Quiche Lorraine or Simply Called Swiss and Bacon Quiche
Quiche (pronounced keesh) consists of an open pie crust that has a variety of ingredients such as cheese, vegetables, meat or seafood in a custard type filling.
This recipe for Quiche Lorraine, or sometimes referred to as simply Swiss and Bacon Quiche, makes an excellent hors d'oeuvre or main dish.
The ease in making this quiche comes from the use of refrigerated crescent roll dough for the crust. Most quiche recipes require you to make a pie crust and then bake it first without the filling. In this recipe, you can quickly press the crescent roll triangles into the pie plate and add the filling ingredients without any need to bake the crust ahead. This isn't the way your grandmother used to make a pie crust, but it tastes great and is so, so EASY!
Another plus for this recipe is the use of only one egg. Most ingredient lists for quiche call for multiple eggs. This is the perfect dish for anyone that needs to watch their intake of eggs for health reasons.
It may be cut into small pie shaped wedges and served at room temperature as an appetizer. My family prefers to eat it hot as a main dish accompanied by a tossed salad and sliced fruit. Since it is made with a crust, there is no need to serve bread with it. We have found that serving it with a side dish of cranberry sauce is a good taste combination.
- 1 package Crescent rolls refrigerated dough
- 1 cup evaporated milk
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 28oz. can fried onion rings
- 6 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
- 1 1/2 cups Swiss cheese, finely shreded
- Preheat over to 325 degrees.
- Spray 9 inch pie plate with cooking oil spray. Press Crescent roll triangles into pie plate bottom and up the sides. Make sure seams of dough are pressed together well.
- Using a wire whisk, whip together evaporated milk, beaten egg, Worcestershire sauce and salt. Stir in the shredded cheese.
- Spread 1/2 can of onion rings and half of the crumbled bacon in the bottom of the pie crust.
- Pour cheese mixture into pie pan on top of the onion rings and bacon.
- Top with remaining onion rings and bacon.
- Bake 30 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to set for 10 minutes before cutting.
Real Men Would Like This Quiche
Real Men Don't Eat Quiche was a best-selling book in 1982 by author Bruce Feirstein. It outlined many things that masculine men simply don't do, one of which was eating quiche. I'm sure after tasting this dish, any man would enjoy eating it and they may even consider making it for themselves. Yes, times have changed since 1982!
