The pineapple is a fantastic tropical fruit that is exceptionally juicy and has a distinctly tropical flavor. Pineapple is more than a delectable tropical fruit; it also has a range of significant health benefits and has been used in traditional folk medicine for many years. The English term pineapple (or pina in Spanish) refers to the fruit’s resemblance to a pinecone.

Pineapple (Ananus comosus, Bromeliaceae) is a 90- to 100-cm-tall herbaceous perennial with rosette-like spreading leaves. Individual berries form the fruit, which grows in clusters around a central core, with each pineapple scale representing a single flower or berry. It originated in the Americas and is grown throughout the world in tropical climates.

Pineapple – a nutritional powerhouse

Sweet but low in calories, pineapples are rich in vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and antioxidants.


· Vitamin C - Pineapple is notably high in vitamin C, an anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting antioxidant. The U.S. Department of Agriculture calculates that one cup of pineapple has 78.9 milligrams (mg) of vitamin C. That is greater than the recommended daily intake of 75 mg for adult women and close to 90 mg for males.

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is required to grow and repair all bodily tissues. It contributes to various body functions, including collagen synthesis, iron absorption, wound healing, and cartilage, bone, and tooth preservation. As a powerful immune system booster, it is a vitamin everyone should have amply nowadays.

· Vitamin B1 and B6. In addition to Vitamin C, pineapples have vitamins B1 (thiamine) and B6 (pyridoxine), which, together with B12 (cobalamin), are necessary for the neurological system’s correct functioning.

· Minerals - Pineapple juice contains large amounts of calcium, potassium, and manganese.

  • Potassium - is used by your body for many processes. Since the human body can’t produce potassium, it has to come from foods like pineapple.

Bromelain - is a complex mixture of substances present in the pineapple plant’s fruit and stem. Among the many components are a group of protein-digesting enzymes called cysteine proteinases. Pineapples are members of the bromeliad family, thus the scientific name - Ananus Comosus, Bromeliaceae. Pineapples are the only bromeliad that produces edible fruit.

Bromelain cancer benefits - According to the American Cancer Society, pineapple has a high concentration of bromelain, which may aid in digestion and the treatment of osteoarthritis. Cancer is frequently connected with chronic inflammation, and bromelain and other proteolytic enzymes have improved the lifespan of animals with different malignancies.

According to research done in 2010, bromelain may be useful in the fight against cancer by impacting cancer cell growth and controlling the key pathways supporting malignancy.

  • Pineapple’s substantial vitamin C and antioxidant content may also help lower the incidence of age-related macular degeneration, which damages the eyes.

Natural fresh pineapple is best

Pineapples are a good way of getting some essential vitamins and minerals and bromelain, and dietary fiber. However, canned pineapple has fewer of these benefits. The canned variety is also higher in calories and sugar. If you will purchase the canned variety, choose the one with no added sugar or syrup.
