Vegan Onion Bhajis Recipe

What is it...

Depending on the region in India, you might find onion bhajis appertained to as a number of different names including onion pakora, kanda bhajia, kanda bhaji, and pyaz ke pakode to name a many. Away from onion, you can also find a variety of different bhajis like chili, chuck
and potato bhajis.

Ingredients - (Serves 2-3)

  • 3/4 cup flour, chickpea
  • 1/2 tsp baking pwder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric, ground
  • 2 Tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 medium green chili pepper, seeded then finely diced
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice
  • salt
  • 2 large sized white onions, cut to thin slices
  • vegetable oil, to fry with


  1. In a large mixing bowl, mix together the flour, cumin, baking powder, turmeric, green chili pepper, cilantro, lemon juice, and 6 Tbsp water. Season the mix with salt. Whisk the mix until it is thick and there are no lumps.
  2. Add in the onions and stir it to ensure the onions are completely coated.
  3. In a deep frying pan, heat the oil on medium heat. Test the oil by dropping a bit of batter into it. If the oil is hot enough, the batter will rise and bubble.
  4. Drop 1 Tbsp of batter into the oil and cook it for about 1 minute per side until it is gold. Do not overcrowd your pan. Cook 3-4 balls at a time. Repeat it until all of it is gone.
  5. Once they are cooked, put the bhajis on paper towels to drain off the excess oil.
  6. Serve them warm.
