Avocado has so many health benefits, it's easier to list what it doesn't cure. Nonetheless, I will try to do it justice.

  • Avocados provide 18 essential amino acids, carotenoids and beneficial fats that your body needs.
  • Avocados contain calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc; vitamins C, B6, B-12, A, D, K, E, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and potassium.
  • Avocados have lots of protein (4% per 100g), so if you're a vegetarian or a vegan, avocado is your best friend.
  • The most nutrient-rich part of an avocado is right under its skin, so make sure to get that goodness before you throw the skins away.
  • Avocado has thick skin that protects it from pesticides, so you don’t need to buy organic avocados. It is also one of the tastiest and easiest foods to eat since you don't need to cook it.
  • Mashed avocado with a teaspoon of lemon juice makes a great moisturizing mask. Leave on for 25 minutes and then rinse with warm water.
  • Health benefits: good digestion, healthy skin and hair, cardiovascular health, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects, kidney, liver and bone health, anti-aging effects, and lots of energy to fuel the body.

Thank you thank you :-) I love all these foods too, and all of them (with the exception of goji berries, perhaps) are fairly "ordinary" foods, but they are actually anything but ordinary! When I started researching the best healthiest and tastiest foods on earth, this is the list I came up with, and they're all familiar and easily accessible.

I guess what I'm saying is, you don't have to eat something weird, tasteless or outright gross-tasting (for me it's tofu and all soy products) to eat healthy and to have the energy to enjoy your life!

Thank you Phyllis! I first heard of goji berries when I took a Qi Gong workshop back in 2011 ( The instructors swore by it, and highly recommended using them in smoothies, they add wonderful sweetness to them, not to mention a huge amount of vitamins and nutrients. And you can also eat them as a snack, there's hardly a healthier one around. And how cool is it that goji berries originated in Tibet? There's something so profoundly spiritual about that place.

And the watermelon...LOL, who knew that it was going to stir up so much controversy? Not so simple, not so simple at all...

I have also never heard of watermelon being referred to as a vegetable, so I did some research and find that this has been an ongoing debate for centuries as to whether it is a fruit or vegetable. I didn't exactly grew up a health nut - for the first 20 years of my life my diet was pretty much meat and potatoes (and sweets), so it took me a while to realize the value of fresh clean (organic) fruits and vegetables, there's just nothing like it! Then I found out that some of them are actually healthier than others, and could be considered "super foods".

As for the watermelon, it was a surprise for me too to learn that it's cucumber's cousin, although some people consider it both a fruit and a vegetable, like a tomato.

Great article! This is a great list of healthy foods. I have to agree with Joshua, I had no idea that the watermelon was part of the vegetable family. However, in a way I find it interesting that it is part of the cucumber family. I have always said that sometimes when you bite into the white part near the skin of the watermelon, it does taste a little like cucumber oddly enough, and now I know why. Thank you for sharing.
