Tridosha Nashak & Immunity Boosting Drink

This homemade beverage will not only balance the 3 doshas or biological energies known as Vata, Pitta and Kapha, which regulate all body functions but also help keep the immunity levels high thus preventing many health issues.

Ginger is Vata and Kapha dosha nashak/destroyer
Honey is Kapha dosha nashak/destroyer
Lemon is Pitta dosha nashak/destroyer

About Tridoshas

Well-balanced tridoshas are the foundation of perfect health as per Ayurveda. Below is a little information about the tridoshas and how to balance them.

Vata is the energy which transports things to different parts of the body and controls the movement of things in the body. Pitta is the energy controlling metabolism. Kapha is the energy which keeps all things bound together just as ligaments, cartilage & muscles are bound to bones, as one example. It aids in giving structure to the body.

A healthy body has all the 3 energies/doshas, that is, Vata, Pitta and Kapha correctly balanced. The doshas form the 3 basic pillars of Ayurvedic treatment.

These are called doshas or faults as any imbalance of any one or more of them or causes disease in the body.

Our body is made up of 5 elements - water, earth, air, fire and ether and these 5 are the constituents of these 3 energies as well. The 3 doshas control all our bodily functions.

Air & ether form Vata, water and earth form Kapha and fire and water, Pitta.

In childhood, Kapha is dominant imbalanced dosha as children mostly suffer from cough, cold, respiratory infections etc. Therefore all conditions in the body from the head to the chest, are due to Kapha imbalance.

In the young, the seven dhatus or tissues are being formed the dominant dosha is Pitta since youngsters suffer largely from acidity, gas, and other stomach related issues. Therefore all health issues from the chest to the stomach, are due to Pitta imbalance.

In old age, it is Vata which is predominantly imbalanced since the body organs become weaker and weaker and do not function at their optimum in old age the body starts losing its flexibility and the aged start suffering from all types of pain, body stiffness, etc.
Therefore health problems from the waist down to the legs are due to Vata imbalance.

Vata controls the respiration, blood movement & waste elimination while Pitta controls body metabolism like digesting the food, hunger, thirst and maintaining the body temperature. Since Kapha is a combination of a solid/earth and water it controls our body structure and growth.

The reasons why these 3 doshas become imbalanced are:
1. Eating meals at odd times makes Vata, Pitta and Kapha imbalanced.
2. Drinking water immediately after meals or just before, consuming large quantities of spices, sugar, salt, non-veg food also makes them imbalanced.
3. Irregular bowel movement is also one of the causes of this imbalance.

The imbalance of all three doshas can lead to over 150 diseases, Vata is responsible for about 80, Pitta about 50 and Kapha about 28 of them.

To correct the imbalance here are some things one can do:

According to the Maharishi Vaghbhata, the author of Ayurvedic texts like Ashtanga Sangreha and Astanga Hridaya, drinking water immediately after meals is akin to drinking poison.

Water should only be drunk about one and a half hours after a meal as it like dousing water on the fire ignited by the body to digest the food. This causes the food to be in incompletely digested and causing stomach health issues.

If very necessary you can drink 1 or 2 sips of water while you are having a meal. You can also have water a minimum of 40 minutes before a meal. If you follow the above, the digestive process will go on smoothly.

Also, drink 1-2 glasses of water as soon as you get up without brushing your teeth. The reason is that the collected saliva in your mouth has antibacterial properties and prevents many diseases once it is ingested.

Always take fruit juice at breakfast, lassi or chaach at lunch and milk after dinner.

Following the above will remove all your stomach related issues and also balance the 3 doshas.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 inch ginger, washed & peeled
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 tbsp honey, diabetics should skip adding honey

Instructions

  1. Add water in a saucepan. Wash & grate the ginger in it.
  2. Heat the water on high heat until it comes to a rolling boil then reduce heat to low and let simmer for 2 minutes.
  3. Take off the heat and strain out the liquid in a glass.
  4. Squeeze the lemon into this water and stir until it mixes well.
  5. Add the honey and mix again.
  6. Drink sip by sip. To be taken early morning on empty stomach. Can replace your morning cup of tea.
