The Cost of Making Egg Rolls or Spring Rolls

  • Author:
  • Updated date:

Whether you make egg rolls or spring rolls the cost is about the same. The cost will vary depending on the meats and vegetables that you use. I have calculated the cost of a recipe for Chicken Spring Rolls. The chicken and the wrappers account for 60% of the cost. But it is still roughly half the price compared to buying them premade in the frozen food section of your grocery store. Also, the store bought products are roughly the same price whether they are all vegetables or have meat in them.

I find that it is not much more work to make 20 or 30 rolls compared to 10. So I make a large batch and freeze what I don’t use. I then have them on hand to cook straight from the freezer. See the end of this article for freezing instructions.

I've included the cost of my ingredients at the bottom of the article so you can compare to prices in your area.

To Freeze Rolls

Egg rolls do freeze easier than spring rolls because the wrapper is thicker so you have less chance of them becoming soggy. But either can be frozen. You can freeze raw, partially cooked or fully cooked. I like to partially cook before freezing so that they don’t get soggy and you don’t overcook them when you reheat them. To freeze, place on a lightly greased baking sheet and freeze. Then wrap individually in aluminum foil, put in a freezer bag and return to the freezer. You can also just wrap and freeze, eliminating the baking sheet step. Uncooked rolls should always be thawed before cooking. Partially cooked of fully cooked rolls do not need to be thawed. You can either cook them in the oven or fry them.
