits and the recipe too. I have tried the powder form and the ready made one, how does it taste? I mean the home made, the smell and flavor must be strong.

I might suggest my Mum try this out. She has auto-immune defficiency and part of the problem may be because of lack of oxygen in her system. Also, it just seems to be overall healthy.

Hi Maddie, my favorite wheat grass combination is mixed with the beet juice. For anyone who has never had the pleasure of drinking this juice it's like drinking a shot of energy. Great for Diabetics to use to get feeling better & improve their health.

Shane Wright on January 16, 2008:

i have seen wheat grass powder and pills do they work the same? Where do i buy fresh wheat grass? and is it okay not to juice it and just toss it in the blender with the other smoothie stuff? also how mush does fresh wheat grass cost?

raintree on January 05, 2008:

Hi Maddie, Thanks for this excellent information. We recently got a juicer so these recipes will be great :) I've had wheatgrass occasionally but looking forward to seeing what difference drinking regular wheatgrass juices will make.

Zsuzsy Bee from Ontario/Canada on January 03, 2008:

Thanks Maddie for the great information. I really wanted another opinion on the juice. I'm really having a hard time with the taste, I thought it would grow on me but it's still a shuddering experience for me. The only one I can get down is the one with carrots and oranges...It's helping with the blood pressure though and if you believe it or not for the first time in my life I'm actually able to grow my fingernails...Who would have guessed

Thanks again for the great HUB

regards Zsuzsy
