Sugar: More Than For Eating and Drinking

Most people know sugar is good for baking cakes and sweetening coffee and tea. However, there are some interesting and amazing uses for sugar that do not involve eating or drinking.

Sugar can be used in many different ways. Read through the uses below and see how many of them you would like to try to enhance your life.

In the Kitchen

  1. Keep your bread, cakes, and cookies fresh by putting sugar cubes in an airtight container with them.
  2. Stop cheese from molding by putting a few sugar cubes in an airtight container.
  3. Clean your coffee grinder and spice grinder. Pour 1/4 cup of sugar into them and let the appliances run for a few minutes.
  4. Eliminate cooking odors from your kitchen by boiling some sugar and water in a pan. Add 1 tablespoon of vinegar to get rid of strong odors left behind after cooking food with a strong smell such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and fish. The combination becomes a natural air freshener.

Around the House

  • Everyone wants to keep their flowers looking good as long as possible. Add sugar to the water to keep the stems fresh. Add vinegar to prevent bacteria from growing. Replace the water every other day.
  • To ignite a fire in a fireplace and to keep it from going out, throw a handful of sugar on it.

For Your Health

  • It is not unusual for people to burn their tongues from drinking hot beverages and eating spicy foods. For instant relief from pain, simply suck on a sugar cube.
  • Give sugar to children just before immunizations. It will help eliminate the pain. You will know it is working when they don't cry as much.
  • Cure hiccups by eating a spoonful of sugar.
  • Sugar will help sores and ulcers heal quicker because it will eliminate the bacteria.
  • To help cuts and wounds heal quicker, sprinkle sugar before bandaging.
  • For bee stings and bug bites, add equal parts sugar and water. Then apply to the affected area with a cotton ball.

Beauty Tips

  • Sugar is a very good ingredient to exfoliate your skin. Mix sugar with olive oil or coconut oil and apply gently to help get rid of dead skin cells on elbows, knees, and feet.
  • Extend lipstick by sprinkling a bit of sugar on top of your lipstick after you have applied it. Let it sit for a few seconds, then lick it off. The sugar will extend the application.
  • Suck on a teaspoon of sugar for bad breath.
  • To clean your hands and get rid of odors, add a little sugar to your soap to make an abrasive hand cleaner.

For Bugs, Roaches and Other Pests

  • Bugs and roaches can be eliminated easily with sugar. Combine about 2 tablespoons of sugar and 2 tablespoons of baking powder in a bowl and sprinkle the mixture over the places where you usually see bugs and roaches.
  • You can make your own traps for flies and wasps with sugar. Mix two parts sugar with one part water and boil. After the mixture cools, pour the syrup into a large bowl or jar and put it on the porch or windowsill. Because the mixture is sticky, it will trap flies, wasps, and bugs.

For Cleaning

  • Grass stains can easily be removed with sugar. Combine sugar and warm water. Apply the paste on the grass stain and leave it there for about an hour. The grass stains will come out when you wash the garment.
  • Remove dirt, grease, grime, and odor from your hands by combining a little olive oil and sugar. Rub your hands together to get your hands clean and eliminate the odor that comes from fish, onions and other smelly things.
