Information About Peanut Sauce

Peanut sauce, satay sauce, bumbu kacang, sambal kacang, or pecel is an Indonesian sauce made from ground roasted or fried peanuts, widely used in Indonesian cuisine and many other dish throughout the world.

In Thailand, satay sauce is known as Sate Kai and it's made from dry roasted peanuts. It is usually served with a chicken marinated in coconut milk, turmeric, cumin, onions, coriander, and light soy sauce. It's often served with jasmine or coconut rice.

Satay sauce is a slightly spicy peanut sauce. While it's popularly associated with Thai cuisine, it's enjoyed throughout Southeast Asia and has Indonesian roots. It's best known as the sauce for satay, a tasty appetizer of marinated meat (often chicken, pork, or beef) grilled on a skewer.

It's salty, sweet, acidic and bold — a sauce like no other. For the uninitiated, Asian peanut sauce is a puree of peanuts, soy sauce, ginger, sesame, spices and often garlic, lemongrass and lime.

Peanut sauce is actually of Malaysian or Indonesian origin. Very few dishes served in Thailand actually use peanut sauce but it has become a very popular part of American-Thai food.

While most peanut sauces do contain nutrient-packed ingredients, they're also high in calories and fat, making them healthy choices -- but only in moderation. There are certainly more nutritious and lower-calorie alternatives to peanut sauce, but if you stick to small servings, the sauce won't harm any diet plans.

What Americans know as peanut sauce is more commonly referred to as satay sauce (or bumbu kacang) in Indonesia, because it's most often served with the popular Indonesian dish, satay (skewered, grilled meats).

Thai Peanut Sauce is traditionally used for a mouthwatering satay on the grill, made from skewered chicken. Our Thai Peanut Sauce is much more than a marinade — mix it into a stir fry for delectable sauteed vegetables or pork.

It is unknown when peanuts became a part of the Thai food system, but it is believed that foreigners brought peanuts into Thailand about 400 years ago.

Nuts. Almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, pistachios and walnuts contain high amounts of fiber, calcium, magnesium, zinc, Vitamin E and Omega-3 fats which all have anti-inflammatory effects.

The peanut sauce will keep in the fridge for up to 1 week. It can be reheated in the microwave or over low heat on the stove top.

Peanut sauce is the classic dipping sauce for chicken satay (grilled chicken skewers) and makes a delicious dipping sauce for rice paper rolls, shrimp, potstickers, tempura and fresh vegetables including cucumber slices, carrot sticks and red pepper strips.
