Rum is one of many alcoholic drinks available and like all alcoholic drinks, rum is seen in many cases as a cause of the many ills in society. We hear about drunk drivers causing the deaths of thousands. Alcoholism is a growing problem leading to deaths, broken families and relationships and illnesses. Understanding that alcohol can be potent and drinking in moderation is the first step to a healthy relationship with the alcohol beverage called rum.
Rum is made through a fermentation process in many factories around the world from sugar cane juce or a by product of sugar cane called molasses. Yeast and water added to the molasses or cane juice begins the fermentation process. If you visited any Caribbean countries you probably took a tour of a rum distillery and sampled the various types of rum produced by the factory.The Caribbean and Latin America are among the largest rum producing countries in the world.
In 1904, the concept of "healthy drinking" began to take roots. An article in the 1904 Journal of the American Medical Association stated that alcohol could prevent heart disease. Several studies have been done over the years. A Danish study also found that a person's chance of dying from heart disease, decreased by 50 percent with moderate drinking and exercise.
When rum is taken in moderation, not only would you enjoy the experience much more than if you drank an excessive amount but you would reap the extensive health benefits associated with rum. According to David J Hansen PHD, several studies tracking participants for several years found that moderate drinkers had a 38% lower risk of kidney cancer than those who didn't drink at all.The risk dropped to 66 % for women over 60 years. Studies also show benefits in the prevention of non Hodgkin lymphoma and thyroid cancer.
Longevity is often cited as a benefit to drinking rum or other alcohol beverages in moderation. A lower risk of coronary disease is part of the equation. Studies point to a lower incidence of coronary disease among drinkers than among non drinkers. Anxiety reduction and a reduced risk factor for Alzheimer and Dementia have all been cited as benefits you can enjoy in a glass of alcoholic drinks, including rum.
The health benefits of drinking rum is, however, fraught with controversies because of the medical and social consequences of excessive alcohol use. There are also medical studies that suggest that alcohol can be harmful rather than helpful in certain types of cancers; one of which is breast cancer. It is important, therefore to understand that moderation is the key in order to see any health benefits from even so called healthy foods.
The recommended alcohol intake is 1.5 ounce. A standard alcohol drink is as follows:
Wine 5 ounce glass
Beer - 12 ounce bottle or can
Shot of rum 1.5 ounce
It is also recommended by some medical groups that if you never drank, there is no need to start now. However, one can't deny the numerous studies that suggest a glass of rum in moderation can help the drinker live longer than the abstainer.

I date my bottles of rum with a permanent marker and have shown my sons the dates of the bottles I replace. Most frequent was 14 month old least frequent was about 5 years. My current bottle was purchased in 2014.

Because of medicines I take I cannot drink but I do love rum flavor and I bake a cake with it once a year and now and then in a juice glass of eggnog I put about a tablespoon so that I barely taste it but not enough to hurt me. Great to know it is good for us.

yes..as mentioned in the hub, drinking rum in moderation is good for health, but what happens most of the time is that people start with moderate drinking and ends up with excessive drinking habits, creating health issues in the long run..

This is an interesting alternative from the norm. Who knew that there are some health benefits to rum? I agree with everyone. A lot of people over consume alcohol. Moderation is the key, indeed.
