Vegetable Juice Comparison: Mott's Garden Blend vs Campbell's Original V8

Introduction and EXPECTATIONS

I have enjoyed vegetable juice for as long as I can remember. The choices were usually very limited. It was V8 or off brand vegetable juice and a few brands of tomato juice which seemed fairly similar and that was about all. There didn't seem to be much difference in taste or color.

As with many other products, today there are many choices and it takes some thought to choose something even as insignificant as vegetable juice. Get out the cell phone and call your other half....UHHH, what should I get? (How did people make choices before cell phones?)

My expectation before doing this comparison was fairly simple. I really did not expect much difference between the two products. I thought vegetable juice is vegetable juice. I thought fruit juice is usually sweet and vegetable juice is always salty. I looked at the label and saw that both had nearly the same sodium level and both were tomato based, so, based on my prior experience with V8, I was expecting two glasses of a somewhat thick, salty liquid. As similar as they are, there are also significant differences.


I sampled equal amounts (about 1/2 cup) of each juice.

I first sampled the V8. The juice was indeed thick and the color was reddish with hints of brown and rust colors. The taste was exactly like I expected. It was a tomato flavor and was indeed salty.

The Mott's Garden Blend, however, surprised me. The color was bright red and the juice was not as thick as I was expecting. The taste got my attention as well. My first impression was that it had a more tangy flavor than a salty one. It starts off with a tomato flavor, but a tanginess soon takes over. Next, I experienced a spicy sensation I certainly was not expecting. It reminded me of drinking Bloody Mary Mix without the vodka. It certainly does not seem to have a traditional vegetable juice flavor.


Sodium: Motts Garden Blend has 410 mg/serving

V8 has 420 mg/serving. Almost no difference.

Calories: Motts Garden Blend has 45 calories/serving.

V8 has 50 calories per serving. Again, almost no difference.

Vitamins: V8 is the winner in this category.

Both have small amounts of Iron and Calcium but V8 still has slightly more. Both have 2 servings of vegetable per 8 oz serving of juice.

Both products cost exactly the same at the WalMart Supercenter on July 20, 2011.

Looking at the ingredient list, it is easy to see how there can be such a difference in taste. The ingredients for Mott's Garden Blend are rather "lively" or spicy and the ingredients in V8 juice are mostly mellow. Both start out with water and tomato as the base, hence the reddish color in both. Both also contain celery, carrot and parsley juice, but the Garden Blend contains pepper juice, onion juice, onion and garlic powder. V8 does not have these, but it has the juice of beets, lettuce and spinach which would tame the taste.


Just because two products look similar and claim to both be vegetable juice, it does not mean that they will taste the same. Mott's Garden Blend certainly surprised me with it's tangy spiciness and V8 juice delivered the consistently good quality, flavorful yet mellow juice blend I have come to expect. I would purchase both products again.

Another reason for clearance: perhaps the size of the container is about to change.

Thank you for your feedback, Bob. While I'm not sure about the actual reason for the juice being on clearance, I would check the freshness or use by date. Where I shop, products are sometimes placed on clearance as the dates get close. Buyer beware.

Anyway, always liked V8 but the low sodium version is so bland I had a hard time sticking with it. The Mott's GB low sodium (all I have had) seems to win easily with my taste buds.

Seems the parsley was a stronger finish in the Motts, which I like.

I tried my first drink of Mott's Vegetable Juice this weekend and I hated it. I love low sodium V8 Juice and I will stay with it. Mott's has a horrible taste with the vinegar and pepper juice. I will never buy another bottle. Save your money and stay with V8 Juice.

I switched to Motts low sodium from V8 low sodium. I prefer the taste, but I could not find out if it had the same veggie content as V8. It seems more watery, but maybe that doesn't matter. Interesting article though. Thanks

I have been hooked on V8 for many years. I used a coupon to try my first purchase of Motts Veggie Garden, and I too was blown away by the taste. I don't care what is in it as long as it isn't toxic. I have not purchased V8 in the last 6 months, and probably never will again.

I agree with rosie red...I absolutely LOVE the taste of Mott's Garden Blend...and I'm not a huge fan of V8. I think if there was anything "poisonous" in it, it definitely would not be on the shelf, and for those of us who don't own a juicer, I think it's a fantastic option. I know that healthy is better, but healthy AND tasty? There's just no comparison...Mott's wins every time for me! :)

I love the taste of Motts Garden Blend!! I've always been 'loyal' to V8, but WOW! when I tried the Motts, I was blown away! I guess it is a matter of taste buds! I will continue to drink both, as I think they are both wonderful!

The taste of vinegar in the Motts Garden Blend is overpowering. I will not buy it again, and I am discarding the unused portion.

Soy lecithin ingredient means it is a GMO product as is V8 due to the beet juice. Beets are now GMO in the U.S.

It is unfortunate that consumers can no longer purchase products WITHOUT gmo soy lecithin or a vegetable juice that is non-gmo as well. Do the research and read Jeffrey M. Smith's book Genetic Roulette. yikes

Not only is this an informative hub about vegetable juice, but it also touches on a problem most people, since the advent of the cell, have faced more and more: making decisions on their own.

The format and analysis Tom makes gives an example as to how we can approach a decision. We should stop relying on what others' think and just look at the facts. Maybe, this way we will have more leaders and less sheep.

Mott's Garden Blend Vegetable Juice.

The ingredients are water, tomato paste, pepper juice, celery, vinegar, carrot juice concentrate, sea salt, onion juice, salt, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), dill juice, carrot juice, natural flavors, onion and garlic powder, soy lecithin.

No I won't be drinking vinegar (what kind of vinegar, if it's grain vinegar, then IMHO=poison) garlic "powder" (yuck) though we eat plenty of onions and garlic in my household, pepper juice (no thanks unless exact pepper used is stated) "natural flavors" (if it's so natural then why are they afraid to list these natural flavors?) Soy lecithin is a surprise, why do they need that in there? (cheap ingredients made to appear thicker?) Also, we try to avoid soy as too toxic for the thyroid gland. (look it up) I guess we stick to our juicer and homemade vegetable juice as we gave up V8 and Trader Joe's brand too a few years back when we all decided to get super healthy (I was looking for a quick fix) (sigh)

Nice review...thanks for your hard work, but still looking for the *complete* list of ingredients in Mott's Garden Blend. I don't want to spend time in the store reading the micro-print gov required ingredient list with a magnifying glass, which will be under politically-correct fluorescent lights..(meaning not conducive to reading) LOL :-)) thanks again
