I love Mareg Botat recipe. It is the first Kuwaiti food that I learnt how to cook and I love eating this food. It is tangy and delicious.

Mareg Bamia is one of my Kuwaiti food favourites which I learnt how to cook during my time of work in the country of Kuwait. It is one recipe that is common among Arab household in the Middle East especially Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and even Egypt. Mareg Bamia is so easy to prepare and cook.

Bamia is the Arabic word for Okra. As you know Okra is also called Ladies Fingers as it resembles the shape of ladies fingers. Long and tapering shape. Okra is sold in supermarkets but mostly sold in Oriental shops here in England. In my country(Philippines), okra is widely used as an ingredient to a special recipe called "pinakbet".

Not many people eat Okra because of it's slimy juice but the health benefits of eating Okra are great for people with Cancer, Diabetes and other illnesses. Okra tastes very bland, it only taste better when accompanied by meat especially lamb's meat.

I read somewhere that Cleopatra of Egypt loved to eat Okra because it contains Vitamin A promoting great skin and reducing pimples. No wonder Cleopatra was portrayed with such beauty.

Mareg Bamia Recipe(Lamb and Okra Stew)

Ingredients for Mareg Bamia Recipe(Lamb and Okra Stew)

  • 1 kilo Lamb, With bones or without bones
  • one bulb onion, chopped
  • 5 cloves garlic, diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin, powder
  • 1/2teaspoon coriander, powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon or more salt, to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon blackpepper, powder
  • 4 or 5 pieces tomatoes, fresh or tinned/cut into 4 pieces
  • 500gms fresh Okra, topped and tailed
  • 2 tablespoon cooking oil
  • 8 to 10 cups water, as required
  • 1 can or half a tube paste tomato puree, tinned or in a tube

Mareg Bamia Recipe(lamb and okra stew recipe) - a Kuwaiti Recipe

  1. First wash the lamb and set aside. Top and tail the Okra( just cut off the head and tail of the okra), wash and set aside. Cut the onions, smash the garlic, slice tomatoes and set aside.
  2. Start by using a large pot on the cooker, add the cooking oil or butter, add the lamb pieces and stir until brown then add the garlic and onions, continue to stir till the onions are also brown a little and soft.
  3. Add the tomatoes and carry on stirring until tomatoes are soft, add water to cover the ingredients.Add more water as required.
  4. When it boils for about half an hour, add the spices like cumin, coriander, salt and black pepper and tomato puree and stir. Sometimes you can add these spices in the beginning but I do prefer it this way.
  5. Once meat is tender, add the Okra or bamia and carry on cooking until the Okra is tender and cooked. Always add the Okra at the last few minutes because Okra does not take long to cook.
  6. When the water is lessened or has thickened and the meat and Okra is tender, this means it is cooked and ready to serve. It is better if the meat is coming off the bones of the lamb.
  7. This meat and okra recipe can be eaten with plain cooked rice. It is delicious when eaten as soon as it is cooked. Enjoy!

Health benefits of Okra or Ladies fingers

I just want to add that for this recipe, you can also use different meat like beef and chicken. For me, lamb is the best meat for this recipe but you could be adventurous and try using other meats. Other people use frozen Okra and tinned tomatoes but I believe fresh Okra and fresh tomatoes are better. The flavor is much better with fresh ingredients.

Okra has lots of good health benefits. Okra is recommended for people who are suffering from Cancer and Diabetes due to it's anti-oxidants content such as beta-carotene, xanthine, and lutein.

My stepmother is using Okra to help with her diabetes. She cuts the tapering end of the okra and put few okra in a glass with a half-water content. Then leaves it overnight and drinks the water in the morning. This seems to help control her diabetes. Another thing to do is include okra in your cooking recipe more.

Okra is high in Vitamin C which functions as anti-oxidant and neutralizes free radicals. These free radicals are responsible for some types of cancers. Okra provides protein, Riboflavin,phosphorous, potassium, dietary fiber, Vitamin A, C, K and Vitamin B 6.

Linda - this looks absolutely delicious, especially as we are well into winter here. Always nice to have something so warming and not too difficult to make. I'm not familiar with Okra although I'm sure it's on the veggie shelf here, so I'll give this a go soon.
